I'd prefer going young, and I've named at least three guys who could be pretty good including Ian. We have gone the old fart route before with decent success -- but I think the premium should now be on athleticism in today's NBA.

HighLowLobForBig-50
08-22-2007, 05:42 PM
very true. i guess only positives are gregs exp. in NBA, for really cheap, he's hungry, great practice dummy for Tim and he's a bruiser out on the court......if its not too late for him.

T Park

Just working guys out aint no big deal.

He could be usefull if Elson or Oberto get hurt.

I'd prefer to have Mahinmi or another young center on the roster.

Duncan, Bonner, Horry, Oberto, Elson.

We will carry one more big on the roster at the start of next season, for a total of 6. We have a very experienced group currently (least experienced is Bonner at 4 seasons IIRC). I agree with Chump that bringing in some youth would be valuable, particularly if it comes with atheleticsim. At that point, Mahnimi is the obvious choice. My other thought is that if we decide to go with a veteran, can we at least get a good one. Mutombo is still unsigned, and he is MUCH better than Ostertag (and likely better than Mahnimi).

I definitely want another shotblocker and defender, so Ostertag is ok. Mutombo would be better but I'd like to get guys like Ian, Fischer or Akindele a shot too.

HighLowLobForBig-50

well im 99.9% sure its not a rumor. he came in the rest. i work at a couple times and finally my manager approached him wondering why he was in town. he said he was working out with the Spurs. Obviously mike fin syndrome.

That could easily be him needing a gym to work out in and Elson or someone needing someone to work out with.

Ian Mahimi needs to get a whole lot better to make it in the NBA. He has underachieved big time and I think the coaching staff is intent on trying to salvage this guy...first round pick and all..

Its hard to not drool over so much potential and athleticism but sometimes guys just don't have what it takes. I'd love to see him become the next great big man for us but any hopes of him contributing anything anytime soon are far fetched.

If you thought Ely had a hard time getting off our bench, you wait till Ian starts modeling the suits on the pine.

Shaq insurance is playing small ball, and forcing Shaq to D Tim. Riley isn't going to want too much of that.

Shaq fucking hates Ostertag, and it may actually squeeze some effort and intensity out of him if he sees Ostertag on the court. Let sleeping dragons lie...

I knew this guy when he was a teenager playing ball at Duncanville, and he was the definition of a guy who's size and talent just overwhelmed everyone but he didn't have the heart. The kid on those D'Ville teams that had heart was Marvin (Marcus?) Bell.

Spurs don't have a big center in their roster. Maybe they are trying to sign a big stiff as 6th bigman and activate him against players like Shaq and Yao. I'm not sure that they should do it. Big centers aren't the answer against Yao : he owned big centers like Damp/Diop while he wasn't great against Utah, Okur and Boozer aren't really big centers. Old Shaq isn't a big threat.

A project as 6th bigman is the best thing to do. it could be Mahinmi or someone else.

Mahinmi is still without a team. The longer Mahinmi is without a team the more likely he will sign sign with Spurs. Training camp for European team have started and euro teams roster are almost full. Finding an euro team, that could be a good fit for Mahinmi, is almost impossible at this stage of the offseason.

Coming from someone who used to personally heckle him in college, the name is Osterfag.

Just think, if he did play for us, the Spurs can would not only have had the 1st player to return from receiving a kidney transplant, but also the 1st player to return after donating a kidney.

What a long, strange trip it’s been
We’re officially in March, and from a sports standpoint, quite frankly, there’s really nothing to talk about. Fortunately, this is why God invented pointless lists — to save wannabe columnists from having to write flowing, coherent thoughts when there’s nothing going on. So, this list goes out to God.

Hmmm, let me think. Okay — we’ll call this list the “Top Five Strangest NBA Stories of the Year, So Far.”

No. 4: Greg Ostertag dances in cheerleader shorts during a pre-game show. Perennial All-Star snub Greg Ostertag apparently lost a bet to several of his Sacramento Kings teammates, forcing him to dance on the court, in front of cheerleaders, while wearing a t-shirt tucked into tiny cheerleader-type shorts. I think this was actually the longest time Ostertag spent on the court all season. (Two side notes here: First, I had no idea Greg Ostertag was on the Kings until I wrote this. I thought he was still on the Jazz. I don’t know if that says less about my knowledge of sports, or more about the prowess of Greg Ostertag. Also, this is the second consecutive column in which I’ve mentioned Greg Ostertag, and I think it’s safe to say that has never happened before in the history of journalism. Where do I pick up my award?)

Maybe you're blind by your Rasho hate but Rasho is more than a big stiff. A reason why Rasho plays good D on a player like Yao is that he has solid defensive fundamentals.
Rasho having success against Yao doesn't mean that big centers are the answer to defend Yao.

Ostertag's only major problem is he wasted so much of his career playing for a loser. Yes, I'm referring to Jerry Sloan. What the hell else can you call Sloan?
18 fucking years, in the same town, same building, same organization, and twice Sloan had a golden opportunity to win a championship (97 + 98) and fritters it away with stupid choices, and missed free throws from his not-so-hot super dude, Karl Malone.

That's Ostertag's mistake. Spurs would be most fortunate, beyond their dreams, if they could land Ostertag. Retired for a year? Who cares. Several future hall of famers have ducked out for a spell and come back. Ostertag is not the first.

With a good coach like Pop, I would expect to see Ostertag shine line never before. Maybe nobody wants Ostertag because of "other factors", which no doubt would be best not to even mention.

Perhaps Spurs should stick with their long-standing tradition of raking in players from everywhere in the world but the USA. Hey, who the hell needs an American guy, right? Didn't they change the country's name recently to United International States of America, or something like that?

:lmao @ mentioning Ostertag and the HOF in the same paragraph. Greg Ostertag is an unmotivated fuck, and that may be why the Jazz never won.

Ostertag is big but with no talent - we used to watch him play in highschool and he was stiff and unathletic even then. I don't question his motivation - afterall he DID play in the NBA for several years which was remarkable given his lack of ability.

you people are truely pathetic.
Vengence is mine sayeth the lord,
ignorance is mine sayeth the people

The SPUDS deserve what they have, and if not for
juicy rulings by the NBA, like banning Joeie Crawford
which amounts to licking bozo Duncan's ass, they wouldn't
have ever made it to the Finals this year.

But it doesn't matter. What will be funny beyond description
is what these millionaire ballplayers do when the economy
goes belly-up. Most of them haven't a clue how to manage
their money, and most will be eating out of garbage cans
a months after all the games are canceled. Let's see how
great Parker, Duncan and his pals are then, when all their
millions have been washed down the sewer by the Wall Street
thieves. ha ha ha ha.

The best way to handle Yao is to make him run.

Get an athlete.
No need. You only need Timmy to continue to poke the ball away from him :lol

I agree, the Spurs' 4 championships have been well-deserved.

If the Spurs got Ostertag it would be one of the very few terrible moves that the Spurs have made in the past few years. Ostertag is soft.
