DALLAS (July 14, 2007) — The Dallas Mavericks announced early this morning that they have signed free agent foward Alexander Johnson. As per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Johnson (6-9, 240) was originally the Pacers second round draft pick(45th overall) in the 2006 NBA Draft. In one year as a Grizzlie, Alexander saw action in 59 games, starting 19, and averaged 4.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 0.6 assists while shooting 54.0% from the field.

The Albany, GA, native spent his only season with the Memphis Grizzlies. Last year he had a career-best 23 points, 10 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 block in a December 26th game at Washington. Alexander shot 53.8% from the field and 66.1% from the free throw line.

As a standout at Flordia State, Alexander averaged 13.2 points and 7.4 rebounds his junior year. Standing 6-9 and with a chiseled frame and the type of explosiveness that most players can only dream of, he shows most of the all-around attributes and skills you want to see in an NBA power forward — potentially at the very least. His feet are extremely nimble, his vertical leap is off the charts, and he gets off his feet as quickly as any big man in the country, often to pull down monster rebounds well out of his area. He has some very nice basic post moves, including a sweet jump-hook shot that he gets off fundamentally with an extremely high release point. He also surprises at times with a lightning quick first step and some rudimentary ball-handling skills.

Earlier today, Memphis Grizzlies General Manager and Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Wallace announced today the team has requested waivers on forward Alexander Johnson. Once the waiver was passed, Dallas was quick to jump on the 6-9 power foward.

“We are really excited about Alexander joining the Mavericks,” President of Basketball Operations Donn Nelson said. “His energy and attitude were the determining factors in this decision. He will bring added athleticism to our front line.”

Johnson should add some some support to a Mavericks front line who struggled against the athletic Golden State Warriors in the first round of the 2007 NBA Playoffs.

This guy's too much of a project for you guys anyway. He's talented (skinny, but talented) but not really worth the roster spot right now. Don't worry...you're like the Spurs: solid, established, and ready for next season.

No matter what any other teams do, they still have to go thru us to win a title.
