IRVING, Texas - Despite the Cowboys having most of their starters, and even several backups, already in place since the start of training camp, the final cuts are never easy.

And while the Cowboys released 22 players on Saturday to trim down to the 53-player limit, it certainly couldn't have been easy for the club to let go of a savvy veteran with 13 years of experience, especially at a position that already has several question marks.

But that's what they did by cutting veteran cornerback Aaron Glenn, who was expected to be the team's nickel corner. Glenn started the final three preseason games in place of Terence Newman, who has a partial tear in his plantar fascia. But the Cowboys are hopeful Newman will be ready for the Sept. 9 opener against the Giants.

The Cowboys certainly hope he is, because not only did they release Glenn, but also cornerbacks Joey Thomas and Quincy Butler. That means fourth-year veterans Jacques Reeves and Nate Jones both survived the cuts, as did rookies Alan Ball and Courtney Brown, who was moved to safety in training camp.

In fact, all eight draft picks made the team, including sixth-round pick Nick Folk, who will handle all of the kicking duties, at least to start the season. That's because the Cowboys have placed veteran Martin Gramatica on injured reserve because of strained hamstring he suffered last week.

While Gramatica will be placed on IR, that doesn't guarantee his $800,000 base salary. It's likely the Cowboys will give him an injury settlement in the next few days. If that happens, Gramatica would not be eligible to return to the roster for at least six weeks, plus the length of the settlement.

Other notable cuts include outside linebacker Junior Glymph, one of the players picking up the slack in the absence of Greg Ellis (heel). While head coach Wade Phillips has said he is getting closer to ruling Ellis out for Sunday's game with the Giants, the roster moves don't actually reflect that statement.

The Cowboys have only three outside linebackers on the current roster in Ellis, DeMarcus Ware and rookie Anthony Spencer. However, second-year veteran Bobby Carpenter also has been taking reps on the outside. The Cowboys also waived outside backers John Saldi and Khari Long.

Phillips said earlier on Saturday that the Cowboys released some players who played well in Thursday's loss to the Vikings.

Two players from that group would include wide receiver Jerheme Urban, who scored on a 95-yard punt return, and quarterback Matt Moore, who played more than two quarters and engineered a touchdown drive.

The Cowboys also released fullback Lousaka Polite but kept Oliver Hoyte and rookie Deon Anderson on the roster.

The Boys must have seen something I didnt with the other corners, because Glenn was by far the best corner they had besides the big 2. Cornerback depth is ridiculously sketchy now
I hate the Glmyph and Ayodele cuts.

They can bring back the guys that clear waivers, but even then someone could take them if they give them a spot on the 53 man roster. I think they can stash Matt Moore because I don't see anyone giving him a spot on the 53, but some of the other guys like Glenn might be picked up by someone.

I'm pretty sure the Glenn cut was a money issue. Aside from looking average at best in the PS Glenn was set to make 1.8 to 2 million this season. That's a pretty big chunk for a nickel corner, and the Cowboys didn't want that money guaranteed if he made the roster. That said, having J. Reeves as the third corner is a damn nerve racking ordeal for a defense that needs strong one on one corner play to be dominant. It looks like the season will ride on Newman's foot.

The club claimed outside linebacker Justin Rogers, a sixth-round pick from SMU who spent training camp with the Patriots, and defensive back Evan Oglesby, a two-year veteran who was recently cut by the Baltimore Ravens.

To make room on the 53-man roster, the Cowboys released a pair of defensive backs - safety Abram Elam and rookie cornerback Alan Ball. The club had kept all eight draft picks on the roster before cutting Ball, a seventh-round pick from Illinois.

The Cowboys also formed most of their practice squad on Sunday, signing seven players who have been with the team for the entire training camp and preseason.

The club signed running back Alonzo Coleman, tight end Rodney Hannah, quarterback Richard Bartel, wide receiver Mike Jefferson, linebacker Khari Long, cornerback Quincy Butler and defensive end Marcus Smith. The Cowboys hope to add Ball to the final spot on the practice squad by Monday if he clears waivers.

But missing from the practice squad is a pair of players who were picked up by other teams. Rookie quarterback Matt Moore was claimed off waivers by the Panthers and defensive tackle Remi Ayodele was signed by the Falcons. Also, Arizona signed wide receiver Jerheme Urban, though he was not eligible for the practice squad. Urban joins Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley, who spent the last three years with the Cowboys, including last season as the team's passing game coordinator.

In the 2007 preseason with the Ravens, Oglesby had 10 tackles and pass breakup.

I just wanted to amplify something in the above article: Jerheme Urban is a graduate of Trinity who grew up on a ranch near Victoria. He didn't even play WR before breaking a wrist his freshman year at Trinity (where he was brought in as a QB) and now he's back on an active roster in the NFL. Way to go dude!
