View Full Version : Are the suns done seriously contending?

First of all they trade away one person that could defend Duncan well in Kurt Thomas....

And now Marion goes into the super-primadona mode.

In my opinion any trade they make it screws them over. They can not get good value back for Marion. (Odom, Kirilenko,... not good enough)

AND if they dont trade him their chemistry goes flying out the window.

Beside that Steve Nash does not have more than 2 years left on the top level. I love Nash but hate pretty much everyone else on their team together with all their trolls around here.

All in all a good day for Spurs fans! :fro :hungry:

It's a screwed up situation. I actually like the Suns a lot, and I hate to see an idiot like Marion tear down a title contender. Having three pretty evenly-matched title contenders in the west is a great thing for the league.

As for the original question, yeah, they're done if they lose Marion for Kirilenko or Odom, or if Marion stays and doesn't shut the hell up.

Are you telling me that a starting lineup of...

Nash
Raja
Grant
Odom
Amare

Doesn't bother you a little? Especially given the fact that Odom is more of a force against the Spurs than Marion?

The Suns might lose a couple games more in the regular season. But if Odom (I really doubt Kirilenko is coming here, no way the Suns trade Marion to an already stacked Jazz team) is ready for the playoffs, the Suns are going to be formidable.

I like the Suns team with Odom....they would be a lot better half court team....with Odom holding it down on the lower block it would work.

Why would anyone be afraid of a team with less athleticism, less rebounding, more injury prone players, and *gasp* even less defense than we thought was humanly possible for a team to play?

We should etch this in stone somewhere, come back to it at the end of the year, and see who was right.

We become slightly less athletic, and our defense does take a hit. But Odom is 3 inches taller than Marion, averages approximately the same amount of rebounds as Marion, is a better playmaker, and can create his own shot.

Ha...a better question would be "Will the Suns start off perfect in the month of November". Looking at their schedule, there won't be a single game where they won't be heavily favored to win until late December when they head to Texas to play San Antonio and Dallas.

Also...the word via local sports radio is that the coaching staff is grinning ear to ear after watching Grant Hill in informal workouts these past couple of weeks. They think he's going to be a major contributor this season.

I think there's a ten percent chance Marion is traded. And a trade for Lamar Odom would probably help them against the Spurs. Marion helps them more in the regular season but Odom is a better playoff performer. Either way, should be an interesting season.

Overall, yes that lineup does look good.

But you gotta consider also that with this lineup, Phoenix is gonna hope more than ever that San Antonio and Dallas meet up early in the playoffs before they face either team.

Marion's versatility on defense, capable of playing defense against Parker and against Nowitzki, will most definitely not be matched by Odom. Should this trade occur, Phoenix is gonna wind up with slightly worse matchups against both teams. And as shown in these recent playoffs, matchups can mean everything.

Overall, I don't think Marion is going anywhere. And I don't think his presence will affect chemistry as badly as most of you think.

Difficult to tell at this point, though.

That's just it. The Suns haven't been a contender since 2005, if you could even call them contenders back then. They had a healthy and more dominant Amare and a slightly younger Nash. But that was the end of it. They've been shit since then. They got blown out 4-1 in the WCF's by the NBA Champion Spurs.

The Suns not winning a championship shouldn't be seen as a huge shock or disappointment: They were never contenders to begin with, and if they ever were, it was 2005 at best.

Obviously you missed the point of my post. I'm not just talking about Odom. The team as a whole. Grant plays no defense and is always hurt. Trading away Kurt Thomas was trading away their only decent post defender. If they trade Marion, that is even LESS defense, less athleticism, and a player who plays lazy 75% of the time, as opposed to Marion who always plays hard. And he is not nearly as good of a rebounder as Marion. Odom is definitely more talented and a better shot creator and ball handler than Marion, but that lazy play is going to kill the Suns. The Suns need that 120% effort that Marion gives them every night. It will be a much bigger loss than you would think, if you guys lost Marion.

I'm aware of what Marion brings to the table. I love the guy.

But the loss of Marion (not a complete loss, either, if Odom fills that hole) isn't going to bankrupt our team, especially with Nash, Amare, Bell, Diaw and Barbosa still in the lineup. As for Grant Hill, if he can contribute more than James Jones, I'll be happy.

I'm not saying it will bankrupt your team, but you won't get any better, especially against teams like San Antonio or Dallas. The matchups you guys have, and the ability to outrun and overwhelm us with athleticism is what give you guys a chance to beat us. Losing Marion will be a HUGE hit in the run and gun game, as well as the matchup battle. I think the Suns would be very stupid to trade Marion, as I do not think they will have much more time to win a title, because Nash is getting old and breaking down more. This may be their last legit chance, IMO.

Contend for playoffs? Yea, no doubt. Contend to go deep in the playoffs? Possibly. Title? Uhh... no. They are worse defensively, worse at rebounding, and won't be able to run like they used to either. They didn't win a title before such changes that may or may not happen, and with Nash getting older, and all other circumstances, I really don't see them being nearly as serious of contenders if they get rid of Marion.

I personally dont even think about the Suns if Spurs go into the playoffs with good health...

The one team that worries me way more than the Suns at this moment are the JAZZ-if they get Marion in place of AK.

Williams-Marion-Boozer would be way more dangerous to the Spurs than Nash-AK-Amare.

Deron showed signs of being a dominant player in the playoffs. If he develops even more they become a threat to the Spurs. (if they get Marion)

If Odom goes to the Suns their defense officially becomes non existant. :drunk And AK would fit in much worse than Marion.

If the Suns lose Marion they would be taking a big risk. I really don't think they will trade him. They would lose a lot of their run and gun style that revolves around Nash and Marion. Also, if they got someone like Kirilenko or Odom, they would only have one good perimeter defender (Raja Bell.) How would they defend teams like the Spurs or Mavs who have multiple perimeter scoring threats? Last year Marion defended Parker most of the time, with Bell on Ginobili. Without Marion the Suns can't stop Duncan or Parker.
