A massive hunt for a federal convict is under way in Zavala County after a man escaped last night in Crystal City.

State, federal and local authorities are searching for Vicente Hernandez Jaimez, 29, who escaped the Crystal City Correctional Center about 10:30 p.m. Thursday, said Fernando Karl, assistant chief of the U.S. Marshal's office in San Antonio.

Hernandez, of Mexico, somehow entered the facility's air ducts and made it to the roof, where he overpowered a female guard and took her shotgun, Karl said. He then fled into the brush, east of the center on U.S. 83, north of Crystal City.

No shots were fired and the guard was not injured. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Hernandez recently was convicted of armed carjacking in Austin and sentenced to more than 30 years in prison. He previously had been convicted of entering the country illegally near Del Rio.
