Anyone into astronomy? We bought my 10 yo a really nice telescope for her birthday and are having alot of fun with it. Any recommendations on books or sites? So far we have seen Jupiter, Saturn, Venus and the craters on the moon.

That is fun!
When I was younger I bought one too and had lots of fun with. It's fun looking up at the sky and 'wonder'- you know?

Keep it up!!

Try Space.com (http://www.space.com/nightsky/) for some good scoop.

Also, find a dark place on 12 August, the Perseid shower will peak that night.

The stars and the Universe have always fasinated me.

I remember always checking out books about the planets and galaxies when I was a kid.

I think it's pretty cool that you're doing this with your kids.

My soon to be 12 year old thought he might want a telescope for his birthday, but then decided he wanted a Wii instead.

If he changes his mind let me know and I can fill you in on the best scope for newbies. I researched them and got one off ebay in mint condition and it is so easy to use.

Fun, fun Flea, when the little one's get a little older, you might consider the Davis Mtns. and the McDonald Observatory! Awesome! In the mean time if you need a dark place to look through, Pm ME

I so want a high speed telescope to intorduce my kids too.

My family has a place in Real county that gets spooky dark and you can see the entire Milky Way stretching from horizon to horizon. Few years back I camped up ther to I could see the Hale-Bopp(?) comet (Which to the naked eye was unreal). I'll be there during the meteor shower happens, so I'm setting a camera to record the event.

I bought the Orion Skyquest XT6 for $180.00. I arranged for local pick up
(SP Island, was going down there anyway) so I didnt have to pay shipping. This version used to sell for $369 a couple of years ago, the newer version of this model sells for $269, don't know what the exact changes are. Shipping is usually around $50.

We are usually in Hunt on the river during that time and sometimes the meteor showers are fantastic!
