Won't average a combined 5 pts and 2 rpg for their career. People get so excited or the next big thing and they don't realize what they have. The only positive Butler had was age and that goes away fast, the rest of him fucking sucked. Scola I don't believe really exists and is the figment of someones imagination.
The horrible front office drafted Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, the same front office that has won 4 rings now. Everyone bitched and moaned when we traded Malik Rose and hes gone on to do pretty much crap and fuck all. So what if our best free agent pickup was Bruce Bowen in 2001 or that their best trade was getting rid of their worst free agent signing Rasho.
4 titles bitches, I think they know what they are doing (even if they are doing it cheaply).

Dusty Garza could have figured out to select Tim Duncan. A couple of interns told RC to take Parker and Ginobili. They passed on Josh Howard for the right to sign Nesterovic. They dealt Rose and David Lee and another useful pick for a year's rental of Nazr Mohammed. :jack
Why isn't RC in Seattle instead of Presti?

Name me one player now on the Spurs roster with a low-post game...outside of Duncan
I'll go even further....name me one player the Spurs even hold the rights to that could POTENTIALLY be a Spur some time down the road that has some semblence of a low-post game.
Here's the thing....YOU CAN'T!
Either Butler or Scola filled a need for this team, and now both are Spurs no more.
You better hope that Matt Bonner starts working on some low-post moves....

It doesn't matter what they end up doing.
The point is they have a trade value much higher than what the Spurs got. They handed a division rival a zero-risk move.

Here's another thing....
WE COULDN'T EVEN GET ONE OF THEIR 80 PGs and WE STILL HAVE BENO!

Yeah, we could have at least forced them to take Beno.

John Lucas III making less than a mil I think....
But yeah, I get your point.

Don't give me that shit! Don't act like every move these fuckers make is the right one. For all the FO's well-documented success, perhaps it's easy to ignore their failures. Lest you forget some of acquisitions and even proposed flirtations they've had in the past. Allow me to refresh your memory.
This is the same genius FO that brought in the likes of Nick Van Exel, Steve Smith, Terry Porter, Glenn Robinson, Melvin Ely, Jerome Kersey and Charlie Ward. With the exception of Ely, who never got a chance here, the rest were too gassed at the end of their careers to make an impact on a championship roster.
Now recall the FO's past infatuations with the likes of Chris Webber, Lamond Murray, Matt Carroll, Joel Pryzbilla, Gary Payton, Karl Malone and Jason Kidd among others. Many forget that while the Spurs were busy "raising their skirts" for Jason Kidd, they purposely overlooked Josh Howard in the draft weeks earlier that summer. Also if Kidd had elected to sign here, his max contract (same money as Duncan) would have single-handedly ruined their carefully constructed financial cap picture for years to come, not to mention probably costing them Parker and Ginobili or both in a sure S&T scenario.
The Spurs have notoriously and anuually played with their own personal keg of dynamite. Pinning their fortunes on a strategy based around acquiring aging veterans, who've reached the end of their careers and who'll sign on the cheap. Furthermore, banking on the sustained good health of those older veterans.
It's also been obvious for years that the Spurs virtually ignore domestic talent in favor of intenrational talent. This not a flawed strategy in as much it is an unbalanced one. There's no doubt the Spurs have a marvelous core (Duncan, Parker, Ginobili, Bowen). However, Duncan and Bowen are not going to play forever. R.C seems to pride himself for having the oldest team in the league - every year.
At some point, the Spurs MUST invest time, effort and yes some money in the next nucleus of this team. With at least a 1-year incubation period required for a young player to learn the system, how can any young player ever develop if he's not given time and opportunity?
This team had only a few assets to start with. The decisions to rid the roster of Scola and Butler were an example of a FO who clearly didn't value the limited assets that it owned.
Championship rings be dammed - that doesn't mean the FO should take the irresponsible approach of giving away assets and ignoring opportunities to improve the roster just to save a few mil. Perhaps this is one reason why they've not repeated.

Scola can step in and play today. For 3 years, $10 mil. :wtf

I will give the front office props for drafting Tim Duncan. Shrewd move, that one.

I'm with Iceman to a point... I think you guys greatly overrate Scola and I would be surprised if Jackie Butler is still in the league in three years.
However, I would have hoped we could get more for them. A lot more, frankly. But hopefully there's more to it.

It's probably too late for a next nucleus. Their young talent is either way too raw and slight of talent or really way to raw and really slight of talent. They've decided to fish with what they have and threw what bait they had to cut over the side.
This team had only a few assets to start with. The decisions to rid the roster of Scola and Butler were an example of a FO who clearly didn't value the limited assets that it owned.
That's the astonishing thing. One thinks they'll wake up to their 'assets' till being empty with surprise. They had exactly two tradeable assets - Butler and Scola - and in one scoop, traded them together for absolutely nothing.
This is a team without a vision of the future and too much ego to realize it.

All those shity moves have really hurt us these past 10 years.
I think the NFL just became my favorite sport. Unless we pull a another deal that's the exact opposite of this one. And the only deal I can think of is if Presti deals us Durant for Beno.

Or unless we win another title and you cheer up like a 10 year old and start praising the FO.
The Spurs FO has been more lucky than smart during this run. Eventually the core is going to get too old and we'll get owned by younger and quicker teams.
What bothers me most about this move is we dumped players with decent upside (Scola for sure) just to get under salcap. And we dealt them to a division and conference rival. I wouldn't have given a fuck if we dealt them to the Cavs or some other worthless east team.
Spurs have a great shot at repeating especially if they play the exact same roster. The fact that they were able to win the championship playing a roster that deep is impressive. I bet they can do it again. But any Spurs championship, past, present, or future begins and ends with Tim Duncan. The Spurs FO can kiss my ass. For every good move they make, they make 10 bad ones.

This is still the same worthless bitching i expect from a teenage girl who just got dumped, stop being irrational. You can't stay the best forever, to think so is stupidity.
Of course they've been "lucky", every good team has gotten lucky. The bulls were lucky they got jordan, the lakers were lucky they got kobe...in the end youre just bitching, and it's ridiculous. They're the most praised FO in the league, and we're considered a model franchise by most teams in the NBA. You have no basis for your arguments other than a trade for [Butler and Scola.] Let it go.
You can't stay the best forever, to think so is stupidity.
No shit.
Some more titles while Duncan is in his prime would be cool though.
I'm very optimistic about the Spurs winning games if Duncan gets hurt and we have to start Robert Horry's geriatric ass in his place.
We just traded a Playstation 3 for a pack of Pall Mall cigarettes. Couldn't even get Dorals.
No shit.

I think the word your looking for is pessimistic.
And i just get tired of everyone jumping ship after such small things and complaining about the FO. The spurs wouldnt win many games with duncan out, regardless of who his replacement was.
Let things play out.

Some get it, some still dont. The thought of what we could have got is what kills me. If we didnt have a cheap ass owner we probably could have got Nocioni in a s and t, thats how desperate Bulls are for low post scoring - and we just fling two big guys who can score off for nothing.
