The princess was nameless in the early incarnations of Mario Bros. Since she had no name when the movie came out, they wrote the name as daisy for the movie. Later games Nintendo stuck her with the name Princess Peach. There is a Princess Daisy in the Mario franchise but she is only featured in Mario Tennis, Golf, and the Mario party games because they needed another female protagnist to put in the game.

That wasn't neccessarily her name but what she was. She's the princess of those toad guys. That's what I meant by she had no real name, it was more like a title. The first time they mention a name was the launch title Mario 64 when she signs letter Princess Toadstool:Peach.
