Brooklyn Baby Sports 12 Fingers, 12 Toes

NEW YORK (AP) - Something was different about newborn Jeshuah Fuller, but his proud parents couldn't quite put their finger on it.

Then his doctors, always on their toes, figured it out: Jeshuah was born with a few extra digits -six fingers on each hand, six toes on each foot.

Jeshuah, born in Brooklyn on Tuesday, is healthy and weighs just over 7 pounds. His rare condition, called polydactylism, is usually genetic. His dad was born with an extra finger on his left hand.

Jeshuah's mom, Quana Morris, said she'd had an ultrasound image taken during her pregnancy and knew he'd have extra fingers.

"We were counting them on the sonogram," she told the Daily News.

The extra toes, though, were a surprise.

Jeshuah is getting a hand from his doctors to deal with the bonus digits, which are outside the pinkies and little toes and serve no purpose. He'll have them surgically removed in a couple of weeks, his mom said.

does that mean he will learn to count to 12 faster than most children?

That would be funny if the article didn't say that the extra digits are going to be removed.

We just be cool like that.

My friend's youngest daughter was born with 4 thumbs.
At first they thougth they were useless, but around 6 months they noticed she could move them. They were planning on surgery when she was 1 year old, but had to put it off when she got a bad ear infection around that time. Then they decided ot wait and see... around age 4 the girl decided she wanted them off because "they get in my way mommy".
So they had the surgery... and a little "goodbye" party for the thumbs. :lol just an excuse for cake really.

I learned from researching "polydacty" that some cats on the East Coast have opposable thumbs, which they use to open doors and cabinets and such.

So far, they have conquered a three-county area in northern Vermont and set up their own Empire in which humans are their slaves.

According to research, it is more common in areas where there is a lot of inbreeding.
