What assholes (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2940570)
This part pisses me off the most:
"No matter how lofty public welfare activities are, they can't be allowed to take first place in a player's life,'' the China Sports Daily, a federation-owned newspaper, said in an article appearing Tuesday.
"No matter how sweet personal life is, it can't be compared to the exultation of capturing glory for one's nation,'' the article said.
You mean he was helping out at the special olympics and planning his wedding. What a self-centered prick! :rolleyes

As I said in other posts, the Chinese government has control over what Chinese basketball players do. Yao Ming pays 50% of his income to the Chinese sports bureau. And Yi Jianlian has no control over where he will be...
Our basketball players (and to a certain extent, most people in the country) just can't decide our own future.

People are just beginning to realize the level of control the Chinese government has?

Surprised? China's government has been like this for years. They could care less what other people think; they have a formidable military, and a lot of economic clout to threaten 'em with.

Latest issue of Business Week has a main article on China and its economic problems if anyone's interested.
Just a thought (there may be other factors here...), but is there anything stopping Yao Ming from applying for US citizenship and giving the Chinese Gov't the finger and keeping 100% of his max deal?

China isnt half as formidable as you believe them to be. Their economic ascension is good, but inflated by colusion.

they'd probably put his family still in china in a detention camp and fine them obscene amounts of money they could never pay.

It would basically be akin to defecting, and I'm sure he still has a large number of family and friends in China that he would not want to be cut off from.

you just can't call the whole nation of China
"bunch of &*@ , just for some of the people behind team China. And in fairness to those people who's running their players for basketball they are also weary of their team's future. Yao have the reason to spend some time preparing for his wedding but the team also spent so much for the development of their players, they trained people as young as 8 yrs old, spent money on them and they also want something in return.
BTW, Yao already returned to practice yesterday so..

Asians are smarter, soon they will rule the world.I'm Asian but I don't agree with you.
America, being the richest country will still rule the World.
Asians just want to see if they get the respect they deserve from other parts of the world.

His own family, probably. I'm pretty sure they want Yao to play for the national team, seeing as both his parents did too; and they'd probably get mad at him if he didn't.

You could argue that the US invests a lot in its players as well (England and TP's jumpshot anyone?). But you don't see the US stopping players from competing in international competitions. They may "voice their concerns" but they're not flat out telling the players what to do

China´s government is like Cuba´s government, but richer coze they control the money of 1 billon people.
The communist governments always have full control of people´s life and people´s own economy and moneys.
