View Full Version : Summer League Game 6: Spurs vs. Sixers

The Spurs move their summer league action to Utah and will play five games in the Rocky Mountain Revue. The game today against the Sixers started 15 minutes ago but I can't find anywhere online to watch it. I assume that there is no webcast option.

However, it appears that 12 of the 16 games played at RMR will be shown tape delayed at some point on NBATV.

I guess we'll have to wait. And really, without Butler on this team, it's going to get ugly. Probably best if Spurs fans do not watch :)

Yep looks like it will be tape-delayed only. Lucky Jazz get local coverage.

Damn...it seems like only yesterday it was the golden age.

Considering White is probably not long for the Spurs, I hope Marcus Williams steps up.

I wonder if Sanikidze was getting buried because the Spurs didn't want anyone asking for him to take Butler's contract.

THe Spurs need to realize that the goal of European teams is not to prepare their second round picks for the NBA...but to have these guys there for a few years and actually benefit from their own development efforts.

To me it makes perfect sense that the Euro teams would try to develop them the first year and then get a years worth of benefit out of them, at the least...that's why they get hidden the first year.

Exactly what is their incentive to devote a year to developing these guys and then lose them to the NBA?

Damn...no wonder Euros think Americans are arrogant.

Roberson has scored a lot in Vegas with Hornets :

I'm sure the strategy now will be to post the 140 lb. Sanikidze up, feed him and watch him do what he do in the paint.

Game's over, don't know anything else because i'm listening to 1320kfan.com (jazz sports radio) and they're talking about the jazz who are warming up right now. Hopefully the RMR website updates soon. http://www.nba.com/jazz/Revue/2007_Rocky_Mountain_Revue_Schedule.html

Nothing still.

Might as well start making up the stats:

Roberson with 20 points and 4 assists
Marcus Williams shots 3-for-11 with one assist and two rebounds
James White goes for 11 and 4!
Harryazz starts and goes for 8 and 6
CJ Watson with 12 and 2

Sanikidze finally plays real minutes and we couldn't watch the game. Williams line looked impress if you take out his FG%.

Hopefully this is one of the games that is replayed on NBAtv.

Williams outplayed Byars?

:stirpot:

Mr. Body
07-13-2007, 11:29 PM
Byars only got 3 shots but the rest of his statline wasn't bad. 5 rebs, 3 as/1 to, 2 blocks. But this is what should happen for the rest of the league: give Williams the ball and figure out his spots and ways.

timvp
07-13-2007, 11:30 PM
Well, the Sixers were leading 63-32 at the half. Given that, I wonder how much of Williams' and Sanikidze's stats were inflated by playing in garbage time summer league minutes

Either way, the fact that Sanikidze has seemingly played well in summer leagues when not matched up with Corey Brewer gives hope for him in the future. Maybe not this year but he's still alive as a prospect.

Is there a line for Williams? I can't find it on NBA.com.

Thanks. Glad to see he finally started to assert himself. His FG% will come. He'll be a fine player if he can figure this stuff out. Like Mr. Body said, just let him touch the ball once every three possessions and deal with it.

Good lookin' line for a kid who was struggling so much. Thanks.

Turnovers will be an issue until he finds his feet. Once comfortable, however, his ability is unreal.

I know some of you are probably tired of hearing me rant and rave about Williams, but I'll say it again, the 20-11 Wilcats were 9-2 when Williams scored 20 or more points. When he's one, he's a winner. He needs to find consistacy with his stroke, improve his ballhandling in traffic and keep up the defensive intensity, but he's a winner and it looks like he's starting to get it again.

With Butler gone, the Spurs might as well just give Williams all the touches he can handle to see if they have anything. He was underwhelming in Vegas but perhaps he can get in some sort of a groove now that he should be the number one option.

Just milk him for the next four games and see if he's worth a roster spot.

BTW, I wonder if White is hurt or if the Spurs told him that he's not going to make the team and let him go early.

WHO'S HOT: Louis Williams, 76ers -- Fresh from a strong showing the NBA Summer League at Las Vegas, where he averaged 25.2 points and 5.0 over five games, Williams continued his hot hand as Philadelphia opened the seven-team, 16-game Revue with 91-75 win over San Antonio.

Williams logged just 15 minutes Friday, but he sent the 76ers into halftime with a commanding 63-32 lead by scoring 13 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field and 7-for-7 shooting from the free-throw line.

The 20-year-old also committed just one turnover during that span.

Philadelphia's reserve point guard did not play at all in the second half.

Also hot for the Sixers on Friday was hustle-happy forward Louis Amundson, who finished with 17 points, shot 6-of-8 from the field and pulled down 11 rebounds in 30 minutes.

Sixers 2007 lottery pick Thaddeus Young, from Georgia Tech, had a game-high 19 points.

WHO'S NOT: Marcus Williams, Spurs -- Selected in the second round of the 2007 draft, the University of Arizona product hit just 4-of-14 from the field in San Antonio's loss to Philadelphia.

Williams did have eight rebounds in 34 minutes, but he had five turnovers in that span as well.

Cold in the same game was 2007 first-rounder Jason Smith. The Philadelphia center from Colorado State started and played 21 minutes, but made just one of his eight shots from the field.

Meanwhile, one of Atlanta's first-round draft picks this year -- former Texas A&M point guard Acie Law -- opened the Revue just 3-of-13 from the field.

Guarantee Ludden puts a positive spin on it, if he writes about it.

Get used to seeing Marcus Williams in a Spurs uni....I'm pretty sure he's here to stay.

Anyone know if White is sitting out because of the injury or because they've given up on him?

I talked to Chip and a couple of staffers who were assisting him after the game and they just said hegot the day off when I posed the question. It kinda made me think he is either getting dealt or that Flight was a little too :drunk in Vegas and needed a day to sleep it off. But White was really friendly with Chip, joking around and all smiles after the game, so who knows, it's prolly just the ankle.

I happened to be sitting next to one of Thaddeus Young's family members at the game too. He could be a good project to be an understudy for Bruce. 6.8" athletic, likes to shoot from the corners, and a decent hustle player. I was also impressed by Morris Almond. He has a great stroke and will likely contribute for Utah. His folks were at the game and they were really good people too. The guy I assumed was his dad was obviously really proud of the kid.

Then they can cut him if they want!

Ok.

Anyways, White didn't play in this game as it was his DNP. But Sanikidze and Williams both logged big minutes. Also, Butler was gone by this point as well.

Thoughts on Williams in this game...

I counted 5 blocks total by Marcus in the first game versus the Sixers.

He was also very disruptive in the passing lanes, using every inch of his arms to get his hands on balls. He just seems to have a nose for the ball on defense.

Offensively, I saw a couple positives. The first was his ball-handling ability and the second was his ability to finish once he got to the hole.

Now the negatives....he still seems a bit tentative shooting and that shooting form should give him good reason. I don't care how much it goes in during shootaround, he's not accurate in game situations and Chip clearly has a new project. It's just really bad form. In fact, the announcers took time to talk about how it had a natural side-spin instead of the back-spin that it's supposed to have.

Overall...I don't think he was as bad as the stat sheet suggested for game 1 of the RMR. He is definitely solid on defense, and I have a feeling that'll be enough for the Spurs to keep him around through training camp and into next year.
