I am now picking Mir, I was thinking about this over the weekend when I saw some old UFC footage.

I am just dissapointed in Mir. He is such a paper tiger. I don't buy into his leg being his problem from that motorcycle accident. I think its where his head and desire is at.

I edited my pics.

Well, I was trying to see if someone would verify this. I only read something to make me infer that he might be:

Neither guy said anything bad about each other, which certainly doesn't fit the typical profile of pre-fight talk. Couture, the heavyweight champion, did talk a bit about steroids, but he insisted that performance-enhancing drugs are not a problem for UFC.

Bodog finally put up odds for the full card, so I placed my bets. I'm leaning heavily on Grove and Leites, who I think are absolute locks. I ended up going with Randy only because he's a slight underdog...I think the fight is a pick'em, so I didn't like Gonzaga's line. I'm surprised Mir is favored against anybody, even Hardonk who just lost to MulletCully...Hardonk by KO/TKO. I see value in Aurelio because most in the US don't know who he is...he should be favored IMO. I think Babalu is done...probably a boring decision for Heath. I think GSP will return to form and handle Koscheck in a great fight. Pellegrino and Crane are my longer shot underdogs...I see some value in their odds as both are relatively unknown to most fans.

Thales Leites -220
Ryan Jensen +180
Pick: Leites - Risk $35.00 to win $15.91

I don't think you'll recoup your original bets. I think you had 128 in wagers, but after the bets and returns, i'm saying you'll have about 80. That's my prediction. :)

Honestly, if you believe that underdogs are locks, then you should wager more money on them to gain a higher return, rather than bet small wagers on a clear favorite with a wagerline that low.

I guess we'll see...

I didn't bet any underdogs as "locks"...I only bet on 4 underdogs (Couture basically even). Hardonk is the only one I feel strongly about. Small bet, small risk, but decent return if they hit. Most of the time I bet on an UD it's because I see good value in the bet...ie, they shouldn't be as big of a dog as they are.

It's funny because I think Hardonk is your worst bet, but we will see. I would wager on Grove (and he's my pick) as well, but something tells me Cote could pull this one out with a nice KO. Once it's down though, Cote FTL.

That explains why they keep breaking PPV records and they just signed a 100 million dollar TV deal and one more on the way with HBO.

You base novelty on one casual fan making a comment.

Good thinking skills.
what PPV records have they broken lately? 100million dollar TV deal isn't that big in the realm of sports.

Give me some facts. I bet their PPV numbers have slowly declined since Tito vs LIddell. Not a shocker the UFC 75 is for free. I promise you if they could make a killing on PPV they would.

Nevertheless, that's what I thought. Spouting off at the mouth with nothing to support your argument.

You little troll.....you said this first "The novelty is wearing off."

MMA keeps breaking its own PPV buys records, I never said boxing.

Boxing has now, and will probably always have the highest PPV buys. They have one huge mega event every couple years. And thats fine. You and I keep arguing about this but I am a boxing fan. I love both sports although I am able to see boxings flaws, unlike most fans which I will never understand. Why cant fans see the flaws in their sport? Why don't they want them fixed?

MMA has tons and tons of huge PPV's all year long so they will NEVER have that huge mega card that everyone talks about because the next PPV is right around the corner.

Look at this...

AUGUST 25 - ShoXC on Showtime
AUGUST 25 - UFC 74
SEPT 1 - ART OF WAR 3
SEPT 5 - WEC 30
SEPT 8 - UFC 75
SEPT 15 - ELITEXC on Showtime
SEPT 17 - K-1 HERO’s MW Tourny Semi-finals
SEPT 19 - UFC FIGHT NIGHT 11
SEPT 19 - TUF 6 begins
SEPT 20 - IFL League Finals
SEPT 22 - UFC 76
SEPT 22 - CAGE RAGE 23
SEPT 29 - Malice at Heff’s Palace

They did a PPV in Ireland at 2:00 in the afternoon for UFC 72 and it wasn't a hit (didn't help that the card sucked!). The only reason UFC 75 is free is because it's in London...

Please explain how the "novelty" has worn off?? Based on what???

Please explain how the "novelty" has worn off?? Based on what???first you need to read the post accurately. I didn't say worn off. I said wearing off. There's a difference. MMA has benefited from the unexplained reason things like Bum Fights did so well. I bet if there was a sanctioned gladiator fight it would do well too. MMA is entering into a period where the sport has got to maintain it's popularity now that the blood and guts crowd has come and gone.

There are some weaknesses in the sport of MMA, but it seems like fans of that sport are blinder than bats.

So it's WEARING off because the "blood and guts" crowd has come and gone? What are you basing that on? When did they get here and when did they leave??

Bum fights? WTF? Minimize much?? What does bum fights have to do with the UFC?? When has bum fights ever been anything more than garbage on a website?? I must've missed ESPN covering bum fights... :lol

What sport doesn't have weaknesses? And I've certainly never said it doesn't. What are the UFC's weaknesses in your opinion?

If Gonzaga wins...

" Gonzaga will be then on top of the world in the eyes of casual UFC fans."

More UFC bias. I don't understand that comment. It insinuates UFC fans are dumb and don't understand what makes a good fighter. Granted he may not be number one but he will (should he win) be close to the top. He will have beaten two of the best at HW in the span of a little over 4 months. Fedor can't say that. No other heavyweight can. Maybe he would be the number one HW. I may not agree 100% but I wouldn't argue with anyone should they say it.

I love sherdog but their bias is getting old. Don't take your hatred of Dana out on the fans......

I think part of the point is that the UFC is the biggest and best organization. If there are top fighters in these classes that don't fight in the UFC, why is it stupid of someone that doesn't follow lower organizations than UFC to say that person would be #1?

I understand that not all of the greatest fighters have to be in the UFC, but how can you keep calling them #1? You have to fight the best to be the best. If Fedor never fights anyone ranked for awhile, does he stay #1?

This is the current problem in MMA versus the way boxing works.

Excellent point. A lot of sherdog is very elite and for some reason I cannot understand, extremely hostile to casual / and or new fans. Its almost as if your expected to have volumes of knowledge of this great sport the moment you decide you’re a fan or your for some reason not as "good" as fans who have been following for years.

No WAY i saw the fight you could hear Herb Dean say to him more than once, "Fight back or am i going to stop the fight". He did not respond. Randy had won the first round 10-9 and the second 10-8 because Gonzaga lost a PT for grabbing the fence. His nose was broke, having trouble breathing and he was getting his ass handed to him. Roger's fight killed me. He was watching the megatron and elbowing Crane. I was cracking up. He looked good escaping many submission attempts. I want to watch him fight someone real though, which he should get. Before t he fight, most people wondered who he was. After the fight, most were impressed.

Cote's win was as I said it could be -- a lucky KO

GSP looked like an animal. It was funny to see Kos on his back all night. GSP has great take down defense. I figured Kos would have more takedowns.

What’s happening in the world of mixed martial arts now …

By Loretta Hunt ([email protected]) and Brian Knapp

COUTURE BREAKS ARM

Even Superman feels it from time to time.

Following yet another feather-in-his-cap performance Saturday at UFC 74 in Las Vegas, real life superhero Randy Couture (16-8), was informed Sunday by doctors that he’d broken his arm during his third round TKO stoppage of Gabriel Gonzaga (8-2).

Couture, 44, sustained the injury Saturday blocking a Gonzaga right high kick with his left forearm, cleanly separating the ulna bone with a “nightstick fracture,” a break common in law enforcement circles. The injury placed the UFC heavyweight champion’s arm in a splint for six weeks. The appendage will not need a cast.

“It’s not displaced, so the doctors think it will reattach in about a week and a half,” said Couture, who embarks on a South African adventure to shoot a leading role in major motion picture “The Scorpion King – The Akkadian” in nearly six weeks. It is believed the injury will not effect Couture’s shooting schedule.

To watch Couture's reaction of his bout and for a re-cap of all the fights, check out The Fight Network's original series "After The Bell" in the homepage's video player.

What do you think he should be ranked at? I don't know if CC should be 3.

I'm a little late...had a business trip to Deleware Sun-Tues...

First off, great night of fights. Second, my picks/bets sucked... :lol

Hugely disappointed in Grove. He should've pushed for a takedown much harder. Damn those punches behind the ear will mess you up...

Glad we got to see Leites...I was impressed with Jensen actually, but he must've learned his armbar defense from Lindland... :lol Leites is a MW to watch in the (near) future...

Crane made it interesting early at least...Huerta showed excellent sub defense and cardio. I thought he might be in trouble a couple times but he powered thru. The end of the fight was just sad to watch...would've been more sad had Huerta not been able to finish Crane off given how gas'd he was. Huerta is still over-rated until he fights a top 20 LW in my opinion. Surely that will happen in his next fight...SURELY!!

Kurt vs Joe was a good fight...no shame in losing to Joe.

Very impressed with GSP. His gameplan was perfect...great to see Koscheck's talk before the fight about their wrestling abilities and then get taken down and held down several times. I think GSP will beat whoever wins Matt vs Matt in Dec...

and Randy...I was very happy that he won...there are so many fights that I'd rather see with him than Gonzaga (I can't pinpoint why, but he annoys the hell out of me!). Randy is the man. However, it does take a little from the win to have Gonzaga's nose crushed by Randy's head on the slam. I don't know if people are bitching or not (I haven't looked at any forums yet) but you could argue it as a no contest (ie, Fedor vs Nog 2). I know they'd never do that to Randy, especially in a title fight...but technically speaking, it was an incidental headbutt that caused significant damage. My thoughts on it are tough shit...don't let a guy that's 25 lbs lighter slam you on your back. The broken nose certainly impacted Gonzaga, but he was still throwing kicks and punches that had me fearing a viscious KO. The headkick that Randy took about 30 seconds before the end of the fight looked like an ender live...very impressive that he walked thru it. The broken nose took away from the fight for me...although seeing Gonzaga spitting blood down Randy's back was quite an image...

Downloading the undercard fights now... :fro (have already read the play by play on them)

Roger Huerta - no more hating, Leonard! Pure genius, using the screen to locate Crane's head and pound on it some more. Had all of us here rolling on the floor laughing.

Side note, Joe Stevenson actually had his jaw broken during his bout last night.

My thoughts on Huerta are above...

Stevenson broke his nose actually...which sucks, because it puts a Nov title fight with BJ in jeopardy due to his medical suspension, training time, etc...

Lots of injuries at UFC 74...

Score one for the old dudes. Randy Couture is (still) the baddest man on the planet!

He's the man, but he hasn't proven to be the "baddest man on the planet" yet...he has to fight Fedor. You know, the guy that Randy said this about after beating Sylvia...

"Fedor is the best pfp fighter in the world"
-Randy Couture, UFC HW Champion

I'm afraid Fedor has signed with K-1 Hero's though...maybe we'll at least get to see Fedor vs Barnett, assuming Josh follows him there...

For the record, I'd pull for Fedor if he fought Randy...but if Randy win it'd be cool as hell too...

i read on sherdog that herb dean stopped another fight early? i heard gonzaga was protecting him self and randy was punching his arm and shit

Try...I don't know...watching the fight maybe? :lol

What the fuck was up with that dude choking after the Tap? He should be suspended for a long ass time.

He was docked $25k of his $50k...and everybody boo'd him. Fuck Babalu...I've officially turned on him now...

UFC 74 Stuff

Josh Barnett rains on Couture's parade...kinda have to agree with him, but not because Josh has the belt...he tested positive for roids after beating Randy. But Dana saying that nobody in the world can beat Randy is ridiculous. Maybe he's just trying to sway Fedor to sign...

Yo leo, do you know how Lesnar has done in his other fights? Any videos of them?

And I agree with you , no one in he world? Ridiculous.
Fedor, Nog, Barnett, could probably all take Randy imo, but I guess we will have to wait and see

Also, do you know if that streetfighter guy who has been training with Bas and who beat that boxer will be in the UFC?

I don't think you'll recoup your original bets. I think you had 128 in wagers, but after the bets and returns, i'm saying you'll have about 80. That's my prediction. :)

Turned $128 into $101... :lol

Thinking about putting it all on Bisping at UFC 75 at -225 against Hamill...

Not too bad -- it was the grove bet that screwed you up. I wouldn't have bet that much on him. There was just this little voice that said (Cote by a lucky strike) on this one.

I was definitely wrong about the Gonzaga fight, though you could blame it on the nose. Still, not a reason to not give Randy the credit. If Gonzaga didn't grab the fence like he did, it would have been much better. Besides, it wasn't Randy's head, it was Gonzaga's own knee. I thought it was Randy's head, but my friend said, "No way, it was his own knee." We kept replaying the one angle, which you definitely can't discern. If you look at the other angle, from Gonzaga's side against the fence, you can clearly see Randy's head starts under his chin and moves toward Gonzaga's armpit.

The only fight that suprised me was Aurelio. He's had two good fights again Gomi -- of course one was a loss, but a good fight none the less. Bad night for Aurelio or is Clay that good?

This is a weird fight.
Fight Prediction:
Bisping with solid strikes, but never hurting Hamill. Hamill with a few takedowns, but great control from the bottom by Bisping causing the fight to be stood up. Re-read that first sentence multiple times because it's a film loop. :)

All depends on where he trains, his cardio (which I suspect) and desire to be a real fighter and not a showpiece.
