God killed Elvis because he was jealous of his voice.Every now and then, I somehow manage to convince myself that Elvis' legend has continued to grow mostly because of the cheesy/kitsch value of his later years. After all, I've been to Graceland twice -- its fun, its campy, its tacky, and has very little to do with Elvis' talent.

Then I put on the "Sun Sessions" CD and am reminded of how great he really was. Dude was fucking amazing.

It depends on what songs you're listening to. Go listen to "Can't Believe" and you'll see that he screams the whole song, or "Pressure" and he sings heavy the whole song. I think he has an amazing voice because he can scream, sing heavy, sing mellow, and sing high. Not many musicians I've ever heard can do that.

Geoff Tate is good too. :tu

But for the best vocals all-time, it's gotta be Freddie Mercury.

IMO, Chris Cornell has the greatest rock n roll voice of our generation. He has exceptional range with that whiskey-sour gruffness required to pull it all off.

The vocalists I listed earlier could all sing a completely different genre (and two of them did) and excel because they were blessed with Mariah Carey-like range.

Cornell can only do Rock n Roll, yet he is exceptional (and one helluva song writer at that, I still pop in that tune from the Great Expectations soundtrack and fucking weep that I didnt write that and couldnt hit the notes on my best day).

Does Amy Lee count? I like her a lot.

Evanescence are not rock, they fail the rock test on two counts: if you are on modern era MTV or "mix" radio stations, you are not rock.

Besides, I believe it states in the Bible that the only chicks allowed in Rock are the ones that the band members are shagging.

But not being Rock doesn't disqualify someone from being a good vocalist.

I love all on your list, and I will always love the Chili Peppers, but Kiedis is one of the mnost overated, worst singers I have ever heard. He has a good sense of what sounds good, but as far as actuall singing talent, I dont think I have ever heard anyone sing a bad version of a Chili peppers song at karaoke, anyone can sing what he sings.

I don't give two shakes what pusspuss thinks about my taste in music.

J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. fame is another unique and great voice.

If we're going with a classic rock group, Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy is a great choice.

I'd have to second or third any vote for Thom Yorke.

Scumdogs of the Universe was truely their best, but you should'nt view that as sad (seeing as how it was released in 1990) but they change, morph, and experiment.

1992's America Must Be Destroyed was like Scumdogs in response to the republican (neocon?) antisentiments they received when Oderus had a phallic prosthetic during his stage shows (you HAVE to watch Phallus in Wonderland.....)

1994's This Toilet Earth was an experiment, and a successful one. This is where Brockie turely uses his voice as an instrument, as opposed to a just a voice. Saddam a GoGo is not one of their top songs for no reason.

They did some of this and that but after the Middle Era GWAR, 2005's War Party is really when they came back. Bring Back the Bomb, Womb With a View, Decay of Granduer, Reaganator, Krosstika, all are great songs featuring Brokie's amazing vocals as well as a revamped GWAR's speed metal guitar riffs.

I wasn't aware this was about having Celine Dion ability to hit pitch, but as far as rock and roll goes, Geddy is a bad mofo. The high pitch thing is always cool if you can pull it off, and he was bad ass on songs from 2112, though he has lost ability to hit high notes like that sadly.

In terms of stage presence, I think Mich Jagger and Axl Rose can give him a run for his money.

Ever seen Live Aid?

Queen, opening to massive cheers with "Bohemian Rhapsody" and the antics of lead singer Freddie Mercury got the entire Wembley crowd clapping in unison to "Radio Ga Ga" and singing along, word-for-word, to "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions". Mercury's performance, including him dancing with a cameraman during "Hammer to Fall", led to Queen's slot being voted the best live gig ever in a recent poll.

You may need to give Axl two spots. The first being real high up on the list. The second being pretty low.

It just depends on which Axl chose to show up.

My cousin went to a pair of GnR concerts, the first for Appetite, the second for Illusion, and he said the first was amazing, the second was average.

I've heard his meltdowns and blowups rivaled his amazing signature shows.

I had to register for this site, just to respond to this. This is so laughable that I had to. Apparently you're pretty uncultured when it comes to music. Stage presence... have you ever heard of the Rolling Stones... Mick Jagger? Led Zeppelin... Robert Plant? AC/DC... Angus Young? Even though I hate him... Ozzy Osbourne? All these guys blow Freddie Mercury out of the water. And yes, I know Angus is a guitarist. He still kicks his ass.

By the way, I whole-heartedly agree on the Fogerty votes. Great, great singer. CCR is one of my top 3, definitely.

To whoever was talking about that "So Far Away" garbage that sell-out Staind did, yeah, Aaron Lewis used to be great... before he completely sold out to get on MTV, with garbage like that. Check out some of his earlier stuff on CD's "Dysfunction" and "Tormented". It isn't homo-oriented, like Break the Cycle and others since. The song "Home" has really good vocals on it. Particularly good is a song he did on... Warped Tour I believe, called "Outside", with Fred Durst, of all people. His voice gets old and tired after awhile, though. Voices like Jagger, Fogerty and Plant will last forever.

You obviously have no idea what youre talking about. Im glad you wasted your time to register just stick your head in your ass. Just because you dont like Queen or Freddie Mercury (nor do I, for that matter), doesnt mean he couldnt sing and didnt blow shows up.

Stage presence....Im not talking about Gwar-type stage presence with lots of props and moving parts. Im talking one guy carrying a show.

Apparently, many many rock magazines completely disagree with you as well. The Live Aid act has been consistently voted the greatest live rock performance ever. Glad you showed up though.

Mick Jagger, Robert Plant, Angus Young, Ozzy Osbourne... hm... yes, they are VERY similar to Gwar. Try making sense before you let your fingers go, dolt. You ask people to think of the 5 best frontmen ever, Freddie Mercury wouldn't hit the tongue of 85 out of 100 people. Mick Jagger would be there at least 80% of the time. As would Plant.

Live Aid act in 85? Yeah, Queen would probably be VERY highly-regarded, and well-reviewed... by a few homosexual writers who have friends that have tested HIV positive. In case you're slow, Freddie Mercury was a homosexual. Homosexuals stick together. I'm not the least bit surprised if a few homosexual writers wrote some good reviews of Queen. Who gives a shit about that concert anyway? Most of the singers and bands that were there were way past their primes. Consistently voted the best live performance of all-time? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH OK, give me a second... Woodstock anyone? Woodstock blows that shit out of the water, in anyone's book.

I end with this.

Soooo, youve come to SpursTalk and registered to tell me how wrong I am and that Freddie Mercury sucks.

Your basis for this is because of other bands popularity among the masses. Have you seen the Live Aid performance? Of course not, why did I ask, youre a homophobe.

So Freddie Mercury suck not based on vocals or songwriting, but because he was homosexual.

And that argument makes sense, to you and you alone. Youre a bigot and a cretin.

Nice keeping track of your own score and professing how much you win, btw. Thats never been done before. Ever. Seriously.

You make a pretty convincing arguement to the fact that you're an idiot. If you think that no one is aware of Freddie Mercury's sexuality, you're just a fucking retard.

So, you're going to take away from an amazing performance because the guy was gay?? What the fuck?

I'm secure enough in my own masculinity to give Mercury props for his amazing performance. You, apparently, are not. So, that more than likely means that you are a closet homosexual, or you're a pubescent teenager who thinks it's "cool" to call fags out on their faggedness. My guess: you're probably a mix of the two.

And, you said something about Woodstock . . . but we weren't even talking about comparing Woodstock to Live Aid. So, your point came out completely flat.

You're an idiot . . . accept that fact (along with the fact that you're probably gay) and you'll have a happier life.

There's nothing worse than a gay man hating on other gay men to make himself feel more manly.

His wife brought it to the forefront. That's how it's known.

Get over it. It's OK to still like his music. Even his flamboyant on-stage persona. It's OK... His wearing tight, belly-exposing pink tank tops is still just a part of his act. I doubt he was wearing such when Bowie's lady walked in on them...

Eddie Veder (Pearl Jam) -- How often is he imitated?
Gavin Hayes (Dredg) -- Not really known, but great lyrics and range
Thom York (Radiohead) -- No discussion needed
Anothony Green (Circa Survive/Sound of Animals Fighting) -- People say he sounds like a female, but I love the high pitch singing
Chris Cornell -- Still love his vocals..
Cedrix Bixler-Zavala (At The Drive In / Mars Volta) -- Some of the Mars uses voice effects, but still good.

There are plenty of great non-current singers:
Geoff Tate, Freddy Mercury, James Dio, Robert Plant
