Barry Bonds hits No. 756 to break Hank Aaron's all-time home run record

By JANIE McCAULEY, AP Sports Writer
August 7, 2007

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Barry Bonds hit No. 756 over the right-center field wall Tuesday night, and hammered home the point: Like him or not, legitimate or not, he is baseball's new home run king.

Bonds broke Hank Aaron's storied record in the fifth inning, connecting on a 3-2 pitch from Washington's Mike Bacsik. Three days earlier, Bonds tied the Hammer with a shot to left-center in San Diego.

Conspicuous by their absence were the commissioner and Aaron himself.

Bud Selig was on hand for the tiebreaking homer, deciding to put baseball history ahead of the steroid allegations that have plagued the San Francisco Giants slugger. On this night, he sent an emissary, Major League Baseball executive vice president Jimmie Lee Solomon.

As for Aaron, he said all along he had no interest in being there whenever and wherever his 33-year-old mark was broken. He was true to his word, but he did offer a taped message of congratulations.

Absent, too, were the fans who held up asterisk signs, sure that Bonds wasn't the real deal and that his power came from steroids.

Bonds didn't face such suspicions at AT&T Park, in front of a loyal, home crowd that included his godfather, Hall of Famer Willie Mays. Bonds has always denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs.

Yet even with Bonds at the top of the chart, fans will surely keep debating which slugger they consider the true home run champion. Some will continue to cling to Aaron while other, older rooters will always say it's Babe Ruth.

"It's all about history. Pretty soon, someone will come along and pass him," Mays said before the game.

A seven-time NL MVP, the 43-year-old Bonds hit his 22nd home run of the year. Bonds broke Mark McGwire's single-season record by hitting 73 in 2001 and while he's no longer such a force, opposing pitchers remain wary.

Bonds and Giants management bickered in the offseason over contract issues. This big night was the main reason owner Peter Magowan brought back the star left fielder for a 15th season in San Francisco, signing him to a $15.8 million, one-year contract.

Bonds' once-rapid quest for the record had slowed in recent years as his age and balky knees diminished his pace. He hit 258 home runs from 2000-04, but has only 53 since then.

While steroids have tinged Bonds' pursuit, it was race that was the predominant issue when Aaron broke Ruth's mark in 1974. Aaron dealt with hate mail and death threats from racist fans who thought a black man was not worthy of breaking the record set by a white hero, the beloved Babe.

Former commissioner Bowie Kuhn watched Aaron tie the record but was not present for the record-breaker, a slight that bothered many fans of Aaron. Selig is a close friend of Aaron's and offered Bonds tepid congratulations when he tied the record.

"I think Hank is his own man," Mays said. "I think if he wanted to be here he would be here."

"When he hit 715, the commissioner wasn't there," he said. "You may not blame him because he wasn't represented the right way."

Bonds was destined for stardom at an early age. The son of All-Star outfielder Bobby Bonds and the godson of one of the game's greatest players, Bonds spent his childhood years roaming the clubhouse at Candlestick Park, getting tips from Mays and other Giants.

"I visualized him playing sports at a high level. He was 5 when he was in my locker all the time," Mays said.

In a matter of years, Bonds went from a wiry leadoff hitter with Pittsburgh in 1986 to a bulked-up slugger. That transformation is at the heart of his many doubters, who believe Bonds cheated to accomplish his feats and should not be considered the record-holder.

There are plenty of fans already hoping for the day that Bonds' total -- whatever it ends up -- is topped. Rodriguez may have the best chance, with his 500 home runs at age 32 far ahead of Bonds' pace.

well, he's been chemically enhanced.

but who cares if he's hitting .300? with an OBP damn near .500 and a slugging above .600, he's - somehow quietly - still one of the best offensive players in the game.

now, he hasn't done it ethically and he's a bad teammate (both intentionally and unintentionally), but you can't dismiss his numbers on their face.

All of the hate towards Bonds is a little ridiculous, since ALL PLAYERS in ALL PROFESSIONAL SPORTS are right now under a cloud of doubt. Everyone wants A-Rod to break the record, but many experts on steroid use think that he is also a juicer. The Latin American ballplayers lead the pack in juicing, since steroids and HGH are not even illegal, and readily available in their home countries. People have been saying this for YEARS, yet somehow A-Rod is the second coming of Purity.

The scandals in cycling have shown that drug use is NOT an isolated, one athlete at a time thing. It is universal, coordinated and sanctioned. Promising athletes start juicing in HIGH SCHOOL. When a prospet moves from college to the pros, analysts say "he will be ready for the pros after he bulks up a little." What the mean is "he needs a couple of months with a trainer and the JUICE."

NBA fans are suprisingly naive when it comes to performance enhancing drugs. I've heard many say that it doen't exist in the NBA, and it wouldn't help a basketball player. As if basketball has nothing to do with strength, quickness, endurance and the ability to recover from injuries quickly.

Thank God its over.

Lets all hope ARod doesnt have some injury that prevents him from (inevitably) breaking this damn record.

I'm almost positive A-Rod is using HGH. Look at him now compared to when he was 24 or 25 (about the time people stop growing), and he's not only getting bigger but is also getting that pronounced brow and big head. Since there is no blood test and only a blood test will detect HGH, who knows how many people are using it right now. Get used to drug enhanced sports from now on, because this cat isn't going back into the bag. All sports are using, and there are still so many enhancers undetectable by current league tests that people are using.

That said, I applaud Bonds as the new HR King and if A-Rod gets there I'll applaud him too.

08-08-2007, 02:34 PM
That's the thing I hate about baseball is how stats driven the sport is. I can't imagine an NFL team sabotaging their season to let some QB get the all time TD record, or an NBA team doing the same to promote a new all time points leader. At this point, the run to the championship in baseball is a far, far second from who is leading what category. It's stupid.

SAtown
08-08-2007, 03:48 PM
It isn't over yet. Just like they rubbed 756 in our faces for months and months, they'll do the same for every Bonds HR from now on.

Ignoring that it's indeed part of this story wouldn't be responsible journalism.
Meh, I don't quite equate a decision to refrain from placing an asterisk instead of an O on Bond's uniform or writing "756" in syringes as ignoring the debate, nor do I see it as a genuine attempt to open dialogue on the issue. The SI.com headline doesn't even offer an explanation/caption under the pic regarding the asterisk.

I don't see it any different from the "Spurs Advance*" piece that ran a couple of months ago. Before even reading the article you already knew they were coming with a bias.

barbacoataco
08-08-2007, 05:10 PM
The question is not whether Bonds used steroids and HGH. The question is whether this is "cheating" when most other players are also doing it.

If baseball really was trying to catch users, there would be positive tests every week. When the cycling organizations decided to really try to test riders, there were positives everywhere. They started testing riders in the off-season, when they are training, and at surprise moments. They also test for all kinds of drugs that the MLB, NFL, and NBA do not test for.

For those of you who say "so-and-so has never tested positive," remember that pro wrestling supposedly tests for steroids, and has almost no positives.
