E3: PS3 price cut temporary?

Sony execs indicate discounted $499 PlayStation 3 may disappear from stores in mere months.
By Mike Smith

Could the welcomed $100 price cut for Sony's PlayStation 3 be temporary? Reported comments from multiple Sony execs in online publications Gamesindustry.biz and Joystiq.com indicate so. The current PlayStation 3 model, which is equipped with a 60 GB hard drive, certainly has received a price cut to $499 and is available at that price right now - but Sony's recent statements indicate that model is no longer in production.

If that's accurate, once those sell out, which could take as little as 1-3 months, the only PlayStation 3 model that's available will be the just-announced premium version. Going on sale in August and equipped with an 80 GB hard drive and racing game Motorstorm, it'll set purchasers back $599. Barring further price cuts, holiday shoppers would potentially still be faced with a $600 PS3, although they'd be getting more for their money.

500 bucks is still a shit load more than what I'm willing to pay for a console

What's funny is the Xbox 360 product manager called it in an interview on Thursday, and got reemed for it. Now this comes out Friday, he's looking pretty smart.

Besides that, whether it's 500 or 600 the thing is still overpriced. Call me when it gets down to 400.

By the way, I love the BS about them selling out in 1-3 months. There's reportedly 1.5 million or so consoles out there, I don't see them moving that many during the slow summer months.

One reason to get one while you can is that the 60GB ones actually have the PS2 hardware built into them and will play any PS1 or PS2 titles. The new PS3s will be software only backwards compatibility (like the 360) and only select titles will play.

Maybe if they ever release some decent games for it people would get them. Personally I think the 360 has way better games. With all the processing power the PS3 has you would think they would have made some great game to show it off.

The problem, FreeMad, is that Sony is so focused on Bluray and the HD media war they're basically screwing over their gaming demographic.

And if you buy one between 7/1/07 - 9/30/07 you can get 5 free blu-ray dvds for free. Given, I don't watch to many movies so I can't tell if any of these are actually good. Can someone tell me which ones are good? lol. http://www.gamestop.com/gs/files/sb_onlineform.pdf

I wouldn't even rent most of those free blu-ray movies.

Blazing Saddles is the absolute shit, but I can't imagine how blu-ray would give it any benefit. No special effects and visuals, just good old fashioned comedy.

E3 actually made me excited about the PS3 especially for MGS4. This time next year I think the PS3 will start selling b/c the library will be much better.

What hurt them this year other than the big price tag was the losing of PS3 exclusives that might have caused people to buy one (along with MGS4). With the biggest ones being: Grand Theft Auto IV, Assassin's Creed, and Devil May Cry IV.
