Spurs will have 2007 2nd rd draft pick Marcus Williams, ex-Jayhawk Keith Langford, Anthony Lever-Pedroza/Oregon, Darius Washington/Memphis and James Lang/UNC in training camp.

I say give the 15th spot to the best performer/player/system guy over the next 4 weeks. Spurs don't need help at any position and guys 13-15 will not play this year. Thoughts?

NBA Comparison: Rod Strickland

Strengths: Tough nosed lead guard with excellent speed and quickness ... Gets a step on his man and he's gone ... Tough to contain due to his ability to get by defenders and into the paint ... Tremendous finisher, very good at scoring around the basket ... Steps up in clutch situations, doesn't cave under pressure ... Good ball handler, strong one on one skills ... Feisty competitor, plays with a chip on his shoulder ... Plays with a lot of attitude ... Very passionate, as witnessed by his reaction after he missed the two free throws keeping the Tigers out of the 2005 NCAA tournament ... Gets to the line well and shoots at a solid clip (just under 80%) ... Has good body strength ... Decent vision and passing skills ... Has explosiveness, but rarely shows it in game situations ...

Weaknesses: Still not the all around floor general that he needs to be for success on the next level ... Decision making can be questionable at times ... Lacks great range on his shot ... Struggled shooting the ball in his sophomore season, his overall statistics dropped from his freshman year ... Must improve his shot selection ... Assist to turnover ratio is very concerning at below 1-1 ... Must get a lot better at protecting the ball ... Defensive intensity and effort can improve ... Developed a reputation as being a bit of a hot head in high school ... Not much of a rebounder ...

Height: 6-4 / 1,93
Weight: 215 lbs. / 97,5 kg.

Overview
A slashing guard/forward who can pour in points in a hurry... Has steadily improved his three-point shooting during his tenure in Lawrence to become more of an outside threat... A smooth lefty who is deceptively quick and has an uncanny knack for getting to the rim, even in traffic... One of the best leapers on the squad... Solid at defending on the perimeter... An impressive rebounder for his size... A reliable free throw shooter... A clutch performer, Langford often saves his best games for the biggest stage, as he has been named to three NCAA all-tournament teams.

He was selected with the 19th pick of the 2nd round (48th overall) of the 2003 NBA Draft by the New Orleans Hornets, but was waived in December of that year after back injuries kept him sidelined and after GM Bob Bass proclaimed that Lang did not show "the potential to be put on the active roster."

Perhaps to push Beno.

Hopefully one of them is good enough to push him off the team entirely.

Not a terribly inspiring bunch. Lang (if it's not the UNC guy) is a tremendous athlete but insists on staying fat. His development will remained stalled until he takes care of that. Washington screwed over the Toros last season by taking a deal from Italy the day before training camp started.

Lang's D-League stats. (http://www.nba.com/dleague/playerfile/james_lang/index.html)

Langford's Lega Due stats. (http://www.legaduebasket.it/player/?id=LAN-KEI)

Washington's Greek A1 stats. (http://www.galanissportsdata.com/basketball/mena1/season2006_07/a1teamrs.asp?t=06)

The ULEB site is screwed up, but I found in a December 9 interview that he averaged 13.0ppg, 2.3apg & 2.3spg three games into the ULEB competition for PAOK.

Washington's Czech Federation stats. (http://www.cbf.cz/supp/plrprof.php?d=172&p=3120)

Lever-Pedroza's FIBA Americas Tournament stats. (http://www.2007lasvegas.fibaamericas.com/pages/eng/fe/07/fibaAmer/men/teamPlay/play/p/competitioncode//eventid/3965/langlc/en/playernumber/44381/roundid/3965/searchstr//season//teamnumber/328/fe_teamPlay_playStat.html)

Having trouble finding anything else for Lever-Pedroza last season.

Not a terribly inspiring bunch.
The "inspiring" ones probably want to compete for an active roster spot, not a "maybe" 15th spot. :)

Exactly. But that's how things go for a vet team with a full roster. Fortunately we're trying out guys for two teams -- any of these guys would be fine on the Toros (Lang's rights were picked up by the Utah Flash in the expansion draft).

I never thought of it that way...but you're exactly right. If one of these guys shows some decent play, but doesn't seem to warrant a contract, we could always try and get them to go to the Toros. With a year to analyze them in our farm system we can make a more educated decision next year regarding whether to cut and run or continue to observe a certain player. Nice.
