LAS VEGAS, Agosto 23, 2007 - Tiago Splitter es el centro titular de la selección brasilera. Fue seleccionado en la posición 28 del NBA Draft 2007 por los San Antonio Spurs, y también es una estrella en el baloncesto europeo donde hasta la temporada pasada defendía los colores del Tau Cerámica de España.

Hoy es una pieza clave dentro de la selección brasilera, que también es una de los favoritos para llevarse uno de los dos cupos para las olimpiadas de Beijin. Luego del debút de la selección brasilera Splitter comartió unos minutos con NBA.com.

¿Crees que el primer partido frente a Canadá estuvo más duro de lo que pensabas?
Empezamos bien el partido, tuvimos muchas veces ventaja de 10 puntos que luego la perdimos, creo que falto un poco de concentración pero el balance general es bueno, para ser el primer juego una victoria es muy importante.

¿Fue un partido para romper el hielo?
Si, eso es importante. Recuerdo que el mundial de Japón el primer juego lo perdimos y luego siguió todo mal para nosotros, así que siempre es bueno siempre empezar ganando y con el pie derecho.

¿Hay mucha presión en Brasil para que el equipo consiga uno de los dos cupos a los Olímpicos?
Si mucha, toda la gente, la prensa en nuestro país nos pide mucho. Para Brasil estar fuera de una olimpiada es muy malo y para que el deporte siga creciendo hace falta que lleguemos a los Juego Olímpicos.

¿Cuál es la meta que tienen para la primera parte del torneo?
Bueno nosotros llegamos con la idea de clasificarnos a los Olímpicos, esa es nuestra intención para todo el torneo. Y si hacemos una gran primera ronda pues nos dará confianza para enfrentar los siguientes juegos.

¿Que enseñanza te dejo lo que sucedió en Japón?
En Japón nos salió todo muy mal, también estuvimos en un grupo muy fuerte, con equipos muy buenos y llegaron momentos difíciles en los partidos y no supimos ganar. Ahora esperamos que todo sea diferente, el equipo cuenta con muchos jugadores con gran experiencia, con roles importantes en cada equipo en los que juegan y que van a contribuir mucho en la selección.

¿Un golpe la baja de Anderson Varejao y de Rafael Araujo a último momento?
Bueno, no lo esperábamos. Pero también Nene llega de nuevo a la selección y seguro que va a subir su nivel de juego a lo largo de este torneo. Este es el grupo que tenemos, y somos un conjunto igualmente sólido.

¿De uno a diez en que nivel está Brasil hoy?
Yo creo que siete, estamos en un nivel bueno pero aun tenemos mucho que mejorar.

¿Se habla mucho que este equipo de Brasil puede explotar a nivel mundial en algún momento, qué piensas al respecto?
Si es verdad, tenemos muy buenas individualidades, jugadores muy talentosos, solo falta demostrar eso en la cancha ganando títulos, jugando los Olímpicos y probar que estamos para grandes cosas.

¿En el primer juego dependieron mucho de Leandro?
Si un poco, él comenzó jugando muy bien, especialmente en el tercer cuarto, lo hizo todo para el equipo ofensivamente, pero al final entre todos hicimos el esfuerzo necesario para salir con el primer triunfo.

LAS VEGAS, August 23, 2007 - Tiago Splitter is the starting center for the National Brazilian Team. He was drafted 26th in the 2007 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs, and was also a star in Europe, where up until last season; he wore the Tau Cerámica colors.

Today, he is instrumental for Brazil, another favorite in the run for the two spots to the Summer Olympics in Beijing. Following his debut with the National Brazilian Team, Splitter spoke to NBA.com.

Do you think the first game against Canada was harder than you expected?
We started the game strong; we had a big 10 point advantage that we later lost. I think that it was a lack of concentration, but the general balance was good. Considering it was the first game, a win was very important.

Was this a game to break the ice?
Yes, that’s important. I remember the World Championships in Japan. We lost the first game and then everything went downhill from there. So it’s always good to start with a win, on your right foot.

Is there a lot of pressure for Brazil to secure of the two spots to the Olympics?
Yes, very. Everyone, even the press in our country is asking us to win. It's not good for Brazil to be out of the Olympics and for the sport to continue growing, we need to make it to the Olympic Games.

What is your goal for the first round of the tournament?
Well, we are here thinking that we will classify to the Olympics, that’s our intention for this tournament. If we have a good first round, then we’ll gain a lot of confidence for the next several games.

What did you learn from Japan?
Japan was bad for us. We were playing against a strong group, with good teams. We had tough moments during the games and we just didn’t know how to win. We think things will be different this time around. The team has players with a lot of experience, with important roles in the teams for which they play, and they will contribute to our National Team.

Did the last minute withdrawal of Anderson Varejao and Rafael Araujo affect the team?
Well, we weren’t expecting it. But then again, now we have Nene on the team and I’m sure he’s going to increase his level of play throughout the tournament. This is the team that we have and we are still a solid group.

From one to 10, what’s Brazil’s level of play right now?
I think it’s a seven. We are at a good point but we still have to improve.

There are talks about this team making it big on the global scale at some point. What do you think about that?
Yes, it’s true. We have very good individual personalities, talented players, and it’s just a matter of demonstrating our potential on the court by winning a title, playing in the Olympics and proving big things.

Do you feel you relied too heavily on Leandro in the first game?

Yes, a little. He started playing really well, especially in the third quarter, it was good for the team offensively, but in the end, we all pulled together and made the necessary efforts to win the game.
