Congress may call hearing on NBA scandal
/ Associated Press
Posted: 58 minutes ago

The chairman of a House subcommittee is requesting a meeting with NBA commissioner David Stern concerning the betting scandal involving former referee Tim Donaghy.
Rep. Bobby Rush, who heads the Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection, said he is also considering calling a hearing on the matter "should the facts warrant public scrutiny."

"If the allegations prove true, this could be one of the most damaging scandals in the history of American sports," the Illinois Democrat wrote in a letter sent to Stern on Wednesday and released to the press on Thursday.

Donaghy is the target of an FBI investigation for allegedly betting on games, including some he officiated, over the last two seasons. He resigned July 9.

Rush wrote that he appreciated the need for the league to conduct its own investigation and that he would like to meet with Stern at "the earliest appropriate time."

"Unfortunately, fairly or not, the NBA, more than any other professional sport, has been consistently dogged with allegations that league referees needlessly affect the outcomes of games by making bad calls," Rush wrote.

I am all for better referees. This will only help the Spurs. The fact that fans think the Spurs benefit from refs is ridiculous. The Spurs win despite the refs, not the other way around. What about the 2006 Spurs-Mavs series when Dirk set records for free throw attempts. Or the 2004 series with the Lakers?

Both Duncan and Parker should go to the line more if the refs were fair.

9-8 in 2007

That would be a neat trick seeing as how there are only 16 games. :)

Well, given that they waived their magic wand and solved all the roid issues in baseball I guess they should be able to help the NBA.

Is Zombie Terri Schiavo still around? I'd like to hear what she has to say about Congress' latest point of interest.

Maybe Stern can take along a translator and pretend he doesn't speak the language?

All the NBA has to do is study Alberto Gonzalez and nothing will happen. Ask for 'executive privilege' and voila! no crime.

"Congress may call hearing on NBA scandal... thus proving there is truth in the rhetorical 'Geeze! It's going to take an act of Congress to win this game!' often used by frustrated Memphis Grizzlies fans."

congress... :lol

In that case the investigation will take about 10 years. The only investigating done will be between campaign outings.

Hell, Congress can barely tie their own shoes. They probably wouldn't know a fixed game if it jumped up and slapped them in the face.

Got a feeling this guy is just getting out in front and gonna use this as a "no more cheating in American sports" campaign. Guess that would be as good as any other promise he could make, that he has no intention of keeping.

I'm waiting for the CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT on behalf of grieving SUN FANS.

Why does Congress have to always be involved?

Or we can look on the brighter side: Maybe CSPAN won't be so boring after all. :lol
