View Full Version : Should Tim Duncan give up his number for Splitter?

Can a mere number define Tim Duncan? I think not...

Think of the statement it would make...groundbreaking.

I don't see why Duncan would need to change his number. The Spurs already have another person on their side (http://www.probasketballrefs.com/Default.aspx?tabid=86) wearing number 21.

A third number 21 would be fine.

Tim would never give up his number. when he's gone nobody should be allowed to wear 21 for the spurs again.

alright whatever, i guess next year tim will be number 99 so splitter can have 21

Wouldn't it be cool if Duncan just said...you go ahead, the number is meaningless...I'll make another one.

Then he could have two retired jerseys like MJ.

Just sayin'...it'd be different, and unconventional. Could start a trend.

#21 and perhaps he can then take #12 so Bowens gets retired without argument.

If numbers aren't important then why would Slitter care?

On the other hand, it would boost TD's jersey sales like KB24.

I agree...why don't you help it out by not viewing and participating in it anymore?

I mean ask yourself something...do you really think it's better because of your participation? Did it get any smarter after you entered it? No it didn't.

There are no stupid questions...only stupid people that lack the intellectual capacity to appreciate the necessity of asking any and all questions.

I for one am aghast that so many Spursfan consider Duncan to be nothing more than a mere number. As if that could do his magnificient basketball skills justice.

In biblical terms...isn't the act of assigning numbers to people a signal of the impending apocalypse? Doesn't Tim Duncan deserve better than that?

I think the only way you could do Duncan justice by retiring his number...is if you just retire the number 21 period. From and all usage in number lines, mathematical equations etc. ...then maybe, just maybe, it would be reflective of what he has done in his career.

Additionally, IF Duncan were to just say...sure, he can have my number...it would increase his greatness...then he would be lauded for his lack of ego, celebrated for his willingness to treat a teamate as an equal...it'd just be an unprecedented act of leadership and breaking the mold of the typical superstar character, actions, tributes and behaviors IMO.

I think the idea has merit...if Duncan were to do this, it could only increase his greatness, and set him even further apart from the typical superstar.

Something to think about.

The only question left to answer is whether Duncan could be quicker with a different number. Specifically, the quickness of his first step.

IF he went single digits..or something like 11...his jersey would weigh less.

Duncan's greatness is already appreciated by the Spurs and their fans.
He will be in the HOF, his place in the top ranks of all time is already secured.

He's already "broken the mold of the typical superstar character" just by being who he is on and off the court.
He treats his teammates as his equals, we've heard Pop say it, Horry has said it.
He's already lauded for his lack of ego, that's part of what separates him from most superstars.

I don't think Duncan is about "increasing his greatness", I think he's about winning. If giving up his number would increase his odds of winning I bet he'd do it in a minute.

I'd like to see him retire a Spur, then see the Spurs retire his number. It's how a team recognizes an important franchise player.

Duncan is certainly that.

No, and I'll tell you why. It's not about him "being just a number". It's mental. Tim is one of the most superstitious players you will ever meet. He still does that "backwards practice shorts thing" under his game shorts after he had one good college game well over a decade ago. This is NOT a man who likes to change his routine if it isn't absolutely necessary.

why would duncan give up his number for tiago?
Its stupid and unrealistic...what if the spurs FO said to duncan next year when he's a free agent how about just 3 years 10 million? There is no doubt in my mind that Duncan would leave for another team. I know he is unselfish, but there would be no way he would do such a thing(he is the franchise player and will be expected to be treated like so) so that the spurs could sign another big time all star free agent. He would demand no less than the max amount he can get...until he is on his last legs like david robinson he won't sign for a veteran's min
The spurs FO isn't going to ask duncan to change his number because it is his number...it is HIS legacy..when they retire his number it will be 21 and it is meaningful..

you guys think that duncan won't take it as a insult but every person has pride and telling your franchise player..."hey uh tim...tiago wants 21, we think if you change numbers with him and we sign him,...our chances of winning would increase..so uh i don't know maybe you can't just take 19 or something ok?
I know it's just a number...but to ask Duncan to do something like this...in my eyes(just my opinion) is a slap in his face
So in the end of the day...Tiago will sign and get whatever number, Spurs will win 2-3 more championships in the Duncan Era, and Duncan will retire as number 21 and enter the HOF in however long it takes
i never posted before i just thought this thread is ridiculous and i wanted to say something about it......

Splitter should pay homage to Bowen and Duncan by wearing 121.

Duncan should celebrate his geekness by changing to 15, which is 21 in hexadecimal.

He should be allowed to put whatever he wants on his jersey, because Tim Duncan is a winner and winners get to do what they want.

He should put "PIMP" or "BAMF" on his jersey. That'd sell hotter than crack cocaine.

But if it has to be numbers I'm hung up between 69 and 420.

Duncan's first step would get much slower if he changed his number. He rarely even dribbles the ball as it is, now when he does it'll be a sure turnover.

Let's face it, folks, Tim Duncan is getting on in years and it's time the Spurs FO began planning for the next generation of titles after he's gone. That's why it was such a bad idea to get rid of the next "Big Three" - Scola, Butler and White. Add Splitter to that trio and you have yourselves a quartet that would be a title-winning machine.

Tim Duncan's not human. Look at those fucking things he has instead of thumbs. TD was sent to Earth by an advanced basketball-playing species for a higher purpose we cannot presently divine:

Wow. I'm not much for guys switching numbers because of those fans that buy jerseys more than anything, but that would be a bad-ass gesture.

Though the idea of anyone, from Brazilian draft picks to the some fucking extraterrestrial born young player, ever handing out 21 on a Spurs jersey to a guy besides Tim is ludicrous. I'm already going to have a hard enough time explaining to my unborn children who the hell Sean Elliott is and why his jersey is up with all the Duncan-era guys when some stud wants 32 pulled down and thinks that's OK.

Fuck that.
