PALM DESERT, Calif. (AP) _ Melvin Ely is impressing new Los Angeles Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy with his efforts at training camp.

The second-year player out of Fresno State averaged 4.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 15.4 minutes in 52 games last season. Ely is expected to play power forward and some center.

``Melvin defensively had been very good for us,'' Dunleavy said Wednesday. ``I expect him to be one of the nine guys in the rotation. He's done a great job of rotations, being in the right spot. I'm really pleased with his work.''

The 6-foot-10, 241-pound Ely was going hard at the end of the half-court scrimmage and was battling for the ball in a scrum against Elton Brand, Quentin Richardson and Chris Wilcox. The four hit the floor and although Ely was slow to get up, he wasn't injured.

``He has a decent medium range jumper and is good at the low post as well as rebounding,'' Dunleavy said.

The coach is looking at numerous rotations and how players fit in. Dunleavy expects to keep 15 or 16 of his 19 players on the training camp roster until the first preseason game Oct. 7 in Sacramento. link (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/gen/wire?messageId=24270066)
