View Full Version : Observations of Oden during Blazers practice

We got a look at a healthy Oden, and to say he was impressive is an understatement. He about ripped the rim down with several dunks, and was swatting shots away at the defensive end. He was explosive around the rim, and showed his developing outside touch. Probably most impressive is the way this 19-year old controls the middle of the paint. His defense is here. The offense is right around the corner.
Frye, who had to guard Oden most of the day, sat next to me between one of the games, and said, "that kid is a monster, just a monster. He is so strong. He has no idea how strong he is. He doesn't even realize it. He was just throwing me around," said Frye, shaking his head. Keep in mind, Frye has been with the USA select team in Las Vegas, guarding the likes of Dwight Howard and Amare Stoudemire. Kevin Pritchard, who was also in Vegas, was just telling us on the radio last week how impressed he was with Frye's defense on the Dream Team's big men.
After the workout, I asked Oden how he feels. "Pretty good," he said. "I'm here to get in shape, and am going to hit the weights like crazy." So, in other words, he's only going to get stronger.

That quote basically described Dwight Howard to a tee. Has been out of the 1st round in the weak ass Eastern Conference yet? Good to be excited, but it takes so much more to make a champion.

This sounds like a derogatory comment about Oden, so let's examine this one line at a time:

That's a good thing. Dwight Howard is a freaking beast inside, and Oden is bigger and stronger than Howard.
If you don't think Dwight Howard's a stud, then that puts you in a category with SpursDynasty. Some company that is.

No, but the talent around Howard last season was certainly not very good. A lot of All-Stars, perhaps most of them, would have trouble winning a playoff series with the sort of supporting cast Howard has.
Good to be excited, but it takes so much more to make a champion.
I missed the part where the Blazers were predicting a 2008 championship.

It will be nice to have a competitive team here in Portland again.

Yea there is, its not some kind of given that he will be
its good to see that he will hit the weights. however, there can be a downside. i started lifting like crazy my junior year because that was my first year on Varsity, but then i was lifting too hard that i got big and my endurance went down. Oden better be careful. all in all, i think i worried about it a little too much. i still want to see want kind of cardio shape Oden is in. it sounds like he is great, but can he keep up the energy all 4 quarters of an NBA game.

It wasn't a derogatory comment. It was a realistic comment.

Are you crazy? Howard is a hell of a lot stronger than Oden right now. Oden can always get stronger, but I missed how that's supposed to make him a great basketball player? Robert Traylor was strong too.
If you don't think Dwight Howard's a stud, then that puts you in a category with SpursDynasty. Some company that is.
Dwight Howard isn't a superstar. He's a very strong and athletic center who is strong defensively, but lacks a lot on offense. He has potential, but hasn't shown as much improvement since he came into the league as a lot of people thought he would.

EXACTLY. TlongII has been in this forum touting the Blazers as Championship contenders within a couple of years. I'm making the point that it takes much more than a good defensive big man with decent O skills. That's the start, but many teams have had dominant big men and didn't win jack shit. The Spurs don't win titles without Tim Duncan, but they also don't win with Tim Duncan and no Pop, Manu, or TP, DRob, Ellie, and the great defensive system. It takes much, much more, and the Blazers may or may not have it. My money is on the not, at least for 4 or 5 years considering they get a great defensive coach.

The Blazers haven't, but the thread starter has been touting this as a title team of the near future for a while now. You been asleep?

:lol The Cowboys went 13-3 that year and they were all talking super bowl. Romo and Witten were partying in Mexico while the Giants were dominating the Bucs.Cowboys fans scoffed at the Giants and were looking ahead to playing Green Bay in the NFCCG. 21-17 happened which left the city of Dallas in pure shock.
