well if you're a Spurs fan, I'd say up one. If you're a Lakers fan, and have Derek Fisher and a shit load of luck, then down one with the ball doesn't sound so bad... :(

As a Spurs fan? Is this even a question? Up one, lean on the 'D' that you play so well.

Down one with the ball. It's more exciting.

Is it just me or are the threads just getting dumber and dumber?

Kinda stupid question.

I would give the ball to Tim Duncan.

Well actually I think most teams would rather be down one. I believe in exception to Dallas and Detroit, most teams don't trust that defense.

Obviously if I'm the Spurs I'm up one ready to clinically put your shit down again.

Spurs fans seem mostly united.

Up one on D.

Defense is our bread and butter.

From a purely statistical point of view you'd want to be up one since most players shoot less than 50% from the field.

Beyond that, if you're the Spurs you have one of the best defenses in the league so you go with your strength.

Beyond that, if you can shorten the time by knocking the ball out of bounds or simply by pressuring the offense into more passing at the perimeter, you increase the odds that the pressure and shooting percentages will work in your favor.

Up one on D. However, it does seem (to my traumatized memories perhaps?) that the Spurs often lose in those conditions... That lead often evaporates... :(

I'd rather be up one with .4 seconds left. You can't make a shot in .4, can you?

It doesn't matter what your D is like. This isn't just a Spurs answer. Or even an answer only good D teams would take. This is common sense because the question puts 20 seconds on the clock.

Up one back on D with 20 seconds left, most of the outcomes favor you:

1) You get the stops till time expires (they get multi shots with offensive rebounds)
2) You get the stop and get the rebound (they foul you, etc)

And even if they do score, most teams don't want just one shot at the win if down one. They want to get a good look and get the lead OR at least get a good look but have enough time to foul and get the ball back at most down 3 with still a chance to tie. So, they won't run out the clock most of the time since they want that second chance if they fail to score.

3) If you're going back on D up one, even if they score, they likely will leave time on the clock to get a crack at the win.

I'd rather be up one with .4 seconds left. You can't make a shot in .4, can you?

You can't ; I've watched every replay of this shot a million times, and it wasn't good; of course, the super refs know much better than us :rolleyes

I applaud you for having the stomach to watch that shot millions of times.

Up one on D. Usually if a team has 20 seconds left they won't shoot a buzzer beater, so even if the team messed up on D they would still have a chance at the win on offense.

If you are down 1 then if you make it without letting the clock run out their would still be pressure on your defense like the first scenario. If you miss and the other team secures the rebound you are in trouble, and most teams would not like to shoot with one second left if they have a full shot clock because there is always a chance at a miss.

Who has the ball?

Twenty seconds left in the game… Would you rather have the ball down one, or be up one on D?

That is part of the question.

I would rather be up 1 playing D.

what the hell kind of question is this?

who would rather be down with 20secs then up, especially with the Spurs being the best defensive team during the past decade

As I said, DOWN ; with 20 seconds left and Robert Horry, it's enough for Spurs to win a game.

Our great D doesn't necessarely guarantee a big late stop; of course, Bowen has made some great decisive blocks (Billups, Dirk), but remember Fish .4 or Manu's stupid foul??

Bread and butter is my bread and butter. But after bread and butter, a good D is number two.
