From thebiglead.com

"The mass exodus from newspapers to the internet continues. The Big Lead has learned that two more sports writers have lost interest in being ink-stained wretches and bolted for the riches of the web: Jason King, an APSE-winning journalist from the KC Star, and Johnny Ludden from the San Antonio Express-News have both been hired by Yahoo Sports. King will cover colleges; Ludden the NBA. The third hire is not official yet, but could be by the end of today: Steve Politi of the Newark Star-Ledger is set to join the website as a columnist."

Expect his E-N replacement to be downgrade. Johnny was pretty damn good for a small market.

When do we expect the Express News to announce it?

I think Johnny Blaze works for the Express News as well.

Man, that's horrible news. Ludden was as plugged into the Spurs as any journalist could be. Any of his innuendos were 100% accurate.

Even though Ludden had gotten lazy over the last couple years, he was still damn good. However, I had heard through the grapevine that he was bored with his job.

Johnny Ludden was probably the best beat writer in the league. This sucks.

Thanks for posting this news, ducks.

That's a real shame for Spurs fans. I hope Johnny likes his new gig but this is a big loss for San Antonio and Yahoo's gain.

Great, now we'll know even less about the Spurs.

Ludden was very good but some of his success came from staying wihtin the bounds of what the Spurs' FO wanted said and therefore having access to information Pop would normally not provide to others. I wonder how he'll position himself in his new job.

This would appear to be a wonderful step for Johnny Ludden's career, so that's a very good thing for him.

Newspapers may be dying a slow and painful death.

Newspapers may be dying a slow and painful death.

I tried a thread on this (http://spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65979) a few months ago, but it never got going.

Opinion still stands, and Ludden leaving only makes me smile more about being right.

Great for him, since he's clearly seen the direction things are going. Now if only the rest of us would catch up....

If it's not too personal, may I ask why?

You're a fantastic writer, I would think it could be a great opportunity for you.

My assumption is that your work now is pretty much under your control and that maybe the Express News would be too demanding on your time?

Just curious... :)

Too much travel.

I would likely make less money than I do now.

Good reasons!

Their loss.

A good beat writer, but it's not like Ludden ever really strayed that far from the company line. Of course, a perpetually antagonistic pen can be less of a joy to read (KO'K). It will be nice if the Express can find a solid replacement who is sufficiently skeptical.

The exposure is worth a lot I would assume. It could lead to national media attention, and then maybe a book or two?

That's just my uninformed 2cents.

Ludden will get much more exposure at Yahoo! than he could ever dream of having at the EN. Beat writers do it because they love the job, not where it will take them. Getting a book deal out of it is even more ridiculous an expectation (not on your part, though, but just in general by anyone).

Ludden made a great move for Ludden, and as long as the local print news exists, it will always have a focused market and the inherently low career ceiling that comes with it.

Tough for the EN, but they'll be a complete non-factor in 10 years anyway. I expect I'll never buy a subscription to it.

Sure, the exposure would be worth a lot to someone, just not to me.

Not that I'm saying I would even be considered for the job if I applied, but the travel isn't something I'd even be willing to do.

We all knew Ludden was so inside that the Spurs largely controlled what news he could and couldn't print. Even so, we learned more from him than all the resident insiders on all the Spurs forums. I would guess that it will be a while until the Spurs trust another reporter to that extent.

From the Ranger to the National.

CONGRATS TO JOHNNY, awesome, to hear his take on nBA levels

Buck Harvey is one of the best sports columnist out there. great writer.

I wish he went national instead of Johnny.

Either Way, whats in the San Antonio Water for god sakes.

Im happy for everyone.

I don't think it pays anywhere close to that to start out. Johnny Blaze probably knows for sure.
