Thieves Steal From Dying Hit-And-Run Victim

MESA, Ariz. -- An elderly man was struck by a hit-and-run driver and as he lay dying, thieves made off with his groceries.

Mesa police said the victim was waiting for a bus after grocery shopping Tuesday evening.

Witnesses said the driver of a pickup swerved off the road and onto the sidewalk in west Mesa.

The driver fled the scene after crashing through the bus stop, police said.

Boro Mitrovich said he was sitting close to the old man when the victim was hit. "He didn't even know what happened," said Mitrovich, 51, of Mesa, who dove out of the way. "The old man took the brunt of it," he said.

The elderly man was thrown across a parking lot, landing in front of a restaurant and a pawn and loan shop.

It was there that witnesses said people in the parking lot "began picking up the groceries and taking them," said Mesa police spokesman Detective Steve Berry.

As he was checking on the victim, Mitrovich said his groceries were also stolen. "One minute it's on the ground, the next minute it's gone," Mitrovich said.

If caught, the people who stole the groceries could face theft charges, Berry said.

Police, using a helicopter, tracked the driver of the pickup truck to an apartment complex less than two miles from the hit-and-run scene.

By the time police got there, the driver had ditched the truck and fled, Berry said.

The front of the truck was mangled and missing a headlight. A white plastic shopping bag was still stuck to the grill.

Police were interviewing residents at the apartment complex late Tuesday trying to get a description of the driver, but they did not have a suspect, Berry said.

The driver likely will face felony charges of leaving the scene of a fatal crash, Berry said.

Police didn't release the identity of the victim.

If the initial poster had just left the words "Suns" and "Fans" out of the title you may have been able to pull it off. Otherwise unnecessary inflammatory misplaced rhetoric.

That was cold blooded however what the looters did. Sure hope they catch the hit and run driver.

Don't suns fans live in Arizona?

I don't see how this post is lame simply because I can imagine suns fans doing that type of nonsense so.........

This thread gets my approval.

Anyway, this was a lame attempt at humor. Someone got hurt/robbed and you make some weird sweeping generalization about the people/fans of the area.

No big deal, I get what you are trying to do, but it was just lame.

I can go pull 100 news stories about thieves, murders, rapists, child molesters in San Antonio and make some statements and ridiculously apply them to Spurs fans too.

SAPD reports 11 homicides in 17 days

A spate of killings has left 11 people dead in 17 days, authorities said, the city's most violent streak in more than a year.

Since Sept. 15, the slayings have occurred with alarming precision, many of them just hours apart. Men and women, including several older than 50, have been found shot, stabbed and strangled. Most recently, Maria Elizabeth Campos, 42, was discovered early Tuesday inside her burning apartment, her throat slit.

The recent rash of slayings brought this year's homicide count to 102, just 17 fewer than the number recorded in 2006, putting the city on pace to surpass last year's total, the highest number in more than a decade.

San Antonio police said there doesn't appear to be a trend or connection to the wave of killings.

"We're dealing with a spike ... in violent crime culminating in murder," San Antonio police spokesman Sgt. Gabe Trevino said. "A lot of cases are random acts of violence that are very difficult to prevent."

Of the 102 slayings this year, a figure that includes the fatal shooting of Detective Mario Moreno, nearly half have been cleared, said San Antonio police Lt. Joseph MacKay.

The most homicides in one year — 229 — were recorded in the Alamo City in 1993.

In the last decade, San Antonio has tallied only two years with more than 100 reported homicides: 2006 and 2007, according to the city's Web site.

The recent rash of homicides is similar to a spree last June in which 12 people were killed in a 16-day span.

This year's spate began Sept. 15 when Ismael Garcia, 36 was shot on the city's West Side after he left a car as an argument broke out between two women. The next day, Antonio Alonzo Hernandez, 38, was stabbed in the neck, face and body in the restroom of a Las Palapas restaurant in the 2900 block of Blanco Road; he died nine days later at University Hospital.

The homicide streak also included the Sept. 21 slaying of Moreno, who was shot in the head during a sting at a Northwest Side apartment complex. He was the first on-duty San Antonio police officer killed by gunfire since March 2001.

Nationwide, 59 officers have been fatally shot this year, 21 in Texas. Last year, of the 39 officer slayings, nine were in the state.

In San Antonio, the slaying of Campos early Tuesday was especially tragic and disheartening for family and friends who recently saw Campos turn her life around. Campos, a mother of four, lived on the streets for many years and endured a triple bypass surgery last year. Since then she found God, said Pastor Alfonso Gonzales, adding that she had recently joined the Soldiers of Christ Church band.

"She was very depressed and had a hard life, but she changed a lot," said Gonzales, whose church Campos attended for three years. "She was a survivor."

As TradeManu4Kobe pointed out above, you can make a sweeping generalization similar to this for every major sporting team in existance.

Every thread like this only validates the mindless rants of Suns trolls who claim the Spurs fan base is just as obsessed with badmouthing Phoenix, the Suns and their fans as they are with San Antonio, the Spurs and their fans.

The line has become a bit of a joke, as I've seen several other non-Suns fans using the line, but threads like this prove it true... at least in part.

By the way, I love and appreciate the way the majority of the Spurs fans dismissed this as lame. It's great to see and reaffirms my faith in the board. Like all teams, there are morons who'll push the limits of what's necessary. No fanbase is without flaws. It's great to see those with clout coming down hard on those being stupid.
