Last time I counted, about 3 ppl at SpursTalk gave a shit about rugby. I'll start this thread anyways. Play begins September 7th.

Probably a little known fact is that this is the third most watched sporting event in the world, behind the Olympics and FIFA World Cup.

The US team is a middle of the road team and really doesn't have much of a chance.

nice, i thought no one cared on here.

On paper the All Blacks are unbeatable, but this is the world cup and in past years in the world cup they don't seem to get the job done when it matters.

but this year i think its different, they have prepared for this world cup really well doing their re-conditioning program which has made them stronger players than they have ever been they have the fastest and most skilful backs, infact they almost have the best of everything and with their two main players dan carter and richie mccaw, which are the two best in the world. i think they should win it fairly easily.

Holy Fuck! are you kidding me....i was going to make a thread about this since we are on the eve of France v. Argentina.

Best Team: New Zealand
Most Underrated Team: Argentina/Italy/England
My Pick to Win it All: France

...i love the France style of play and my favorite player of all time is Dominici, so those guys are my pick. unfortunately for Ireland and Argentina only one of them will make it out of pool play...i like Ireland if O'Driscoll is healthy.

watching the game tomorrow at the bar on Setanta at noon....can't fucking wait. anybody who hasn't seen rugby or doesn't know what it is...get your ass to a bar that has Setanta. off the top of my head Lion & Rose does, so thats a good bet. and as mentioned before its the 3rd most watched event in the world.

I'll be rooting for Ireland since i've got some Irish heritage, and I freakin love watching O'Driscoll. ESPN and SI keep trying to hype up Ronan O'Gara since he's from San Diego, and he's a real good player, but O'Driscoll is just a fuckin badass.

I'm getting the hell out of the office in 45 minutes and meeting with some friends to watch the opener, Pumas vs Les Blues!

France is the favorite. We have 20% chance of beating them, at best. Everything has to go our way.

haha wow.

I don't get why rugby isn't an Olympic sport anymore....and whottt was wrong, more people worldwide watch the RWC than the Super Bowl.

But I do think he has a point that the majority of American athletes best suited for rugby play American Football instead, which is why the USA isn't very competitive in the RWC. If guys like Reggie Bush and Ray Lewis played rugby, USA would at least make it into the knockout rounds.

I agree with erverything you say.

My big issue with whottt's argument was that the US' rugby team was the best because they won the Olympic Gold in the 1920s. But they played against 2 teams????!!!!! And they never played against the true powerhouses, NZ, AUstraliand SouthAfrica.

the line was France -12, which was too high but i did expect France to win by about 7. i just couldn't believe how the game turned out...and then getting booed off the field, shit. France has their work cut out for them...though i could see them in an inspired effort, easily handling Ireland. we'll see...

tomorrow's games are a joke, with maybe Italy v. New Zealand the exception...i could see Italy hanging around for a bit. but England is going to destroy USA and Australia annihilate Japan.

They played with a ton of heart, and it could have been much worse, but i'm happy that they fought like hell.

Also, from what I've read, England is a much weaker team than they were in 2003. I didn't follow rugby until about a year ago, is this true?

To answer your question, here is an excerpt from the BBC.co.uk website:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/rugby_union/english/6983423.stm

England may have gone into the match as defending champions but the current side is a pale shadow of the World Cup-winning team and, on this display, their chances of repeating the 2003 victory look remote to say the least.

I didn't see the game but from what I've read, the US gave England quite a run for its money there. Well done :tu

A small win by +7 pts with bonus from Ireland and your team is out.... and if you know about rugby, you'll see it's very possible with the irish and their fighting spirit which occasionnaly help them to bounce back after a loss...

About the Blacks, it's funny to see how people consider them to rugby as the Brazilian to the soccer... they just have won 1 WC, the first one 20 years ago, and didn't qualified to the final since 1995...
NZ @ the worldcup :
2003 : Semi Final : loss 22-10 against Australia
1999 : Semi Final : loss 43-31 against France
1995 : Finalist : loss 15-12 against South Africa
1991 : Semi Final : loss 16-6 against Australia
1987 : Winner : win 29-09 against France

If France plays NZ in quater final, off course NZ will be more than favourite, but remember 1999, that was the same story and they have won. That was unpredictable, but they scored to the Blacks more points than any team managed to before. France is the 3rd most successful team against NZ rugby, and is known for its unpredictable wins, fans should know about that.

I'm not saying it is impossible, but they would have to score at least 4 tries and beat us by more that 7 points.

Considering they beat Namibia 32-17 (Argentina beat them 63-3) and they barely scraped by Georgia 14-10 in a match they deserved to lose (Argentina beat Georgia 33-3), I'd say Ireland has by far the tougher challenge.

But games have to be played before people can run their mouths so let's see what happens Sunday.

A small win by +7 pts with bonus from Ireland and your team is out.... and if you know about rugby, you'll see it's very possible with the irish and their fighting spirit which occasionnaly help them to bounce back after a loss...
you can talk about the Irish fighting spirit all you want, but fact is Pumas haven't been scored 4 tries since 27 international games ago... it would be surprising if they started now. I'm not saying its imposible, I'm saying its highly unlikely. Its quite possible Ireland could win, but score 4 tries? and beat us by 7 points? Odds are not good

If England doesn't step up, Australia will get an easy win.
New Zeland vs France in Cardif 9:00 PM
I can't predict a winner, either the all Blacks destroy french pack, either the flair makes the difference for a short win.

Sunday :
South Africa vs Fidji in Marseille 3:00 PM
Even with their big hearts, I can't see the Springboks loosing this game.
Argentina vs Scotland
Scotland is a weakest team remaining in the tournament. Puma's defence will make the difference.

Comming back of the lastest results of Pool D, I'd say that Argentina reminds me England team in 2003 : great defence, good scrum, but poor offensive game using a lot free kicks to bring the game in their opponent's camp. Ugly to watch, but it made them winning games. I can't wait to see them against South Africa to see if they can really perform well against a team with higher skills and physical level. And who knows (I start dreaming :spin ), what about a rematch of the opening game for the final ???

http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/07102007/58/world-cup-france-promise-famous-win.html

The exiled hosts, who trailed 13-3 at halftime, now return home to prepare for a semi-final with England in Paris after the defending champions also overcame the odds to record an equally dramatic 12-10 victory over Australia in Marseille earlier in the day.

For the All Blacks, 13-0 up as early as the 30th minute, defeat was arguably as devastating as their unexpected 43-31 loss to France in the semi-finals of Rugby World Cup 1999.

"Bravo to all the players," said Laporte, with a grin that went from ear to ear.

"After losing the first match to Argentina, we suffered a lot of things but tonight the response was there. We beat a great team and we want to go further.

"We didn't want to play the game here in Cardiff but we had to because we lost our first game.

"We had to pick ourselves up and get ourselves back in the World Cup.

"The players reacted with a lot of determination. They didn't want to die today. This team really showed a lot of guts because we weren't playing in France.

"The All Blacks certainly had far more possession than us but our discipline was excellent - it really played a great role in our win.

"We kicked the ball a bit aimlessly in the first half but the players were patient, and in terms of possession, things balanced themselves out in the second half.

"It was a good win for us, but from tomorrow we start thinking about England. It's going to be another really tough match."

France captain Raphael Ibanez, who was in the team that beat New Zealand in 1999, revealed his players went eyeball-to-eyeball with the All Blacks during the pre-match haka to demonstrate their pride in the jersey.

"We took the decision three days ago," he said.

"We weren't trying to indulge in provocation - we have a lot of respect for the haka.

"But by nailing our flags to the mast, we wanted to show how proud we were of wearing our country's colours.

"I believe that every time you play New Zealand you have to play out of your skin and that's what happened this evening. This will remain with me for the rest of my life.

"It was a great victory. They players really gave everything right until the end. In the World Cup courage and team spirit can make a big difference. We played with a lot of heart.

"At half-time we talked very well and Bernard told us that at 13-3 the last 40 minutes were the most important in our lives."

New Zealand coach Graham Henry paid France handsome praise after seeing two years of work go up in smoke in Cardiff.

"Of course we're disappointed but that's sport," said Henry.

"But I'm proud of the players. No, we didn't play as well as before, but the French were strong in defence.

"It's fair to say that the best team won. That was the best French team we have faced for years.

"People will judge me as they see fit but I feel comfortable that I've done everything I can.

"Obviously the World Cup is the pinnacle. We gave it our best shot and it wasn't good enough.

"I just feel for the guys, who have spent a huge amount of time preparing for this. It's not the time to think about the future at the moment."

The All Blacks coughed up a 13-0 lead on the way to defeat, and skipper Richie McCaw could not put words to his feelings in the wake of the shock defeat.

"I'm lost for words," said the crestfallen flank.

"We always knew they could come back in the second half, but we lost our composure. I thought we could get it back, but it wasn't to be.

"We went out there to play our best but we were not allowed to play our best because of a good French team.

"I thought the boys were ready to play today.

"We were beaten by the better team. Some guys probably played last games for the All Blacks and that hurts as well.

"I'm at a loss to explain why we didn't put our game together as we would have liked.

"We said we had to score first in the second half but we didn't do that and the French lifted.

I like the fairplay and the respect the NZ show in the defeat, too bad that game was only a quarter final :clap

Can someone explain me how the refs screwed in this game ???

The only litigious thins is the forward pass on the last try, and it's almost impossible to see it if the ref is not on the same line !
That sort of thing happens in every rugby game, and nobody can blame the refs for that. Of course, drinking beers, on your sofa, watching TV, it's easy to criticize...

It shouldn't of been a yellow card, the winning try was a forward pass, every 50/50 call went frances way and how france wasn't penalised at the end when they were under pressure was insane. The refs favoured the home team, do you need anymore proof?

And if the ref wasn't inline on the forwad pass, the linesman was and the video ref would of seen it. If that was New Zealand they would of called it back for the forward pass. No doubt about it.

It shouldn't of been a yellow card,

Really ? Why not ? the NZ blocked a player with no ball running to get it, the rule is to get a yellow card. Without the fault, the french could have get the ball and score a try.

the winning try was a forward pass

I've already said that was part of the game

every 50/50 call went frances way and how france wasn't penalised at the end when they were under pressure was insane
Under pressure, in the final minutes, France haven't done any mistakes on the pick and go : they didn't try to get the ball, didn't blocked the ball or anything like that. What have they done the ref could have penalized ?
During the rest of the game, NZ have been penalized when they had to be, french too.

And if the ref wasn't inline on the forwad pass, the linesman was and the video ref would of seen it. If that was New Zealand they would of called it back for the forward pass. No doubt about it.
Come on, you're from NZ, you know about rugby and it's rules, the ref in charge of the video never look for a forward pass at 40 meters of the line, he may have look at the last pass, if the player goes out, if he push the ball well, etc.... This is ridiculous, I understand your sadness, but it's still ridiculous.

im not taking anything away from france, they played a great game and their defense was fantastic, NZ had something like 75% of the possession, so that show how well the french defense was. but the refs were shocking and they changed the result of the game, and its sad to see how the refs can have such an influence on a game with such a shocking proformance.

World Cup - Chief backs Barnes
Eurosport - Tue, 09 Oct 17:50:00 2007
International Rugby Board referee manager Paddy O'Brien has staunchly defended World Cup quarter-final referee Wayne Barnes after he was heavily criticised following New Zealand's tournament exit.

Englishman Barnes has come under fire from New Zealand rugby chiefs and the country's media, and has been subjected to personal abuse and death threats from fans on internet sites after the All Blacks lost 20-18 to France in Cardiff on Saturday.

New Zealand Rugby Union chairman Jock Hobbs told Radio New Zealand that two crucial decisions by Barnes had cost the All Blacks the match -- the sin-binning of centre Luke McAlister and missing a forward pass in the lead-up to France's second try.

O'Brien said the criticism was unfounded.

"I think it's a disgrace and people have to grow up," he told BBC Radio 5live.

"New Zealand losing that game was not all about the forward pass. The pass was forward but that's rugby refereeing.

"Hindsight is a wonderful thing but you can't turn back the clock.

"I'm a very proud Kiwi and I wear my heart on my sleeve when the All Blacks are playing, but it doesn't change my judgement.

"Sport is about winning and losing and New Zealand lost, let's get on with life. It's a sad reflection and I'd like to say that it's not all New Zealand people."

Barnes, 28, is the youngest of the RWC referees and took charge of an international for the first time last year.

On another site, I've found that 75% of the French would like to play against the Pumas in final... but before, in 2 hours, it's crunch time ! :hungry:
