Poor Tony. It is the story of his life, he is always making perfect assists just so his teammates miss. He has that luck wherever he plays, no good enough scoring players around him on the Spurs or on the NT. He must be wandering why the Spurs front office does not do something to get him some good players, like the Suns did with Nash or that other fellow Kidd who they always seem surrounded by excellent shooters.

And the last two points of Parker above Dirk !! funny...

From EuroBasket

" Hero: There's a few to choose from - Tony Parker, Pietrus or Kirksay. Parker wasn't on the court when the other two spearheaded France's game-changing second quarter run, but he did lead the way with 23 points. To a certain extent it was the playmaker who put the final nail in Germany's coffin with big plays in the third quarter and early in the final period when Dirk Bauermann's men looked like they might still stand a chance. However, Pietrus' and Kirksay's timely baskets really dealt a big blow to Germany's confidence at the opportune time. So joint honours to all three players. "

France beats Germany; Lithuania reaches quarters with win over Italy at European championship
France beats Germany; Lithuania reaches quarters with win over Italy at European championship

By PAUL LOGOTHETIS, Associated Press Writer
September 8, 2007

MADRID, Spain (AP) -- Tony Parker scored 23 points and France defeated Germany 78-66 Saturday, moving closer to a place in the quarterfinals of the European basketball championship.

Florent Pietrus and Tariq Kirksay both added 12 points for France, while Dirk Nowitzki led Germany with 28 points.

"In the preliminary round we didn't move the ball well, and sometimes just watched Tony Parker make plays," Pietrus said. "The players were more active and ... it was easier for us to score and win the game."

Lithuania and Slovenia reached the European championship quarterfinals after winning second-stage games in Group F Saturday.

Unbeaten Lithuania needed a hard-fought 79-74 win over Olympic runner-up Italy, while Slovenia kept a perfect record with a 66-51 victory over Turkey.

Toronto Raptors center Radoslav Nesterovic led Slovenia with 13 points. NBA players Hidayet Turkoglu and Mehmet Okur scored 17 and 14 points, respectively, for Turkey.

Both Germany and France played a high-tempo game at the start, but back-to-back unsportmanlike fouls on Steffen Hamann and Patrick Femerling allowed France to take a 21-13 lead.

Leading 26-20, France used a 15-2 run, ignited by Pietrus' 3-pointer, to push ahead 43-30 in the second.

Nowitzki carried his struggling team into halftime, hitting a fade-away 3 at the buzzer to narrow the deficit to 47-39. The Dallas Mavericks forward had 19 points by halftime and Parker led France with 11.

After Germany cut the deficit to 47-45 with 8:13 left in the third quarter, France closed the period on a 15-4 run and Parker's shooting was near perfect in the final quarter. Nowitzki was held to four field goals in the second half.

"Every time we needed to make a play on either end we couldn't," Germany coach Dirk Bauermann said. "It was one of those games."

The loss leaves Germany needing wins in its final two Group F matches to guarantee a place in the elimination round.

A minute's silence in memory of Italian opera singer Luciano Pavarotti was the only thing that could quiet the Lithuanian fans all night, as its team went up early and led most of the way before closing out the victory.

Rimantas Kaukenas led Lithuania with 22 points while Andrea Bargnani had 15 for Italy. Lithuania also controlled the boards throughout the game, outrebounding Italy 44-29.

In Group E, Russia has six points, one more than both Spain and Croatia. Greece and Israel are tied with four and Portugal has three. Four teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals, which begin Thursday.

On Sunday, world champion Spain plays Russia, which has already qualified for the quarterfinals. Croatia and Greece meet in a match that could determine which of the two advances and Israel plays Portugal.

France Cruise Past Germany
By Simon Wilkinson
08 September 2007
Turning Point: France used a 15-2 run in the second quarter to turn a 28-28 tie into a 43-30 lead. Florent Pietrus and Tariq Kirksay each had five points in the spurt as Les Bleus took their first double-digit lead of the game.

Hero: There's a few to choose from - Tony Parker, Pietrus or Kirksay.

Statistics: Germany - in particular Dirk Nowitzki - couldn't buy a three-pointer. As a team they shot four for 17 with their star player going two for nine. Very uncharacteristic.

Just a few thoughts about the game:

First: Congrats France!

I was really happy to see how Tony played. He looked really great. He took good care of the pace and took good shots, he was a real leader. It was also great to see that he was able to knock down the 3.

That said, I disagree with those who say that Dirk choked. France is WAY better than Germany as a team. Besides Dirk and Okulaja the rest of the team is medicore at best. In the first half Dirk could not buy a call (of course it was not the reason they lost). France was better and they deserve to win. But Dirk still leads the tournament in scoring, so he is not really choking, his team just is not that good. If the team advances to the final 8 it will be great for them.

Looking forward to the next games!

Parker's supporting cast is way better than Dirk's one. It's quite amazing to see what Germany is able to do with so little talent around Dirk. Germany being not that bad is too a proof that Dirk is a great player.

About Florent Pietrus : I really like him but I'm not sure that he is good enough to play in nba. He did a good job on Dirk and a player with his profile could really help Spurs as a small ball PF.
He was in the doghouse in Spain for two years and will play with a new team next year. If he has a good season next year, he could try again to play in nba.

Why not? When you see some big shit being in a roster I would pick Pietrus definetly over many players .
Plus, there's Tony in the spurs and we need athletism and defender like him.
I mean you can not say that White is a better player than Pietrus

Even a nba scrub is a good player. End of the bench players, who have played in Europe, were very good players in Europe.
Pietrus is playing well with France NT but hasn't done shit in Spain with Malaga. He spend 3 years in Malaga and has averaged something like 4 points, 3 rebounds. He must first have a good season in Spain if he wants to draw the interest of a nba team.

I agree on Dirk, he didn't choked. France was just too strong for Germany.

As I said the problem with Pietrus is that he is too short for a PF. Since he can't really play SF I don't see him in the NBA. Even in Europe I think it is a reason why he didn't play much in Malaga.
To have a great season he should play in France where the game is different (most PF are 6'6-6'8 players) but I guess the price is too high for any French team.

Spanoulis buzzer beater. He drive full court two crossovers, ankle breaker then pullup 26 footer for win. Spurs needs to bring him back.
