What year is this supposed to be?

Edit:

:nope

I looked at Phoenix's roster for 74 through 80 and no William/Bill Sadler was on there. I found one instance of a draft of a Bill Sadler in 1983 to Dallas, from Pepperdine University.

Dick was number 5, I believe. I have to figure who this is now..

I'd ask JMark.

DVD was #5, but he DOES look a lot like Colonel Stuart in the pic above:

"Oh Maravich, Pete Maravich. The Pistol who averaged 44 points per game at LSU. I read about you in Sport Magazine. You seemed a bit out of your league on ABC's Wide World of Sports, I thought."

It's a joke people. The guy in the picture is merely a doppelganger for Colonel Stuart.

Perhaps Don Buse? He played 1977-1980. He wore the number ten.

On the front of the jersey, there looks to be a 1. On the back, I believe there is an 'E' at the end of the jersey.

I'd ask dumb_suns_fan or yourcheatinheart, but they only started following the Suns when Nash signed there as a FA. They couldn't pick Barkley or Kevin Johnson out of a lineup

Arsdale wasn't on the 79-80 team. It has to be someone on the 79-80 team because according to basketball-reference.com, Maravich was only on the Jazz for 17 games of the 79-80 season.

Don Buse was a 6-4 guard who wore #10.

Looks like him, though not exact, and it appears he's got an "E" on the back of his jersey and is wearing a double-digit number beginning with "1"...

Pete is #7 in this pic, he also wore #44 for NOLA. That could narrow down the year it was taken.

When did Pete wear #7 and when did he wear #44? Why the switch? He wore 44 in Atlanta.

..but Pete played with the New Orleans Jazz, same number. 1974-1979

When the Jazz moved to Utah, they added the word "Utah" on top of the Jazz wordmark. Utah is not present in the pic above:

It's obviously post knee injury (in 1977-78), so it's later on in his Jazz career. I figured the 79-80 Utah team because of the contraption on his leg, and because it was a year Buse fit.

EDIT: OK, so we've determined that it's post knee-injury (1977-78), but prior to the Jazz moving to Utah in 1979-80 (good catch, Findog), so my guess is the picture was taken in the 78-79 season (he played 49 games), wherewith Buse still fits, as he was with the Suns from 77-78 through 79-80.

Ok.. confusing looking at pics and determining years..

http://www.nba.com/history/uniforms_jazz.html

1979 their road Jersey was green, and it states that only their home jersey's had Utah above the Jazz logo. So, it's definitely not 1979. As JMark says, most likely 1977-1978

http://espn.go.com/classic/biography/s/Maravich_Pete.html

Knee injuries and a bacterial infection marked Maravich's 1977-78 season, when he averaged 27 points but missed 32 games. He was sidelined for 33 games the following year, but, wearing a knee brace, he lacked his old agility though he averaged 22.6.

So, 1978-1979 ?

JMarkJohns
08-02-2007, 02:12 PM
Yeah. That article you found confirms. 1978-79, the year prior to Utah.

I still say that is Buse. Regardless of the year. He looks like him, and fits the little that we've concluded about him and the picture, save for the Jewfro... Which could be cut, then flattened by sweat.

Sweet detective work, fellas. But there was an easier way.

If you look carefully, the guy sitting in section 101, seat 16 (the one with the mustache) is Al Rosenweig. From 1976 to 1978 he split Sun season tickets at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum with his co-worker and neighbor Stanley Thornton. Since Stanley was originally from Louisiana, he would always go to the Jazz games to see Maravich. However, in the summer of 1978 Stanley was a victim of a bizarre cement pouring accident. Thus the fact that Al is in that seat means that it must be no earlier than the 78-79 season.

78-79 Suns: Paul Westphal, Walter Davis, Alvan Adams, Don Buse, Mike Bratz, Alvin Scott, Joel Kramer, Ron Lee, Truck Robinson, Gar Heard, Bayard Forrest, Marty Byrnes, Ted McClain

I think we can safely rule out Westphal, Davis, Adams, Robinson and Heard. So that leaves the rest.

Since we've confirmed it's from 78-79 and it's Buse, here's more research: the picture was either taken on November 12, 1978, a 128-122 win by the Suns, or February 17, 1979, a 136-112 win by Phoenix.
