Texas congregation acted out of principle, not malice, pastor says

ARLINGTON, Texas - A megachurch canceled a memorial service for a Navy veteran 24 hours before it was to start because the deceased was gay.

Officials at the nondenominational High Point Church knew that Cecil Howard Sinclair was gay when they offered to host his service, said his sister, Kathleen Wright. But after his obituary listed his life partner as one of his survivors, she said, it was called off.

“It’s a slap in the face. It’s like, ’Oh, we’re sorry he died, but he’s gay so we can’t help you,”’ she said Friday.

Wright said High Point offered to hold the service for Sinclair because their brother is a janitor there. Sinclair, who served in the first Gulf War, died Monday at age 46 from an infection after surgery to prepare him for a heart transplant.

The church’s pastor, the Rev. Gary Simons, said no one knew Sinclair, who was not a church member, was gay until the day before the Thursday service, when staff members putting together his video tribute saw pictures of men “engaging in clear affection, kissing and embracing.”

‘It’s not that we didn’t love the family’
Simons said the church believes homosexuality is a sin, and it would have appeared to endorse that lifestyle if the service had been held there.

“We did decline to host the service — not based on hatred, not based on discrimination, but based on principle,” Simons told The Associated Press. “Had we known it on the day they first spoke about it — yes, we would have declined then. It’s not that we didn’t love the family.”

Simons said the decision had nothing to do with the obituary. He said the church offered to pay for another site for the service, made the video and provided food for more than 100 relatives and friends.

“Even though we could not condone that lifestyle, we went above and beyond for the family through many acts of love and kindness,” Simons said.

Wright called the church’s claim about the pictures “a bold-faced lie.” She said she provided numerous family pictures of Sinclair, including some with his partner, but said none showed men kissing or hugging.

The 5,000-member High Point Church was founded in 2000 by Simons and his wife, April, whose brother is Joel Osteen, well-known pastor of the 38,000-member Lakewood Church in Houston. Now High Point meets in a 432,000-square-foot facility in Arlington, near Dallas.

Wright said relatives declined the church’s offer to hold the service at a community center because they felt it was an inappropriate venue. It ultimately was held at a funeral home, but the cancellation still lingered in some minds, she said.

Is this how we treat our veterans? Where can I enlist?

This raises the question, is God going to punish the deceased for loving, or them for hating?

If his lifestyle was so wrong and they were so adamant about that why even pay for the services elsewhere? If it a sin in the eyes of god then they basically condoned it by offering to pay for it. Does this seem the least bit hypocritical to anyone here?

On top of that he was vet who volunteered to serve his country, that alone should make that church look really bad IMO. You know there will be those who think this church can do no wrong. I would love to see if numbers of the congregation's attendance go up or down after this.

Cannot deny the churches right to exercise freedom of association now, can we?

No, the church can do whatever they want. It's just sad that they only support veterans if they're straight. Sinclair's service and sacrifice was no less just because he was gay.

I bet if a veteran died and the church found out he had a mistress and two illegitimate children they would still agree to do his funeral.

I really doubt that, at least not if the same type of video was being presented.

Did you consider the complete article? Consider this part:

The church’s pastor, the Rev. Gary Simons, said no one knew Sinclair, who was not a church member, was gay until the day before the Thursday service, when staff members putting together his video tribute saw pictures of men “engaging in clear affection, kissing and embracing.”

When a church organizes such an event, there will be regular church members present, with their families. I'll bet most church members want to see two men kissing. Then to bring their children... that would be taboo to them.

Your assumption I would say is correct if the mistress and/or illegitimate children would be there, or in a tribute video, or something similar.

Besides. He was not a church member anyway. He just worked for the church.

Why do you bring such idiotic poison into a thread?

Oh I get it.... You fantasize about 12 year old boys, don't you?

What a very 'PC thing to do. I wonder if those on this board who hate that we are so PC will be outraged over this....... After thinking about they probably will not be because the dude was gay.

I smell bullshit. Sinclair's sister said no such tape existed.

Wright called the church’s claim about the pictures “a bold-faced lie.” She said she provided numerous family pictures of Sinclair, including some with his partner, but said none showed men kissing or hugging.

The Church found out he was gay from the obituary that was published and decided to bolt.

But after his obituary listed his life partner as one of his survivors, she said, it was called off.

The fact is the moment they found out he was gay the service was not going to happen. PERIOD. By adding a little white lie of gay PDA they could strengthen their rationale in the minds of other homophobes.

Think about it from the sister's POV. What possibly good reason could she have to put pictures of gay people making out for a church sponsored funeral? Don't you think she was wary of it? Makes no sense to flaunt her brother's gay relationship in the face of those she knows are against that lifestyle, especially when they're footing the bill.

This church is not too far away from me, and they send teenagers out all the time on Saturday mornings to bang on doors in my neighborhood on 'missions' and 'testimonials'. And kill trees with fancy, shiny flyers. I just checked with the old lady and this was the outfit that said their church cures breast cancer. Hey, believe what you want, but this place ain't for us. They're aggressive, and this is great publicity for soliciting more gay-bashing religious type people looking for a new church.

What this article fails to mention is that the largest gay Christian-flavored church in the world is in Dallas, right next to Love Field. It's big, too. We went to a very amusing, colorful wedding there last summer.

If High Point only wants to bury straight white men with their name on the dead guy's inheritance list, that's their right. I am sort of looking forward to the next time the powers that be over there want to come solicit my neighborhood, though. Maybe the supervisor will get out of his air conditioned SUV and sweat with the kids defending his churches honor.

Wow... you really are interested in the young ones... they all look young to you! That is a picture of me sliding down a natural waterslide. I assure you I am well past the age of consent in that photo. I sure hope I don’t remind you of a conquest.

"The Church" does not mean all churches now, does it? If you really believe that, you are worse off than I thought. I think in the case of the catholic churches, all who knew of the perversion and kept it quiet should be executed. I have no tolerance what so ever for child molesters, and those who protect them. If I ever catch one in action, he is dead!
sometimes the truth is poisonous.Yes, but what you imply has had not connection to this case. It if you poisoning this thread.
