He has a point but he makes no sense backing it up. Nas having a gun conviction ultimately has nothing to do with what happened in VT. He makes very poor corralations for the sake of being arguementative, its pointless and then he cuts everyone off when they try to justify their stance. I can't stand how he simply talks over everyone like their beneath him. How in the world shit like this has become journalism is beyond me. Too bad that author couldn't reach through the screen and bitch slap him.

He has an argument, but he argues it horribly. I dont know much about NAS, but if he has any music glorifying violence, or is a violent person himself, it really has no place around that event.
Now, Bill Oriely is a piece of shit, and doesnt do anything to help his argument, he only ruins it...

I agree he does have a point. But the way he goes about proving his point is ignorant as fuck. Number 1 he can't even pronounce his name right, number 2, Nas isn't a "gangster rapper", Number 3, if it was Quentin Tarantino no one would think twice about it. White violence is art, Black Violence is barbaric.
You can take lyrics from almost any artist and portray them as negative ones. I agree Nas has had his share of songs about guns, coke, bitches etc etc. But he has also had songs like "I Can" "Thugz Mansion" "One Mic" "Can't Forget About You" and on and on. Also I am sure he would pick songs that wouldn't remind people of shootings, hes not an idiot.

Free Virginia Tech concert stirs vocal protests from parents
By CHRISTINA NUCKOLS AND MALCOLM VENABLE,
© August 4, 2007
RICHMOND
Families who lost children in the April 16 Virginia Tech massacre said Friday they are troubled that a free concert next month will feature a rapper known for his violent and profane lyrics.
The concert is being organized by members of the Dave Matthews Band, who proposed it as a show of support for Virginia Tech after a student gunman murdered 32 students and professors and then killed himself.
Also slated to perform are John Mayer, Phil Vassar and New York rapper Nas, who is at the center of the controversy.
A 1999 song by Nas includes the lyrics: "Let the trigger blow, seven shots now he lying on the ground. Blood on the floor. Then we shot some more."
Holly Sherman, whose daughter Leslie was shot to death, said she was unfamiliar with Nas before this week.
"I must agree that the lyrics are very inappropriate for ANY occasion, especially an occasion associated with such sorrow," she wrote in an e-mail to The Virginian-Pilot.
Sherman said she hopes Nas will "tone down the lyrics in light of recent events."
"He is generous to do this for free; he means well. Maybe a compromise can be reached."
Other grieving parents were so angered that they called for the concert to be canceled.
"Virginia Tech should be spending time making it safe for the students coming back to school instead of having a party," said Grafton Peterson, whose daughter Erin was among the victims.
Ambrosia Healy, a publicist for the Dave Matthews Band, issued a statement saying that band members selected the concert lineup to include multiple music styles.
The statement defended the choices, saying, "Nas is a positive force in hip-hop. Over the course of his albums, many of which have included storytelling about the violence of inner-city life, he has evolved into a spokesman for change. His actions stand out as a true lesson in how conflict can be resolved with words."
Nas has won acclaim for more positive musical efforts. His 2003 release, "I Can," features children rapping the chorus with him:
"I know I can (I know I can), be what I wanna be (be what I wanna be), if I work hard at it (if I work hard at it), I'll be where I wanna be (I'll be where I wanna be.)"
Many of the lyrics in his seven solo albums focus on his upbringing in New York as well as his own educational and spiritual growth.
At a concert in Norfolk earlier this year, he spoke to the audience about unifying people of all colors.
Cecelia Hovis, marketing manager for Virginia Tech, said the university will not interfere with the concert lineup.
Hovis said free tickets will be provided to students, faculty, staff and recent Tech graduates. She said some additional tickets will be sold, but the price has not yet been decided. She said proceeds from those sales and the sale of T-shirts will be used to cover the university's costs for hosting the concert. "We're not raising money here," she said.
That has not satisfied some families who are suspicious about the concert's finances.
Vincent Bove, a spokesman representing seven of the victims' families, including the parents of Nicole White of Smithfield, said university officials should apologize, exclude Nas from the concert and provide the families with detailed financial information about the event.

anyone that thinks Dave Matthews is good has no right to call anything else crap. I don't even care for Nas, but I hate Dave Matthews and will devote my life to letting every frat boy and 20-something chick know that he isn't a god of music like they worship him to be. Crappy lyrics and predictable music, thats Dave Matthews in a nutshell. Mabye if Dave Matthews grew a pair of nuts and stopped being such pussy people would take him with credibility; but as of now the only people who do are middle aged women who listen to top 40, frat boys who liked rap their whole life and think that Dave Matthews is the perfect soundtrack to get drunk to, or people who think that anyone who can play guitar during a 15 minute song is a genius. DMB is just overrated, top 40- jam band bullshit.

For the most part... Except I would argue that the thematic elements of a lot of rap perpetuate the link.
Dave Matthews, on the other hand, doesn't have any "let's get a few kegs and try to bang some freshman chicks" songs in his discography that I'm aware of.
It's hard to find DMB lyrics, even out of context, where you can go "See? He's glorifying the fratboy douchebag lifestyle!"

Wow, this take is so far off base its frightening. Fan or not of his music and / or fanbase...He and his entire band are absolutely fantastic muscians. There is not one person in his band would could be considered anything less than a top 5, in whatever instrument they play. They have MASSIVE song arrangments a lot of times, that are on par with orchestra level stuff. There is zero argument you can bring up that these guys are overrated muscians...none at all. Have you heard their drummer for god sake? it is seriously insane how good he is. Have you ever seen or heard them just freestyle on stage for 10 minutes, and how great they play together...that is not shoddy muscianship, its a boat load of talent.
His lyrics are impecable for the most part. I think he is one of the best lyricists around right now. He has fantastic topics, great structure to how he presents them...its a very far longshot to call him a bad lyricist...but at least this is more opinion then fact.
I dont necessiarly fit into the 40+ crowd or the fratboy crowd, and i could see you not liking that whole scene, but that has nothing to do with dave mathews or his band. I actually grew up as a fan of a lot of britrock, Stone Roses, Oasis, Charlatans, etc...I love pop, and electronica....but I am also a fan of good music in general...whether that be rock, country, salsa, rap, chanting, whatever...i like good music and well put together songs...therefore i really like dave mathews.

Thats why I hate Dave Matthews Band fans, they think that their band is some All-star band of musicians becuase they take a 4 minute song and turn it into a 15 minute jam. Just because DMB has a sax player in their band doesn't make them groundbreaking. As for top 5....I can name 250 better axeman than anyone in DMB, I can name 100 better drummers, and I can name 100 better bass players. Since I don't have time here are some lists, and suprisingly there are no DMB band members in the top 100, let alone the top 5.

I dont know. I have 3 DMB albums, and have seen them in concert twice. The reason I hate them is because people who like them think they have unlocked the secret to life by listening to DMB. They are fooled into thinking that DMB is the bees knees of musicl; when in fact, most of these people don't even listen to anything that resembles decent music.
I had a friend try to argue with me that DMB is better than the Rolling Stones, and that they are on par with the Beatles. This is how these crazy people think. They are fooled into thinking that DMB created their genre--which they didn't, Grateful Dead and Phish did-- and they also think that because a bunch of other people are crazy just like them that they are correct with their thinking.

I'm not basing my opinion on sheer dislike for the band. I actually liked their music at one point; but all the crazy people that turned him into a god have turned me off on that band. If you listed every single band to ever record a album, and you listed them from best to worst, DMB would land smack dab in the middle. There are hundreds of hands better than them, and obviously some that are worse.

It's Rolling Stone. The same publication that put 4 Beatles albums in their Top 500 Albums of all time list - including Sgt. Peppers #1. It's funny how the same year Sgt. Peppers came out a much more musically influential, and IMO all around better album came out - Cream's Disraeli Gears. 1st major use of the wah pedal in rock and some of the best, most creative rock drumming. It blows Sgt. Peppers completely out of the water.
