Wifi web-browsing, great sound, 160 GB, portable DVR, touch screen.....

Best of all, it's around the same price as an iPod. If you're looking for an alternative...

I have an Archos AV500 and it is simply amazing. Tons of people stop me to ask me what it is.

I've seen that, how is the web-browser? Uses Opera right?

Yup. It's an extra $30, but it works BETTER than an iPod. It actually supports FLASH websites.

Well here's the thing - you can't really compare a flash based player, with a hard drive player. There's no comparable product to the Touch right now - unless you want to mention the Cowon D2.

I expected an alternative to the ipod to be cheaper....not more expensive.

Fuck that.

looks like a nice video player, but i don't really care to watch video on my iPod. i use it to output video sometimes, but only on trips when i want to take some of my daughter's shows for her to watch. i mainly use my 80GB for music and a portable HDD.

its neat, but I like the size of the ipod better. Especially if I just want it mostly for music or occasional web browsing

Are you kidding? It's relatively close in price, and the top model has ten TIMES the capacity of the iPod. How many movies are you going to be able to store on that pretty screen with 16 GB?

10x the capacity, it's a portable DVR, and it does everything an iPod does*. I think that's worth the slight increase in price.

Besides, the 30 GB model is the same price as the iPod 8 GB.

*You know, except for downloading music from Starbucks.

And why not? They are both purporting themselves to do the same things.

And yes, the iPod is better looking and thinner. You still can't fit one into your jeans pocket -- unless you want to really risk damaging a $300+ device.

Because, a HD based player is bound to fail if you do any type of movement that could cause the disk head to mess up a sector. Running with a HD MP3 player will reduce it's life to a year, sometimes two.

It all depends what you want to use it for - myself, I'd rather have one of the new EEE laptops for $250 and a small flash mp3 player instead of a Touch or the Archos.

If you're going to be sitting in place for awhile, the Archos/iPod video are good. But for someone who wants a joint player that does video and they can still use it functionally for running - the Touch is where it's at for them.

I don't have an ipod or any portable media player, but if I did, all I'd want is music. I don't need all this extra bullshit that I'll never use and pay a lot more for. This is just the typical bullshit that I hate about our technology...It's the same case with cell phones.

Because cameras weren't enough for people, people need a bunch of other bullshit on a phone that just isn't necessary. It's great for the companies that are making money on people who apparently need all this added junk on their cell phone. But they;re really making people look dumb.

it may not fit in your jeans, but my iPhone fits in all of my pockets just fine. :rolleyes

And my AV500 fits in most of my pockets as well.

My, you must think so highly of yourself to purport what other people want and need. Considering hundreds of thousands of iPods have been sold already, it seems like quite a few people are willing to watch TV.

Why do you want music on your phone anyway? That's so utterly pointless. I mean really, no one should ever want music on their phone. That's what CD PLAYERS are for. Anyone who doesn't use a CD player is a moron.

See what I did there?

A good, rational response. And I agree to an extent, but I have to wonder how many people are buying their iPod as an exercise device. It seems too large for something you would want to take jogging (and yes, this means the Archos is too).

The point of this thread was to offer an alternative. That's all, people. :)

Personally, I'm going to get this:

http://images.creative.com/iss/images/corporate/artwork/lowres_zen.jpg

http://www.creative.com/products/mp3/zen/

Expandable, SDHC compatable - that means up to an additional 32GBs (cards should come at Christmas.) Fabulous 24bit screen, 2.5" big - comes in 4gb, 8gb, and 16gb variants. Supports Xvid and DIVX - huge plus. Only downside is no video out, but I have a DVD player, I rarely burn movies anymore. All in the size of a credit card.

And I like my AV500, because it's difficult to carry a portable DVD player or a laptop in my front pants pocket. Just saying.

On a whim I picked up the 4gb 3g Nano last night.

Wafer thin and looks much better in person than in pictures. SQ is pretty good, however watching on videos is best only for short spurts.

All in all, not bad for $149. Obviously though, a different use than the AV series.
