From what I remember that was pretty good.

Another good one was from the Sci Fi original movie Children of Dune, I highly recommend that one.

I'm a big Danny Elfman fan. And not just his Burton stuff, but the more subtle scores as well -- Good Will Hunting, for example. Also liked the Dust Brothers score for Fight Club. And Neil Young's score for Dead Man. The hipster/jazzy scores in the Oceans' movies have been good.

As far as traditional orchestral film scores... hard to answer since my favorites are usually the ones that you barely notice during the film. I don't like when the music is trying too hard to tell me how I should feel during a particular scene.

Elfman's score for Sleepy Hollow was damn good. His work on The Nightmare before Christmas and The Simpsons is his finest IMHO.

Philip Glass, Morricone and Mancini are three of the best.

Glass's score for The Illusionist is one of my favorites. I saw him do a performance where he redid the score for Nosferatu, I think it was. Fantastic.

The best ones are the scores that subtly compliment the movie rather than becoming a focal point
Just to nmae a few, other than Lawrence, which haven't been mentioned

Lawrence of Arabia
Lone Star
The Last Picture Show
Dr Zhivago

The too often forgotten genius, Bernard Herrmann:
Psycho
Taxi Driver
Cape Fear-the original
Citizen Kane
The Man Who Knew Too Much
The Day the Earth Stood Still
The Birds
For some of the others:

Not quite, John Williams had compose Star Wars before that . . . that was the mother of them all.

Arguably, it was either Jaws (1975) or The Cowboys/Poseidon Adventure (1972) that got JW going. All were sweeping film scores where the music told a lot of the story.

But did you know JW's first Oscar nomination came for "Valley of the Dolls" (1967) or that he scored "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" (1969), which also garnered an Oscar nomination?

His first Emmy was for 1968's "Heidi". Yes, the same one that famously interrupted an NFL game and millions of people lost the opportunity to see a furious comeback.

Some of his early work was featured on "Gilligan's Island" and "Lost in Space" - the 60's TV series. No awards there.

Yeah, I hear you with all that.
Some of that I did not know, and I'm impressed.
(Gilligan's Island, Lost In Space??)

But, in terms of the best movie score . . . his Star Wars score trumps Superman (both equally good) by virtue of being composed before Superman.

well i forgot to mention them, but ennio morricone is the best imo, hands down. once upon a time in the west (man with a harmonica is sublime), the man with no name "trilogy," and countless other movies. the collection "the legendary Italian westerns" (pretty comprehensive) is on my iPod and a staple for listening. what's amazing is he never won an oscar.

I agree completely. Morricone has created some of the finest scores in cinematic history. Top to bottom, his work is amazing, and what's great is that he really doesn't have a 'signature' style; especially with how prolific he is. He was given an honorary I think.
