See -- he couldn't have played in San Antonio because Don Harris would have made him change his number.
Michael Finley's #4 is going to hang from the rafters someday, baby!

Though Scola has signed with the Rockets, his contract will not be effective until they complete the buyout of his deal with Tau Ceramica.

i think you get dumber by the post, i seriously hope you are just bored and talking out of your ass for the hell of it, because a dude that can't rebound, doesn't play that good of defense won't scare anyone, parker and manu will have a field day driving on him, and duncan will make scola his prison bitch........ scola won't ever average more then 13 points a game, he may score 20 here and there, but he is not gonna make the rockets better then the spurs, sure he makes them a better team overall but not better then the spurs........they are still the third best team in texas. hell, they still might not even be better then the jazz, cause boozer will fuck scola up too............
and scola not coming here has nothing to do with alcoholic holt being cheap, it's just scola wouldn't have fit with us, he probably didn't want to come off the bench, and he doesn't seem to have that work ethic you need to be great, he cares only about scoring it seemed from the way he acted when the spurs told him he needs to learn to rebound better.............. so fuck scola and fuck the rockets, it's still gonna be
spurs >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> rockets

Scola, 27, said he's excited to play with Yao and All-Star Tracy McGrady and that they're the first thing he thought of when he learned he'd be playing for the Rockets.
"It's great to be with them," he said. "I'm sure they're going to help me much more than I'm going to help them."

Yeah... when they aren't on the IR or flat on their back having spasms.
Someone else may have posted this....I haven't read every single thread on the subject.
Scola signed a 3-year deal for $9.3 million. The Rockets are also going to contribute the max-allowable $500K to his $3.2 million buyout with Tau.
That leaves Scola with a buyout balance of $2.7 million. The Rockets are going to pay Scola a big chunk of the $9.3 million this year, so he can make the buyout.
Assume he makes the buyout, and divides the remaining salary over the 3 years of the contract. That would mean the Rockets would be paying out $5.4 million this season to get Scola on the roster. ($500K + $2.7 M buyout + $2.2 M salary.) The numbers could be a little different, but I think he will cost them a good $5 M this year.
He would have cost the Spurs at least that. Throw in the loss of the $1.8 Million payment for going into the luxury tax, and Scola would have cost the Spurs' organization close to $7 Million for the upcoming season. That's a pretty big pill to swallow. Maybe he will turn out to be worth it. But I have always had some question about him at 6'9". I don't think he will be able to handle the other team's biggest men on the defensive end, which would force Duncan to do it. Maybe he will really be able to command constant attention on the offensive end - the kind that would consistently take heat off of Duncan. If not, he wouldn't have been worth the money for the Spurs.
Jackie Butler has some skills... but he isn't a player you would refer to as "cerebral". There's no nicer way of saying it - defense is San Antonio's mainstay, and Jackie Butler wasn't ever going to make the grade, even as a sub. The Spurs can handle a player who subs into their scheme, but at a slightly lower level than the starter. Butler would be playing a different game.
Butler was taking up a roster spot with virtually no chance of contributing to another championship this season, or of being a building block for the future. Yes, it would have been nice to get something more for him. But it also would have been very easy to wind up with him sitting on the roster when the season starts. In my opinion, that would have been a disaster for a team looking to repeat as NBA Champions. There is a chance that the player who fills the roster spot helps them win this year. There was no chance that Butler would have. Getting to drop Spanoulis' salary, in addition to the roster spot, is no small thing for the upcoming season.
Look at it this way: what if the Spurs shelled out $5 Million this year to get Scola on the squad, and he took a year to get acclimated like Oberto? And what if they were unable to get a first-round pick for Butler, and he wound up on the roster as well? Nobody on this board seems to believe that Beno will be a contributor. There isn't a huge outrcy in favor of Barry. And as much as I like Robert Horry, he is going to be playing short minutes - especially during the regular season.
Was it a good trade? Considering the big picture - I think it was.

Still no. Nothing can move this past the fact the Spurs greatly improved a rival for mere money.

After Duncan, Scola will be the best PF playing currently in the NBA...Book it, this guy is amazing!
After Duncan, Scola will be the best PF playing currently in the NBA...Book it, this guy is amazing!
I'll book it. He'll come out this season and be better than Kevin Garnett, Dirk Nowitzki, Drew Gooden, Zach Randolph, and Rasheed Wallace.
And that's only the pure "power forwards". We won't even count the fact that Duncan is listed as a FC, along with Carlos Boozer (same height as Scola), Al Harrington (same height as Scola), Elton Brand (an inch shorter than Scola), Chris Bosh and Amare Stoudamire (both only 1 inch taller than Scola). All of those guys could be put in the PF category, some easier than others.
I've booked it. But Scola is gonna have to be pretty fucking good to live up to that. Sure you don't want to reconsider?
Oh, Gee!!
07-17-2007, 11:47 PM
the Spurs do not need another ugly player, so I think the trade was a good one
Oh, Gee!!

Just so we're all clear, Scola is one pug-fugly dude
BTW - I've lived overseas and watched those guys playing in that pie-wedge-shaped paint. Yeah, there is some talent in the Euro Leagues. But it is also a place where guys like Mengke Bateer can get some decent minutes. A standout PF there isn't playing the same game as they play in the NBA.
Scola may adapt to the NBA and be a solid performer. But put him up against the Cavs that we faced in the Finals, with all of the help defense looking for LeBron James? Drew Gooden is going to light his ass up. And heads-up against Rasheed Wallace? When Sheed isn't getting himself ejected, he'll be making Scola understand why Manu always has so many bruises. At least in the first season...who knows after that?
Sorry...but this season Scola won't be the best PF on the floor most nights - much less in the whole NBA. And if he proves me wrong, I'll be the first to come back and say so.

You're an over-reacting doofus, seriously.
I agree it was a poor deal in basketball terms, but the Rockets did not become better than us because of it. :rolleyes
