Splitter calls for European coach
SAO PAULO (National Team) - Brazil center Tiago Splitter has urged the country's basketball authorities to appoint a European coach to take the team forward in the aftermath of their failure to qualify directly for the Olympic Games in Beijing.
Aluisio Ferreira's team finished fourth at the FIBA Americas Championship in Las Vegas behind the United States and Argentina, both of whom booked their tickets to next year's event in China.
During the competition, Ferreira came under heavy criticism from several quarters, who accused him of poor management.
On Tuesday, small forward Marcus de Souza added his voice to the long list of critics and Splitter believes it is time for Ferreira to go.
"I think the national team needs a new lift," Splitter said. "It's no secret that a European boss would be welcomed to help us.
"Now that it's all over, the CBB (the Brazilian Basketball Confederation) should analyse what the best future of our basketball team is."
Brazil still have a chance to qualify for the Olympics via another tournament to be played next year.
