I turned to Channel 11 Maximum Sports tonight just in time to catch the end of an interview with Ian Mahinmi. It sounded like he was saying he has been talking to the Spurs for the past couple of weeks. He said he thinks he may be able to play for the Spurs this season. Did anyone else catch the entire interview?

Wishful thinking perhaps.

Is it a general consensus that he would be able to own the D League?

Wishful thinking perhaps.Didn't catch the interview but it makes sense that Mahinmi is very much in the plans for next season. There are roster spots that need to be filled and Mahinmi is an obvious candidate, especially considering his lame duck status in Europe and his forthcoming cheap contract.

I'd actually be surprised if he's not on the team this upcoming season. The Spurs have five NBA level bigmen (if you count Elson :) ). I can't see them bringing in another veteran big at this point. Outside of Williams, there's nobody else who is eligible for the Toros ... and even Williams isn't a sure fire signing at this point due to his lackluster summer league showing.

I'm guessing the Spurs haven't made it official with Mahinmi yet because there are still some things that need to go down. The Udoka situation needs to be handled one way or another. The V-Span situation needs to be worked out. Once that's taken care of, then I think the Spurs start looking at Mahinmi, Williams and maybe even Sanikidze.

No. There's other good players in DLeague. I don't think he'd "own" it.

Good god, let something happen.

I'd be excited if the Spurs signed a freaking parking ticket at this point.

Mahinmi makes sense here this year because he can practice with the Spurs BIGS and learn more than he would in Europe. Almost all the Euro's who have made it in the NBA are guards or sf's. Gasol is the exception. Ian is a legit 6' 11' & 230 lbs. He will continue to bulk up and learn the NBA game. He will play in Austin unless we have an injury. With Udoka apparently coming no one on the IL is going to get any playing time anyway.
