Durant Turns Down $70M Offer From Adidas

Seattle Times -
Sonics forward Kevin Durant scored the second-largest endorsement contract for an NBA rookie when he signed a seven-year, $60 million deal with Nike that included a $10 million signing bonus.

The Beaverton, Ore.-based shoe and apparel company and Durant's agent Aaron Goodwin confirmed the announcement Wednesday.

According to industry sources, Durant declined a seven-year, $70 million deal with Adidas that included a $12 million signing bonus largely because he has a long history with Nike dating to the eighth grade in Washington, D.C.

"At the end of the day, Kevin has been with Nike his whole career and he felt comfortable with them," Goodwin said. "He took the time to give Adidas the opportunity and they're a great company, but he chose the company that he's more familiar with. And we build brands on authenticity and it's more authentic for him to be somewhere where he wants to be and he's comfortable."

Durant's sneaker deal will include a signature shoe that will be unveiled after his rookie season.

I'm sure one of the leagues he played in, or teams he played for were sponsored by nike.

Wow. Leaving $10M on the table? That's quite fucking stupid. He could have been Adidas' signature NBA player. Instead, he takes $10M less to be a LeBronette.

It's a business. Nike would drop him in a heartbeat if it made business sense to them, if his sneaker tanked or he didn't turn into Garnett II. You take the most you can get from whoever offers it. If Nike offers you $70M you take it. If Fred's shoes offers you $80M you take it.

I don't blame him.

Adidas is a wack shoe company with ugly styles. No one will buy his shoes, just like KG's or TD's... who wants them? Lebron's and Kobe's... hot sellers. Dwayne Wade with converse... give me a break.

It's about styles these days... in the long run he will gain the money back from amount of shoes sold.

That is so dumb......so what you are saying, is everyone should go with Nike and wear Nike??!! :rolleyes

Actually I have two pair of adidas......because Nike is starting to look fadish and weird. The adidas I bought are simple and cool looking, not all the whacked out bling that Nike has brought to the table.

Basically, its all personal taste. Young people like LOUD Bling shoes and mature people want a clean look.
