Nets sign veteran guard Armstrong

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- The New Jersey Nets signed veteran guard Darrell Armstrong on Friday.

The moves comes two days after Nets backup point guard Marcus Williams had surgery on his right foot. He is expected to miss six to eight weeks.

Armstrong, who was the third oldest player in the NBA at 39 last season, was cut by Indiana earlier this week. He averaged 5.6 points and 2.4 assists in 81 games with the Pacers.

"He is a proven NBA veteran who has the potential to add depth to our backcourt," Nets president Rod Thorn said.

Armstrong has played in 790 career games in 13 seasons with Orlando, New Orleans, Dallas, Indiana, averaging 9.6 points and 4.2 assists.
