Hey everyone. I've lurked your board for a while but have never made a post. Yes, I am a Lakers fan but I have a lot of respect for your organization. I also grew up with CJ Watson and I was wondering if you guys feel he is going to make the final 15 man roster (or if he has a good chance of making it etc.)
Any thought or opinions on CJs games throughout the summer league so far?
I'm sure you all have followed the summer league closely so any information/opinions on his chances of making the Spurs squad would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
It's not going to happen. There just arent any spots really...on top of the fact that the spurs have 3 pg's on the roster.

He seems like a good kid but he needs a little more work on his court awareness if he wants to be a point guard in the NBA. Right now, he plays like a shooting guard in a point guard's body.
The Spurs' mouthpiece (Ludden) has been praising him pretty consistently so if Beno is moved, I wouldn't be shocked to see Watson in camp.

That's what Pop wants...is there any other reason you can come up with for why every PG on the roster plays that way? And doesn't get yanked off the court? We always rip these guys for doing it...how come they don't get yanked off the court for it? Beno is getting yanked off for his d...not for trying to take over the game every time he comes into it.
Barry is the only guy on the Spurs that plays like a PG...and it pisses Pop off.

Now Jacque Vaughn is a shoot first PG?

You haven't seen Jacque come in and try to take over the game? I have...it's what he does that pisses me off.
What was he doing that pissed you off?
Aside from the TO that were caused by him trying to take over the game I mean.

Aside from the TO that were caused by him trying to take over the game I mean.Vaughn pisses me off when he tries to do anything other than pass the ball when he crosses half court or shoot open jumpers.
That said, Vaughn is a pass first point guard if there were ever a pass first point guard. He's perhaps the most pass first point guard in the league.

And he does that often.

Except when he's not doing that...which was often this season...with no yanking by Pop.
And he's not as much of a pass first guard as Barry...surely you aren't going to try to argue this.
IF you are talking about skill set I agree 100%...but that isn't how he plays often on this team. Usually when everyone's getting pissed off at him. He often comes into the game and immediate goes into the paint trying to jack it up over multiple defenders...just like Beno...
Every guard on our team and in this organization does that...and Pop never yanks them for it...just like Bowen puts it on the floor and does that pull up.
Pop wants that crap. IF Watson wasn't playing like the Spurs wanted...he wouldn't be getting the minutes and shots he's getting.

Thanks for the info. I will say it's pretty surprising to hear that he is a "shooting guard in PG body" though because in high school he was both a scorer and passer. In college he was more of a passer then scorer and at times his coaches wanted him to shoot the ball more. He was among the top few players in assists in his conference (SEC) all four years in college so it might be what the coaches are telling him to do here. Despite the fact that there are barely any roster spots open I am hoping he at least gets invited to camp before the season starts.

You think Barry is more of a pass first point guard than Vaughn even though that's exactly what Vaughn is and Barry doesn't even play point.
This is a worse take than your CIA V-Span take :dizzy

If CJ learned how to be a point guard he'd prob be ok.

While fans thought he shot too much, and passed too little, in summer league----- the FO and Ludden seemed to have enjoyed it. Maybe he was told to shoot more and give the Spurs a chance to see his offensive game. If Beno is miraculously traded, Watson could have a shot as 3rd string PG.

Could we say the same about Beno? :lol

We have no roster spots from 1-12 unless we unload a player. That player has to be functional not a project. Projects will be on the IR like Mahinmi + 2 others. CJ could play for the Toros all year. I doubt he can replace Beno because Beno knows our system and most newbees need a year.

If Beno gave a shit about the game of basketball by staying in shape and working on his game, hed prob be the best backup point guard in basketball.

:LMAO absolutely classic
In 10 words or less he invalidates his own anti-Barry stance.
Your evidence is to cite like a .2 per 48 difference for a guy that is one of the best shooters in the NBA vs a guy with no shot?
Ok fair enough...let's do it your way....which one averages fewer 2pt shots per 48? You know...inside the arc where PG's go to create.
As for the assist......well, you'll get a lot more assists passing it to Brent Barry than you will to Vaughn...and it's got nothing to do with shot attempts.
And Vaughn only averaged like .2 apg per 48 more than Parker...I guess that means Parker is a pass first PG too.
You think Barry is more of a pass first point guard than Vaughn even though that's exactly what Vaughn is and Barry doesn't even play point.
Who's the better passer throughout their careers? Best season? Best Game?
Which guy is not supposed to shoot? outside of 10 feet....if even then.
This is a worse take than your CIA V-Span take :dizzy
And what's your next great take? AI is a better scorer than Duncan because he score more point per 48?
Absolutely classic timvp...it's good to know that you don't think Barry passes too many shots...I'll remember you said that.

Vaughn is the epitome of a pass first point guard. Every now and then he'll try to take a scoring approach, but it's usually when he's left wide open for a shot. He doesn't try to go TP and take on everyone in the paint at all - you can count the number of times he did that in the PO on one hand.

I'd say thats a pretty big "if".
Thats like saying "if I learned to shoot pretty well I'd be a good shooter".
Watson is a decent player, but I'm not sure how much you can convert his game at this point. He is what he is, and I'm not sure we can simply change him.

I can guarantee you I am not CJ Watson. Just an old friend of his who was curious as to his chances of making the team. I think CJ has more important things going on right now.
