This just in from the Dallas Newspapers

Lets see Stern try to fine these guys LOL

Stars billboard makes light of NBA referee scandal

DALLAS -- The Dallas Stars may have already taken themselves out of the running for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy -- the NHL's award for "sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct."

As part of the team's "come into the cold" ad campaign to sell seats for 2007-08, the Stars took a shot at the NBA's referee scandal on a billboard near the American Airlines Center, the building the Stars share with the Dallas Mavericks.
The message? "The only thing our refs shave is the ice."

But Mavericks owner Mark Cuban didn't seem to mind, according to the Dallas Morning News.

"I think it's hysterical," Cuban told the newspaper. "Good for them. It's a fun ad."

The campaign, dreamt up by the Stars and Austin, Texas ad agency Door Number 3, is aimed at conveying the toughness of hockey players in an edgy style. One board reads "One game a week? Is the N in NFL for Nancy?" the Morning News reported.

Even baseball was not immune, despite the fact Stars owner Tom Hicks also owns the Texas Rangers: Another billboard reads "Maybe baseball should stop using the word sacrifice," according to the Morning News.

Stars president Jim Lites said Hicks laughed at that one, the newspaper said.

NBA Commissioner David Stern, who was made aware of the Stars' ad campaign on Thursday afternoon, said through a league spokesman that he had no comment, according to the report.

The Stars didn't take a swipe at the NBA without some reservations, Lites told the Morning News.

"It's edgy. But we're really good friends with the Mavs. They're our partners in the building. I think we thought it would be taken the right way," Lites told the newspaper. "It's not a slap at them. It's more of a snip. I think the same goes for the Cowboys. The NFL is the big daddy."

as a Mavs fan, I must say that it FUCKING SUCKS that the Dallas Stars have made the bigger Mavs-related news than the Mavericks have this entire offseason.

Kudos to the Stars for a decent ad campaign. Shit on the Mavericks for thinking that basically the exact same team that shit the bed against G-State is capable of a title run next season.

But wait, "the warriors weren't a typical 8-seed", "dampier was hurt", "terry didn't bail out the MVP of the league", "we didn't have shawn bradley's incredibly shot-blocking ability" and every other bullshit excuse given out by every other Mavs fan on this board.

"The only thing our refs shave is the ice." ~NHL Dallas Stars Ad

That is awesome, and as an ad campaign, I'd be surprised if it DOESN'T work. Controversy sells, plain and simple. I think, while the NBA is not to blame for the actions of one person (or at least, they are not to blame yet), it would be ridiculous for others NOT to joke about it and take shots. It's a current topic, and it is funny, so why the hell not? The Stars should get an award for this. :lol

A) This is about hockey, not Soccer/Futbol
B) Baseball is the most boring sport out there.

First off let me start off by saying hockey blows but its sad when the best thing about your sport is its marketing campaign. Kudos to the Stars for coming up with it and it should be taken "tongue and cheek".

When you're the obvious fourth horse in a four horse race, and the NHL is, you do what you have to. I wouldn't want to be the Stars management if there is a scheduling conflict or favor with the AAC, and they have to go hat in hand to Stern, though. I'm thinking no joy on that one. I'm also one that thinks it's foolish to make enemies unnecessarily, and they just did exactly that.

haha..I get this ad. Since Mark Cuban and the Mavs share the same building with the Jim Lites and the Stars. It's inevitable that Cuban talks to Lites now and then. Cuban could never have gotten away with saying something like that without drawing a huge fine from David Stern for "impugning the reputation of the NBA". On the other hand, Stars owner Lites with his ad campaign brings in humor, controversy and a brilliant ad campaign for selling tickets for the Stars while Cuban gets the last laugh at Stern. Lites can't get fined by Stern since it's coming completly outside the NBA so Lites can say whatever he wants.

It's funny and it gets David Stern's goat. Score one for Mark Cuban and Jim Lites lol.
