XP not an option any longer?

I'm doing some notebook shopping and I'm having trouble finding anything that comes with XP preinstalled. I thought I remember reading that many of the large manufactuers where going to give people the option of choosing XP as opposed to taking Vista.

Was this incorrect?

Does anyone know where I can get a notebook with XP preloaded or will I have to install it afterwards?

Nah - if it comes down to it Ill just install XP on there myself. I'm not too worried about driver conflicts since I'm not getting anything that wasn't being made for XP and just had Vista force fed to it anyway.

The notebooks I'm looking at will have no more than 1gb of RAM and there is no way Vista will run well on something like that. I don't understand the point of selling notebooks in that price range with Vista. Someone who doesn't know what the hell they're buying is going to think that their new computer is running slow as hell and sucks when its really just being bogged down by a memory hog of an OS.

Windows XP to be phased out by year's end despite customer demand

Computer makers have been told they'll no longer be able to get Windows XP OEM by the end of this year, despite consumer resistance to Vista and its compatibility problems.

By early 2008, Microsoft's contracts with computer makers will require companies to only sell Vista-loaded machines. "The OEM version of XP Professional goes next January," said Frank Luburic, senior ThinkPad product manager for Lenovo. "At that point, they'll have no choice."

Despite Microsoft's relentless promotion of Vista, manufacturers are still seeing plenty of demand from customers for systems preloaded with XP, especially in the finicky SOHO market.

Dell Latitudes still offer XP ...

I think what you'll find is that "business" notebooks will offer XP.
"home and home office" do not offer XP.

You can get Business notebooks with options for XP or Vista but I'm not sure about Personal/Home models any more. I don't think Dell or HP have personal models with XP.

The business notebooks don't usually have much software pre-loaded.

There are a some refurb units at the HP website (hpshopping.com) that come with XP, some of which are decent boxes. Just type "Windows XP" in the search box. If you want XP preinstalled on a home unit that would be one way to do it.

what's the difference between a business notebook and home/personal? Just the amount of crap they load on it?

Home machines have superior video displays and graphics for one thing. Business notebooks focus more on weight and size.

After 5 months I finally caved in and went back to XP. I might go back to Vista after a service pack or two.

Unless you know your stuff, you might want to get some advice before installing XP on a Vista system. Some people partition and set up a dual boot of XP and Vista. There are some gotchas 64 bit versus 32 bit. If you wipe the disk, you may need to get the XP drivers for the disk drive or it may not see the drive to boot up.

In short, get some help if you decide to change it from Vista to XP.

Well most of the notebooks i've looked at are the same exact models that were using XP a months ago and being sold as Vista Ready. They're lower end models and what not. But you're advice is sound.

Manny, check the manufacturers warranty before you buy, we were told that if you change the OS it would void it. I dont know if this has changed recently, but its worth a check.

Because of the driver/application issue most manufacturers aren't loading desktops/laptops with the 64 bit version unless requested, so that shouldn't cause an issue Manny (but it wouldn't hurt to ask).

Both of my home machines (desktop and laptop) are running Vista and only have 1GB of RAM. Both of these machines were upgraded from XP and I see no difference in speed except that with Vista installed bootup is quicker. So as long as you aren't going to be using memory intensive applications (which I don't) 1GB is fine.

Does your mother require some XP-only application or driver? Otherwise, I think you would be better off with Vista, which does try to be more secure.

Are you running Vista Home Basic or Vista Home Premium? I'd heard that Premium really requires closer to 2 GB than 1.I run Vista Ultimate on both.
