WASHINGTON - Chief Justice John Roberts suffered a seizure at his summer home in Maine on Monday, causing a fall that resulted in minor scrapes, Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said.

He was to remain in a hospital overnight, she said.

Roberts, 52, underwent at Penobscot Bay Medical Center a "thorough neurological evaluation, which revealed no cause for concern," Arberg said in a statement.

Roberts, named to the court by President Bush in 2005, has no known medical conditions.

NBC News reported that Roberts suffered a seizure while playing golf in January 1993. He was not allowed to drive for several months and took the bus to work, news agencies reported at the time.

The White House called the incident an "isolated, idiosyncratic seizure."

St. George Fire Chief Tim Polky said the incident happened around 2 p.m.

He said Roberts was taken from his home on Hupper Island to the mainland on a private boat; from there he was transferred to an ambulance. Polky described Roberts as "conscious and alert."

Roberts was staying at his home off Port Clyde, in the town of St. George. Port Clyde is about 90 miles by car northeast of Portland, midway up the coast of Maine.

Roberts and his wife bought their summer home last year from Steve Thomas, the former host of the "This Old House" television show, according to the Knox County Registry of Deeds. The island has 20 to 30 seasonal homes on it.

Roberts, a father of two children, is the youngest justice on a court in which the senior member, John Paul Stevens, is 87.

NBC's justice correspondent Pete Williams and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Just glad there seem to be no ill effects from his fall/seizure.

I wonder if he will sue the illegal seizure.
