His splash in the race has been the biggest dud since Geraldo dug into Al Capone's vaults on live TV.

Fred is busy courting the lunatic fringe....

Fred 'he had em' Thompson.....

Newton, Ia. — Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson said today he was certain former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction prior to the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, a point of contention in the 4 1/2 years since the war began.

“We can’t forget the fact that although at a particular point in time we never found any WMD down there, he clearly had had WMD. He clearly had had the beginnings of a nuclear program,” the former Tennessee senator told an audience of about 60 at a Newton cafe.

...
Thompson later said he was referring Saddam’s attack on Kurdish northern Iraq with banned weapons in the 1980s.

Subdued Thompson Stirs Few Sparks on Stump
By ADAM NAGOURNEY
NEVADA, Iowa, Oct. 3 — Twenty-four minutes after he began speaking in a small restaurant the other day, Fred Thompson brought his remarks to a close with a nod of his head and an expression of thanks to Iowans for allowing him to “give my thoughts about some things.”

Then he stood face to a face with a silent audience.

“Can I have a round of applause?” Mr. Thompson said, drawing a rustle of clapping and some laughter.

“Well, I had to drag that out of you,” he said.

Fred is a 80s kind of guy. He was recently asked about Iran and in the middle of his answer this sentence spilled from his lips:

I’m afraid that the Soviet Union & China are not ever going to do anything that’s going to hurt them that badly but we need to ratchet those up if at all possible.

Uh, Fred, the Soviet Union collapsed like 16 years ago. :smokin

Fred was notorious for being grumpy about after hours Senate votes. Imagine what would happen if we were actually attacked in the middle of the night.

"Can't we deal with this in the morning?"

Fred Thompson decides to become another stick-your-head-in-the-sand Republican....

GREER, S.C. — Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson said Tuesday he's skeptical of a new report that Iran halted its nuclear weapons program four years ago and questioned the United States' ability to gather intelligence.

"I hope that they are accurate with this assessment, but right now, I don't have the confidence in our own intelligence capabilities to make that assessment," the former Tennessee senator said after speaking to dozens of supporters at a gun shop in this early voting state. "One thing that crosses my mind is that this is information that the Iranians have put out, that they want us to kind of relax a little bit."

The new national intelligence estimate found that Iran stopped its development of a nuclear bomb in the fall of 2003, largely because of international scrutiny and pressure. The finding is in stark contrast to the comparable intelligence estimate two years ago, when U.S. agencies believed Tehran was determined to develop a nuclear weapons capability.

Thompson's remarks seemed to echo President Bush, who said Iran remained dangerous and the report should be a warning sign that the nation had a weapons program.

No word from Thompson on how our intelligence agencies got as bad as he says they are....
