This is the same genius FO that brought in the likes of Nick Van Exel, Steve Smith, Terry Porter, Glenn Robinson, Melvin Ely, Jerome Kersey and Charlie Ward. With the exception of Ely, who never got a chance here, the rest were too gassed at the end of their careers to make an impact on a championship roster.

Now recall the FO's past infatuations with the likes of Chris Webber, Lamond Murray, Matt Carroll, Joel Pryzbilla, Gary Payton, Karl Malone and Jason Kidd among others. Many forget that while the Spurs were busy "raising their skirts" for Jason Kidd, they purposely overlooked Josh Howard in the draft weeks earlier that summer. Also if Kidd had elected to sign here, his max contract (same money as Duncan) would have single-handedly ruined their carefully constructed financial cap picture for years to come, not to mention probably costing them Parker and Ginobili or both in a sure S&T scenario.

The Spurs have notoriously and anuually played with their own personal keg of dynamite. Pinning their fortunes on a strategy based around acquiring aging veterans, who've reached the end of their careers and who'll sign on the cheap. Furthermore, banking on the sustained good health of those older veterans.

It's also been obvious for years that the Spurs virtually ignore domestic talent in favor of intenrational talent. This not a flawed strategy in as much it is an unbalanced one. There's no doubt the Spurs have a marvelous core (Duncan, Parker, Ginobili, Bowen). However, Duncan and Bowen are not going to play forever. R.C seems to pride himself for having the oldest team in the league - every year.

At some point, the Spurs MUST invest time, effort and yes some money in the next nucleus of this team. With at least a 1-year incubation period required for a young player to learn the system, how can any young player ever develop if he's not given time and opportunity?
