Report: Griese to start Sunday against Lions

Rex Grossman's latest meltdown reportedly will have him standing on the sidelines this week.

The Chicago Tribune, citing an anonymous source, reported on its Web site that backup Brian Griese will replace Grossman as the starting quarterback when the Bears face the Lions.

Chicago returns to practice on Wednesday to prepare for Sunday's game at Detroit.

Grossman threw three interceptions as the Chicago Bears fell to the Dallas Cowboys 34-10 on Sunday night.

Grossman ranks 23rd in the league with 500 yards, has a 45.2 rating and is 47-of-89 (52.8 percent) with a league-leading six interceptions and just one touchdown.

A Pro Bowl pick with Denver in 2000, Griese has passed for 16,564 yards, but has also been released three times -- by the Broncos, Miami and Tampa Bay.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

The only thing Griese might do well is refrain from giving his defense short fields all game. He can't make all the throws and will be checking down and throwing 5 yd ins, outs, and hooks all game. Those mofos are in trouble because they have the D but no QB.

Please be good Griese so Cedric can get some openings.

Brian Griese is average at best.

Rex Grossman will be a backup on another team next year. By 2009, he will be out of football.

Ha, I was going to post the exact same thing when I saw the thread.

Griese just can't be any worse than Grossman. I saw on ESPN today that Rex has the worst QB rating in the game since that Bears/Cardinals game last year.

Soon Bears fans will be calling to put Sexy Rex back in. there is a reason why Griese has never been able to hold a starting job .

average at best will improve that team dramatically.

I agree. Both the Ravens and the Bucs were able to win Super Bowls with quarterbacks of about Griese's caliber and a fierce defense. At this point, Chicago could greatly benefit from someone who can simply manage the offense, and not lose the game for them. Griese will throw for a higher percentage, which will keep both the clock and the chains moving. They don't need him to be All Pro, just give the defense a chance to rest and recharge.

I have to wonder why this didn't happen after he was Indy's 12th man in the Super Bowl. Did the Bears organization really think he would improve? I don't think Griese is the answer for Chicago but he should be able to keep them in games at least. Looked decent in the preseason but granted it was still preseason.

The Bears are going in the tank. Their defense is too beat up and Griese is no better than Grossman.

That very well may be the case, especially with all the injuries on defense.

But they play the Lions this week, who are always, and I mean always, a cure-all for ailing teams.

See week 3 for reference.

He's definitely worse than Rex. Guy completed just 51% of his passes and average just a little over 100 yards per game in total passing which is absolutely pathetic. Dude also had 18 turnovers to 9 tds. He was one of the worst I have ever seen.

they need more at the QB position. Rex actually played decent in the playoffs last year. Griese might just be barely good enough for Chicago to do well.

I'd say no. It's the Super Bowl.

Somebody didn't watch the Super Bowl.
no I did, but I watched more than just that. Playoffs consist of more than just one game. Against the Saints and Seattle, Rex played pretty well. Also, in the Superbowl he was sharp throwing intermediate routes, but for some reason the OC for Chicago decided to go deep and Rex botched most of those passes.

I'm not defending Rex, because the guy has lost confidence and needs to sit. However, to say Kyle Orton who's one of the worst QB to ever play the game is better is a joke. BTW, the team never rallied behind Kyle, they knew they had no other options and couldn't wait for Rex to get healthy to send Kyle down to 3rd string where he barely belongs.

Griese is a stop gap, but Chicago has some major issues and it's not only at the QB position. They certainly need a premium RB and more help in the secondary.

The playoffs are all post-season,non-exhibition games. The Super Bowl, while an event unto itself, still counts as part of the playoffs.
