Charles Barkley's Hex on the Spurs is not Working

August 30, 2007 4:06 PM

One of TrueHoop's most dedicated readers is a dude with no first name. Well, as much as he has a first name, it's NFN, which stands for "No First Name." His last name is Kalyan. (He's an amazing musical talent, as you can hear from checking out his website which I have linked to before.)

For whatever reason, NFN's as big a Charles Barkley fan as there is. Maybe you noticed a lot of Charles Barkely on YouTube in today's bullets. That's all NFN's doing: finding good stuff like that and sending it to me.

He just sent another Barkley clip, which is essentially Barkley saying that bad things will happen to the San Antonio Spurs because, he says, they rested starters to improve their draft position to get David Robinson and Tim Duncan.

Barkley talks about morals, and invokes the notion of divine intervention.

For a laugh, TNT takes Barkley's prediction of doom for the Spurs, spoken in 1997, and puts it up against a graphic of the team's record since. The graphic includes an insane number of wins, championships, and MVPs.

This little video clip is amusing, but it also may be the most powerful evidence I have ever seen that (assuming Barkley is right, and the Spurs did lose games intentionally) tanking pays.

This links to an interesting youtube video of Sir Charles dissing (an alleged, by him) Spurs tank job to get TD. I've never seen anyone openly talk about that (other than those Celtics fans).

Hmmmmm, so we tanked to get 3rd last in the league and a 15.6% chance at Duncan?

Or was it that David Robinson injured his back in the 6th game of the season, an injury he never truly recovered from?

:rolleyes

Idiot. If we truly tanked it, you think we would have been 3rd last???

We got lucky, and you are clutching at straws, just as Chuck was. Remember, he was watching his career end without a ring at the time...

So...Robinson was injured ....came back for 6 games(if i recall correctly) broke his foot and was out the remainder of the season and barkley thinks it was intentional?

He doesn't strike me as one who pays attention to detail.

Though I love to watch Barkley on TNT we have to consider the source. Barkley's comments tend to go all over the place. He's a virtual rollercoaster when it comes to commentary on the NBA. At least he got one thing right - "I'm not a role model!" I always take much of what he says with a truck load of salt.

Yeah, we tanked to get roughly 1/3 the chance Boston had to land Duncan.

It would behoove you to not shoot the messenger, boys.

Yup, you're right, I thought it was the back injury that took him out for the season but it was his foot. I was right that he never truly recovered from the back injury though...

Yeah, I love Chuck too. But he's well known for having no filter between his brain and his mouth. :lol

Wasn't Chuck a Rocket when he said that? All's fair in division rivalry.
