Elson will wear facemask

Spurs center Francisco Elson is going to have to give his coach, Gregg Popovich, a lesson in pop culture.
Elson, who underwent surgery on Aug. 30 to repair a fractured orbital bone around his left eye, has been cleared for all activities when the Spurs begin training camp today at their practice facility. He will have to wear a protective facemask, which prompted Popovich to compare him to an infamous goalie mask-wearing character from a popular 1980s horror film.
Forgive Popovich, a devotee of independent and documentary films, for getting his horror film villains mixed up.
Asked if Elson would be ready to go when camp officially opens on Tuesday, Popovich said, "He's going to be Freddy (Krueger) for a while. Other than that, he's going to be fine."
In fact, Jason Voorhees was the goalie-mask wearing villain of "Friday the 13th," while Freddy Krueger was the villain in "Nightmare on Elm Street."
Elson suffered the eye injury in late August while playing for the Dutch national team in a preliminary game before the European championships.
