View Full Version : Help wiping out crashed hard drive

I have a 500 gig external hard drive, I tripped over the cord and it smashed to the group. I want to get rid of it but I need to know how I can possibly wipe everything out so nobody can somehow find it and retrive the info.

I know its un repairable (but possibly someone who really knows their stuff could somehow fix it) because when I turn it on I hear a mechanical "whir" of something struggling to move and my laptop doesn't even see that anything is connected to the USB.

Good times!

sounds like the easiest thing to do... smash it into pieces!

Well, it could still be under warranty so I might want to try to keep it intact.

But I would rather smash it than leave info on there.

IMHO, you should destroy it beyond all repair........or give it to Mouse.

Well you need to be able to see it to format it, at least that would help a lot.

If it's under warranty then send it back, nobody gives a shit about the information that's on your hard drive...

If it's not under warranty, hit it with a hammer...

You need to find someone with a degausser aka bulk eraser.

I would bet that the actual HD is fine, that it's the actual enclosure it's in that needs help.

You can buy an enclosure pretty cheap if that's the case.

I can transfer all your old data to another HD or to 100 4gb DVDs for 20.00 dollars.

If you decide to bust open your external HD it will look like a regular HD inside.

go to Altex and buy one of these for 26.00 dollars.

Place the black end to your HD and the USB to your Laptop and you can still use your HD for many months. Or just transfer the data to somewhere else.

Get a microwave oven you don't want and have some good times! (but do it in a open field)

He could just throw it in a fire, but that's too easy...

=Actually you would have to drill more than one hole and it would have to go across the ceramic disc. If you leave at least 1/16th of an inch of free disc space data can be retrieved.

I have seen data being retrieved from a partial ceramic disc. It was only 1/2 long and pizza slice shaped. This man cut his HD disc into 4 slices. But the chances of anyone at the city dump with the technology to begin to do any of those retrieval type projects is very slim.

The best way is to open the case and soak it in some sort of acid or use Polyurethane. The chemicals they use to remove the varnish/Polyurethane will ruin most data.=

I have a low-level formatter you can use. Give me a URL or FTP site to upload it to...

One day you may have a lot of financial information you don't exactly want to blindly throw away in the trash.
