Don't get too cocky about one win. I think it will be more difficult to stop the Panthers' running game than it was the Chiefs' running game. All KC has is an out of shape LJ. No wideouts or any other threats offensively. Next week they will be facing a more balanced attack, with Steve Smith being a huge offensive threat. It is going to be a test for this young defense. They need to stay humble and learn to take things one game at a time and not get a big head.

That being said, they played great today and hopefully they can be consistent throughout the season.

I'm not im just laughing that this guy says be weary of Foster, he hasnt proven any the last 3 seasons and will prob lose his starting job to D. Williams before this season is over.

HOUSTON (AP) - Mario Williams smiled broadly, clutched his football and breezed into the room.

After a year of carrying the burden of Houston's seemingly inexplicable decision to draft him, the 6-foot-7 player seemed to stand a little taller when it was time to talk about Sunday's game.
Last year's top pick finally had his breakout game, returning a fumble for a touchdown and finishing with five tackles, including two sacks to help the Houston Texans to a 20-3 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

"There's so much more," Williams said. "Not just me - as a defense. There's a lot of things we did, and a lot we could do better. Today was just a start. Hopefully, we can keep going that way."

It was Houston's first win in an opener since 2003 and is the first time in franchise history the team has won three games in a row, dating to last year.

The Texans led 10-0 when Jamar Fletcher knocked the ball out of Kris Wilson's hands and Williams recovered it. The defensive end got up and rumbled 38 yards for the touchdown. He kept the ball from that play and held onto it long after the game had ended.

Week 1 action

DeMeco Ryans jumped on Williams to congratulate him after the score. It was a change from last season, when Williams endured endless criticism in part because the Texans passed on Reggie Bush and Vince Young to get him. Kansas City challenged the ruling of a fumble, but the call was upheld.

Asked if a game like this helps take pressure off him, Williams didn't address it.

"I don't really feel like I'm under any pressure," he said. "When you look at it, the pressure applied from critics and media and whatever, I'm always behind anyway. I was drafted No. 1, but I was never really whoever else you might try to compare me to."

Williams also got a hearty laugh when someone pointed out that he has more touchdowns than Bush this year.

"I didn't think about that," Williams said. "There you go."

Matt Schaub had a successful, if a bit inconsistent, debut. He was 16-of-22 for 225 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Both of Williams' sacks came after halftime, the second a 6-yard loss on second down inside the 20 that forced the Chiefs to settle for a field goal. Justin Medlock's 27-yarder made it 17-3 in the third.

Coach Gary Kubiak said the sack "did a lot for the team" and the coaching staff expected a big game from Williams because he had his best practice as a Texans player on Thursday.

"This game is about confidence," Kubiak said. "When you're a player and a couple of good things go your way, you start to get a lot of confidence. I would expect him to feel really good coming out of this one moving forward."

Houston's effort was helped by a slew of errors by the Chiefs offense. Kansas City fumbled three times, losing two of them, missed a short field goal, and Damon Huard threw two interceptions. In addition, Chiefs receivers dropped a number of passes.

"You can't turn the ball over four times on the road and expect to have a chance," coach Herm Edwards said.

Even with Larry Johnson back on the field, the offensive problems continued after a preseason in which the Chiefs scored just two touchdowns. Johnson finished with 10 carries for 43 yards.

Huard's first interception came just before halftime when Von Hutchins drilled Jeff Webb, who tipped the ball to Dunta Robinson. First-round pick Dwayne Bowe dropped a couple of passes but had a nifty 25-yard catch that set up Kansas City's only score.

Bowe said he was a bit "jittery" before the game but a halftime pep talk from Edwards calmed him down. Huard was 22-of-33 for 168 yards.

The Texans' offense wasn't particularly impressive, considering the interception, a fumble by the normally steady Andre Johnson and more of the protection problems which have plagued the team. Schaub was sacked two times and hurried plenty more. He was impressive in flashes though.

Schaub found Andre Johnson up the middle for a 77-yard touchdown reception that was the longest of Johnson's career and made it 10-0 midway through the second quarter. Johnson, who had seven catches for 142 yards, tiptoed out of an arm tackle by a diving Bernard Pollard and jogged into the end zone.

The backup to Michael Vick for three years in Atlanta, Schaub also avoided the rush to find rookie Jacoby Jones for a 26 yard gain in the first quarter. He engineered a nice drive after Medlock missed a 30-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter, but the Texans came away empty-handed when Jarrad Page intercepted an ill-advised throw into the end zone.

Eddie Drummond fumbled a punt which Houston's Charlie Anderson recovered in the second quarter and the Texans cashed in with a 26-yard field goal by Kris Brown to make it 3-0.

Houston SS Jason Simmons left the game with a torn left patellar tendon and is out for the season. ... Texans DE N.D. Kalu cracked bones in his hand and returned to the game after getting a cast put on it in the fourth quarter.

I have to admit that they were much better than I thought they would be.

Congrats to the Texans and their fans.

However, I'll reserve judgement until I see them play against a real offense. Next week vs. The Panthers will be a good test of how really good they are.

I'm a Texans fan checking in. Didn't get to see the game yesterday, though, since my tv won't get hooked up until next week.

Reggie Bush overrated? I'd take him on my team anyday. But Mario was in a tough spot last season when the Texans passed up Reggie. It takes longer to see what Mario's effect on a team could be. He has this year to prove it, hopefully.

I actually think the Texans might win this game. Might. I don't think we really know the identity of Carolina yet. The final score between the panthers and rams was not indicative of how the game went. Going into the half, the Rams were up by 3. St. Louis loses 2 of its starters on the offensive line, Jackson fumbles on consecutive series and the game changed from there. Jake only passed for 201 yards against a Rams D that is not that great. If I had to pick an "upset", this might be it.

ACTUALLY Casserly was nearing the end of what he was doing for us..what pisses me Off is THAT we knew he was leaving 2 years before he did. WE continued to let him draft for us and paid the price for it. Dunta and Ryans were the only 2 good things he got for us. I guess he was defensive minded. Yeah I would have loved to have VY and we could have traded carr and maybe D. Williams (or whatever his last name is now)before cutting them both. Mario however im glad we got over Reggie. I just am not sold on Bush being a feature back. Yeah he is quick in the open field but cuts too much in the backfield and can't pound the ball. He will only be good with the way the saints use him.

As a Texan fan the passing on Bush was a mistake yes.

Vince Young?

Thats to be determined, but, I have no problem with their direction.

David Carr IMO is a good QB. Hes never had an HONEST shot.

Anyone that tells me, Carr had an honest shot and an honest chance at winning with the Texans may not be a liar, but they aren't being totally honest with the situation.

Carr did have a fair shot, is schaub the answer? Only time will tell!! He does seem quicker and smarter in the pocket. Looking for a playoff sleeper? Try Houston
By Greg Cosell - SportingNews

Greg Cosell
SportingNews.com

Come December, Houston will be in the playoff conversation.

That conversation begins with coach Gary Kubiak and the offensive philosophy he brought from Denver after spending 11 years as Mike Shanahan's offensive coordinator. The foundation is a strong running game, but it must be complemented by explosive plays in the passing game. And Kubiak, like Shanahan, is adept at producing big pass plays with formations that scream "run."

A great example is the 77-yard touchdown pass from Matt Schaub to Andre Johnson in Week 1. It came out of a two-back, two-tight end package on first down; Johnson was the only wide receiver on the field. The Texans had running personnel in a running formation. The Chiefs' defense responded accordingly, and Johnson got behind the secondary for the touchdown. That's smart game-planning.

Schaub is impressive. He understands the timing and rhythm of the passing game, makes quick, smart decisions and is accurate. He also gets the ball out quickly to the right receiver, which will make the Texans' line, long ridiculed for its inability to protect David Carr, a better unit. You won't find the Texans near the bottom of the NFL rankings in sacks allowed anymore.

The line has showed signs of being solid overall, and Ahman Green's skills have not deteriorated. He remains a strong downhill runner who attacks the line of scrimmage and keeps the offense out of long-yardage situations. The Texans now can finish games by pounding the ball on the ground, a critical component to playoff contention.

On defense, Houston starts three former first-round picks up front -- end Mario Williams and tackles Amobi Okoye and Travis Johnson -- and is demonstrating consistent improvement against the run. Williams, vilified a year ago because he wasn't Reggie Bush, will never be a quickness-and-speed pass rusher, but he is showing signs of playing with power and leverage.

Dunta Robinson, another former first-round pick, is ready to emerge as an elite corner. He's physically tough, confident and has a short memory, a must for the position. Each time I study Houston on film, Robinson flashes. And there's DeMeco Ryans, one of the few middle linebackers who never comes off the field.

The Texans remain a work in progress, but the foundation is there. Don't be surprised when they are playing meaningful games in December.

Greg Cosell of NFL Films analyzes coaching tape and is executive producer of State Farm NFL Matchup.

?? Vince led his team, a team that had started 0-4 and looked horrible before he played, to a winning record with him as the QB. He has then come into this season an has led his team to a win over a team many considered superior in the Jaguars and then followed that up by leading his team to a 1st down or two within beating the defending champs. If his receiver doesn't get the critical drop on 3rd and 4 the Titans would most likely be 2-0 and the Colts 1-1. He may not have the best stats, but the guy leads to wins. After all, isn't winning the entire point to playing football?

At this point you have to say he's the best player from that draft, but the NFL Draft is such a crapshoot and I don't think you can say with certainty that the Texans made a mistake until next year or later.

And recall that last year before the draft, Reggie Bush was the no-brainer #1. Vince was only discussed in passing, and it usually involved where he would be picked relative to Leinert. I don't remember any serious discussions about Young going #1 until later in the season when his good start (and the final confirmation that Carr sucked) lead people to believe the Texans made a mistake in not drafting Young. Until that point, the mistake was not drafting Bush.

Anyway, I don't mean to imply Vince Young is a disappointment. I just think the NFL Draft is such a crapshoot sometimes that it takes an incredibly special player to be able to say ANY team, regardless of need, should take that player with the number one overall pick. And again, in May, 2006... that player was Bush, not Young.

Then there is the issue of whether or not the Texans made a mistake in passing on Vince, considering that they were able to pick up Schaub and that Williams is looking rather solid this season playing injury free. I'd say Williams + Schaub could very well end up being a better scenario for the team than Vince + two 2nd round picks.

So either the Texans take a good shot at having a solid defense and offense with Schaub/Williams or pin all of their hopes on VY bailing them out week after week. The answer to the question of what is preferable is not clear as of now.

Or you could have a little less mobile QB who still makes good decisions and can get the ball downfield while you invested that #1 in your D line.

Again, I don't see VY as being the preferable choice for the Texans now that they were able to land a solid starting QB.

The way it was a horrible decision is if you name your team the "Texans" so you can angle for a statewide following and then pass on a chance to draft the most popular QB in Central Texas history.

To explain Texans' 2-0 record, start with talent level
By KRISTIE RIEKEN, AP Sports Writer
September 19, 2007

HOUSTON (AP) -- There's a simple reason why the Houston Texans are finally winning after five years of futility.

"We have better players," cornerback Dunta Robinson said. "That's got a lot to do with it."

There's certainly more to Houston's 2-0 start than that, but Robinson hit on a key difference in this year's Texans: They have more talent than ever before.

The Texans feel like they upgraded at quarterback with the addition of Matt Schaub and signed four-time Pro Bowler Ahman Green. Houston's defense is more talented with rookie defensive tackle Amobi Okoye and linebacker Danny Clark.

The development of that group has been helped by the improvement of last year's top overall pick Mario Williams and the continued strong play of 2006 Defensive Rookie of the Year DeMeco Ryans.

There's also a new attitude around Houston that Robinson said comes from second year coach Gary Kubiak.

"Kubiak, he's just so excited and it makes us excited to play and he believes in us," said Robinson, a first-round draft pick in 2004. "His confidence is really high and he believes in us and it makes us go out there and be confident."

Kubiak, the longtime Denver offensive coordinator, took over in Houston after the team posted a franchise-worst 2-14 record in 2005. Under his leadership, the Texans, who have never had a winning record, tripled their win total last season. They've won their last four games, dating back to last season.

Andre Johnson said he thinks the mind-set of the team began to change after last year's 27-24 Christmas Eve win over the Colts. He said the team had a newfound confidence after that game and has used that momentum to start strong this season.

"Guys expect more from each other," Johnson said. "Guys demand more from each other. Guys want to win. So when you have all those things, guys don't want to be in the same situation we were in the past. Guys want change. When you have that, guys are doing whatever they have to do to win games."

Another catalyst for the upswing in Houston has been the leadership of Schaub, the former backup to Michael Vick who had started just two games before this season. He's completed 72 percent of his passes and has already thrown three touchdowns.

The Texans credited their ability to rebound from a 14-point deficit for the win over Carolina to Schaub's poise.

"He's been great," Johnson said. "We were down 14-0 and we didn't panic and I think a lot of that comes from our quarterback. He's our leader and to see him out there not panicking ... and it rubs off on everybody else."

The Texans have also been aided by the improvement of the offensive line where the only change this season is moving Steve McKinney to center in place of Mike Flanagan. The group was named the team's offensive players of the week for not allowing a sack against Carolina.

The group has been helped by Schaub's ability to avoid the rush and get rid of the ball quickly. But for a unit that allowed David Carr to be sacked 249 times in five seasons, allowing two sacks through two games is a positive sign.

Kubiak couldn't point to one reason for his team's early success, but rather the effort of the group.

"I just think our football team's playing well together," he said. "Everybody's playing hard, everybody's pitching in, being very unselfish and that's the way we have to play to be successful."

Sprained knee sidelines Andre Johnson for Sunday

HOUSTON -- Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson ruled out playing against Indianapolis this week as he recovers from a knee sprain.

Andre Johnson

Johnson

Asked Wednesday if there was any chance he could play against the Colts, Johnson said: "No. I mean as it looks right now, you look at me right now, no I wouldn't be out there on Sunday."

The news is a major blow to a team that is 2-0 for the first time in franchise history and preparing to face a major AFC South foe. Rookie Jacoby Jones, who has two catches for 33 yards, will probably start in Johnson's place. Second receiver Kevin Walter has just two receptions for 17 yards.

Johnson, who wore a large brace on his injured left knee Wednesday, said he is unsure of when he can return but didn't rule out next week's game.

"I'm taking it day-by-day, week-by-week, and doing everything I can to strengthen my leg so I can be back," he said.

An MRI Monday revealed no damage that would require surgery. Coach Gary Kubiak listed Johnson's official status for Sunday as doubtful.

Johnson sprained his knee during the fourth quarter of the Texans 34-21 win over the Panthers on Sunday. He fell awkwardly on the knee after a 10-yard reception and remained on the turf for several minutes. He walked off the field on his own but was limping on the sideline.

Johnson, who has missed just three games in his five-year career, said being on the sidelines Sunday will be difficult.

"I'll probably be the team's biggest cheerleader," he said. "I'm going to go out and encourage these guys as much as I can."

Johnson had seven catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns Sunday. His 262 yards receiving in the first two games rank fourth in the NFL.

My opinion of San Diego is tainted by their 1-2 start and loss to Green Bay yesterday. But even while San Diego is trying to find out how to win again, two of the Pats three wins are against the Jets and Bills. Usually I am going to pick a decent team to upset the Pats just because I hate the Pats, but I'd never put money on any AFC East division game, especially this year, because the Pats are on a completely different level than the rest of the shit teams in the AFC East.

Yeah hopefully we wont need much to be Atlanta this coming week, then Miami the next. I think we will be fine. Andre Davis proved himself as well this week. 4 catches for 70 yards. One thing that really impressed me was our redzone defense. We help them to field goals a lot on multiple occasions.

if that tells the entire story then i'd agree, but you've got to take more than that into account dumbass.

The Colts defense only looked good when Schaub threw it right to them or the playcalling was so atrocious that a JV high school team could have busted the play. Overall they looked pretty average and at times flat out bad.

And let's not forget that last week they were a dropped pass away from losing to Vince Young and 10 retards.

Watching that game didn't tell me a fuckin thing about Houston. Maybe they are significantly better than last season, but by the way Indy played, I can't say. So they looked bad when Shaub connected with his receivers? Using that rationale, everytime Shaub connects with a receiver, that defense is automatically suspect. But, if he throws towards a defense, they actually look good.

This logic is unparalleled.

And let's not forget that last week they were a dropped pass away from losing to Vince Young and 10 retards.

The lost SEVERAL starters from last years football team and are 3-0. They've done it with a balanced effort from offense and defense (with the defense bailing them out from a couple of bad situations). What else do you want?

The Colts defense is playing better than they did during the regular season last year. Not as lights out as they were in the playoffs, but still pretty damn good, and the offense is having some hiccups when it comes to finding the end zone. Harrison has dropped some TD passes and we had to settle for FGs. And you want to sit here and tell me this Colts team is weaker than last year when you know Peyton Manning is probably slitting his wrists over throwing only 1 TD per game since the opener. Dude is going to be looking to expose some overrated CB for TDs and he'll probably do that against Dre Bly next week.

The Texans lost several key players to injury against the Indianapolis Colts. Head coach Gary Kubiak announced the extent of their injuries and their likely replacements on Monday.

McKinney out for season: With word of Cedric Killings' steady recovery, the biggest news of the day was that starting center Steve McKinney tore the ACL in his left knee and is out for the season. McKinney, who has played in every game in Texans history, was named the starter after an offseason-long position battle with Mike Flanagan, a Pro Bowler in 2003 with the Green Bay Packers who now steps back into the starting role he held for nine games last season.

“That’s why Mike’s here,” Kubiak said. “For us to keep two veteran centers on our roster was for this very reason. Now did we think Steve was going to be lost to a season-ending injury? No. But history told us that we would need them both to get through this season.

“Mike’s been preparing to play. He’s a veteran center; he knows what we’re doing. And then we’ve got Chris White, a young kid that y’all know we all think a lot of, so his process will get elevated and those two will work, but Mike’s ready to go.”

Still, several players were stung by the loss of their teammate.

“Steve and I have been together for six years now, so we’re not just teammates, we’re friends,” guard Chester Pitts said. “Obviously, it’s rough and it’s not what you want, but we all know it’s part of the game. It’s just how it works out sometimes.”

“It’s definitely tough,” quarterback Matt Schaub said. “Any time you lose a player, especially for the season, it’s a tough blow because he’s been a big part of what we’ve been able to do here so far this season. He’s a good blocker in the pass and in the run, so he’ll be missed. But Mike Flanagan can step in and get the job done as well.”

Green day-to-day: Running back Ahman Green is considered day-to-day after an MRI revealed no damage to his bruised left knee, injured on a hard hit in the season opener against Kansas City. Green did not return to the Colts game after struggling with the injury on the Texans’ first series.

Running back Ron Dayne looks good for the Atlanta game after sitting out Week 3 with a sore chest.

“As of today, I’d like to think that Ronnie is going to be fine and ready to go, so that would be a big positive,” Kubiak said.

If Green cannot play on Sunday, Samkon Gado will again help replace him along with fullback Jameel Cook, who turned in an admirable performance at halfback on Sunday with five carries for 15 yards and two receptions for 12 yards.

“I would say he played well,” Kubiak said of Cook. “He’s a hybrid type of guy. He plays for us in the nickel, he’s good in pass protection. I was pleased with the way he played and I think he would come back this week and play even better with more reps.”

Jones out, Davis may start: With Andre Johnson still wearing an immobilizer on his left knee and rookie Jacoby Jones out with a separated shoulder, Andre' Davis may start at wide receiver against Atlanta after racking up 70 yards on four receptions against the Colts.

“I think that’s a very good possibility,” Kubiak said. “He showed that he’s played before. He went in there and he was very effective, made big plays. He’s got some speed. He has not been up because of the special teams; that’s not a factor with him right now with our receiver situation, he’s going to be up. So I think you’re definitely going to see him more. Does he start this week? We’ll see. We’ll see how this week goes.”

Johnson will probably come out of the immobilizer within the next two days, at which point the star receiver will be evaluated on a daily basis.

“I would think he’s still doubtful as we go into this week,” Kubiak said. “As far as Jacoby, it’s going to be a week-to-week thing. We’re hoping that it’s a two-week process with him, but that’s going to be a week-to-week deal.”

The Texans are in need of another receiver with Jerome Mathis the only other healthy wideout on the roster. Kubiak said they are considering activating Harry Williams from the practice squad or re-signing Bethel Johnson, Keenan McCardell or David Anderson, all who were with the Texans through training camp and have a grasp of the offense.

Punt returning trio: Dexter Wynn and Mathis are likely to replace Jones at punt returner, while Jamar Fletcher may also get the opportunity.

“I would think they’ll both do it,” Kubiak said of Wynn and Mathis. “I would think Dexter would start doing it, but Jerome definitely has the ability to do that. We can also do it with Fletcher, too. We think he would do a very good job for us.”

Jones, who says he never missed a game or practice while at Lane College, isn’t happy about his injury.

“It’s a big disappointment because I still want to play,” he said. “I don’t want to miss games. I’m not used to missing games and practice, so it’s something I’ve got to deal with.”

Part of the game: Kubiak noted a silver lining as he discussed moving on from the injuries.

“It’s a very tough situation, but it is what it is and we’ve got to push through it,” Kubiak said. ““Everybody in this league loses players. We’ve lost a few, we’ve had more than our share right now, but we’re going to find a way to fight through it and we’re going to be better when it’s all said and done. These young kids are going to grow up and play well for us.”

His players have gotten the message and are looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“It’s just the nature of the business, and I think that’s what makes a great team is if you have guys who can step up and play like starters,” defensive end N.D. Kalu said. “And we’ll see in Atlanta because we can’t use an excuse, so we’ll see what type of team we really are. This is a great chance for us to prove that we’re a good team, not just a good starting 22.

Shit injuries are fucking us. I hope Flannigan can hold up, or we are gonna have to throw studdard in there. If we can win this week while resting Dre I think we are in a good position to make a good run at the playoffs.

Okoye named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month

Texans defensive tackle Amobi Okoye was named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month for September, it was announced today. Okoye becomes the second Texans rookie to win the award and is the fourth Texan to win player of the month honors.

Okoye (6-2, 302) has started all four games for the Texans this season, recording 10 tackles, an AFC-high 4.0 sacks for 30.0 yards, a team-high four quarterback pressures, and he tied for the team lead with one forced fumble. He also has been solid against the run, helping the Texans to the sixth-ranked run defense in the NFL.

Okoye recorded his first two sacks of the season and set the Texans rookie record for most sacks in a game at Carolina (9/16). He tied the Texans' rookie record by recording a sack in three consecutive games. Okoye’s 4.0 sacks in the month of September were the most by a rookie defensive tackle since Vikings defensive tackle Kevin Williams had 5.0 in December 2003.

Okoye’s 4.0 sacks leads all rookies, is tied for tops in the AFC, and is second among all defensive tackles. With Okoye at defensive tackle, the Texans ended the month of September ranked 14th in total defense, their highest ranking in the first month of the season in team history.

Okoye joins punter Chad Stanley, cornerback Marcus Coleman and linebacker DeMeco Ryans as the other Texans to win NFL Player of the Month Awards. Stanley won the AFC Special Teams Award in September 2002, Coleman picked up the AFC Defensive Award in 2003 and Ryans was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month in December 2006.

He's well on his way to be DROY. Now if they can just win some more games.
