Spurs coach Gregg Popovich just did the media corps covering training camp a huge favor. He gave us tomorrow off.
OK, technically, he gave his PLAYERS tomorrow off. But if the Spurs aren't going to be at the practice facility, we're not going to be, either.
The Spurs found out about their Saturday off near the end of Friday's practice (well, except for Robert Horry, who had already been given Friday off as well). Wise move by Popovich, considering there are more 30-somethings on this roster than there were in the actual cast of the TV show "Thirty Something." A day off here or there, Popovich figures, is necessary for keeping the old legs fresh.
Among the happiest for the break was Tim Duncan, who is in his 11th NBA training camp.
"It's always time for a day off," Duncan said, "especially after 10 years in the league."
We don't know how the Spurs plan to spend their surprise free Saturday. We'll be watching the Texas-OU game from the comfort of our living room sofa.
As the new Spurs beat writer, we have no Red River Rivalry prediction. As the former UT beat writer, we say Sooners 35, Longhorns 13.
