over the Patriots on Sunday?
My initial reaction is to take NE because it's been that way for so long...
on the other hand, I've watched NE play this year, and, while I may be in the minority, I'm not impressed. Regardless of the final score last week, they struggled with Cleveland.
Anyone else have a good guess with this game?
GO COWBOYS! :spin
I'm not going to say that NE's success so far is a fluke but their toughest opponents have been the Chargers and Bengals. And that's not really saying much. They can start dreaming about another Super Bowl if they beat the Colts. The AFC is going down to Colts and Pats once again.
I hate the Cowboys and the Pats, and one of them has to lose. :smokin

I think Dallas' defense is definitely better than New Englands, but a big problem for us, and someone else already said this, will be Ben Watson. Personally, I think he is an overrated TE, but the fact is, he will be facing Roy Williams a lot of the time, which just about anyone that is matched up against Roy is a mismatch in favor of the opponent. They better make sure Roy comes with his A-game, or that is going to be a HUGE issue.

It all comes down to pressure. If they can manage to lay Brady on his back all game (whether they sack him or not) they will be able to throw him off his game and make the coverage a lot easier for everyone.

They didn't struggle half as much as Dallas struggled against the Bills. I think NE wins but they don't cover the spread. It will be a close game though.

My good friend who is a Pats fan actually thinks the Pats might lose this one. And he said it will be a relief in a way, to get the loss over with. And he would rather lose to the Cowboys than the Colts.
I agree with him wholeheartedly, I would rather the Pats lose to the Cowboys instead of the Colts, as well. :)

I wouldn't necessarily agree that NE's defense >= Dallas, primarily because while personnel might be about equal, schematically, NE is about as diverse as any defense in the NFL. That allows Belichick to not just vary the looks that he gives to opposing offenses and confuse QB's, but also to invent new schemes tailored to deal with specific problems that certain offenses present. With Harrison back now, the NE secondary should be better as well. It will be interesting to see if Belichick can confuse Romo with disguised coverages and odd fronts -- he's succeeded in the past in confusing Peyton Manning.
I'm also not sure that NE was unimpressive in beating Cleveland -- at least not sure that they were less impressive in beating Cleveland than Dallas was in beating Buffalo. It would certainly appear that NE has much greater reason to be confident that it is playing well at this point than Dallas does; but for a relatively miraculous recovery of an onside kick and a bizarre coverage decision by the Bills in the closing seconds, the Cowboys might well be 4-1 coming into this game.

Dallas has a good shot, mainly because New England won't show everything to a team they might see again in the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, Dallas is gonna have to unload every trick they've got to win this.
And I'd much rather NE lose to Dallas than Indy. Losing to Dallas doesn't mean anything compared to losing to Indy. And if NE loses, I certainly won't be too upset over it, an neither will any Patriots fan. It's just not that big of a game to a Patriots fan.
I can only imagine the Super Bowl-like celebrations of Cowboys fans if they win this game. :lmao week six.
I say New England wins by a TD, but I won't be at all shocked if Dallas gets the W.

Nice assessment, but by now everyone should know that a performance against team A one week has no bearing on a performance against team B the next. Neither the suggested lackluster performance by NE against Cleveland or the obvious lackluster performance by Romo against the Bills (you can't say the team was lackluster as the defense was awesome) have any bearing on this Sunday's game. There are so many factors that go into a football game that it's impossible to predict who will win in a game played by two teams who are very close in talent and performance against almost identically mediocre opposition to this point.

That's ridiculous, Dallas won't have to pull out any tricks. They are going to play their game as will NE, and the team who is able to execute better in all three facets of the game will win. There isn't a huge talent gap between the teams here, this isn't the NCAA.

i'm not talking about trick plays, dumbass. i'm talking about strategies, packages, and plays that NE might be saving for a future date. they aren't going to waste everything they've got on a week 6 matchup. in 2005 the Patriots let the Steelers kick their ass up and down the field in the regular season, they had simple playcalling and let Corey Dillon sit with an "injury". They didn't reveal everything they had to a potential playoff matchup. then in the AFC title game they unloaded everything and kicked Pittsburgh's ass up and down the field.
and i think the talent gap is wide enough that Dallas will have to play incredible in order to win. If both teams bring their A game, New England wins by 10 at least.

I wasn't talking about trick plays, dumbass. Dallas won't have to run any new schemes or variations on anything to beat NE in this game. The same goes for NE. You put far too much emphasis on tricks or gadgets as teams don't save much of anything for the playoffs. If they haven't run a scheme or set all season they won't run it in the playoffs. The games against Pitt weren't due to tricks, Pitt just was the more motivated team and executed better in the regular season and that was reversed in the playoffs.
The talent gap isn't wide at all. If both bring their A game it's still a toss up.

As much as you'd love football to be a bunch of meatheads who just push each other around, and whatever team pushes harder wins, I hate to inform you that there's more to it than that.
There are plenty of documented occasions where New England, among other teams, has had specific plays for specific teams in specific situations. They won't show their entire hand to a team in week 6, especially when they might see them again in the Super Bowl. When you've been a Patriots fan for 15 years, then feel free to tell me how my team does things.

Good god, arguing with you is pointless because you infer all sorts of over the top bullshit based on a very simple response.
Teams do have different packages and schemes that they use or adjust to their competition. I never said they didn't. BUT, they don't typically just start using all sorts of foreign or new schemes that they haven't used all year long when the playoffs come around. I know you'd love for football to be a strictly thinking mans game and akin to chess, but I hate to inform you that when it comes right down to it the team that works harder and executes better wins. The team that doesn't get a ton of penalties, doesn't get a ton of turnovers, executes their blocks, executes their throws, runs their correct routes... wins.

Wade Phillips doesn't have to outcoach Bill Belicheck. His players have to outplay the NE players enough to win the game. It's not that difficult to understand. Even Belichick would tell you that.
Coaching helps put your team in position to win, but they have to execute better than the opposition. Kind of like last year when the Colts executed better than the Patriots. Did Dungy outcoach Belichick? No. His team executed better.

Lets go position by position
QB - Romo < Brady
Brady has the experience, but Romo is the more gifted QB, and a better playmaker. Brady wins, but not by a landslide.
RB - Barber/Jones > Maroney/Faulk
Dallas has more depth here. Dallas wins. Not by much though. Maroney is not to be overlooked.
WR - Owens/Crayton/Hurd =< Moss/Stallworth/Welker
Owens and Moss are about even. Stallworth can't run routes for shit, and Welker is a good #3 reciever, but looks better than he is, because of the amounts of attention that Moss and Stallworth draw from deep coverages. If Dallas had a healthy Terry Glenn, they would defintiely win this one, but for now, New England has this one, but not by a landslide by any means either.
TE - Whitten/Fasano > Watson/Brady
This one is obvious. Whitten alone is far superior.
OL - Dallas = NE
NE has better players on the line, although not by much, and it really doesn't matter as much for Dallas, due to Romo's running ability and ability to move in the pocket to set his blockers up. Therefore this one is a wash.
DL - Dallas = NE
They are pretty much dead even right now, although if NE had Seymour, they have the superior DL.
LB - Spears/Ellis/James/Ware = Vrabel/Thomas/Colvin/Bruschi
Dallas is a little more talented and athletic, while NE is more experienced, but age is a factor. Bruschi and Vrabel have clearly slowed down, and will get eaten alive by Whitten. Colvin is a good rusher, but thats about it. Thomas is well rounded, but heavily overrated by Patriot fans. He hasn't impressed me at all this year. The INT TD that he got was not a result of a good play. It was simply a fucking horrid throw by Phillip Rivers. Give me Demarcus Ware over him any day.
CB - Newman/Henry/Reeves > Samuel/Hobbs/Gay
No question about it.
S - Hamlin/Williams < Roided Harrison/Wilson.
Eugene Wilson sucks, but Harrison is good, despite being a cheater. Roy obviously sucks, although I must say, aside from his first game against the Giants, and the horrible tackle against the Bears, he really has not played bad at all this year, and hasn't gotten beat very much at all. Granted, the Pats have better weapons than they have faced so far, but in the past, even terrible WRs was capable of making Roy look stupid.
To me, they are dead even in terms of all around talent. Although Dallas is clearly dealing with more injuries at the moment.

You do realize that Wade Phillips the actual coach, and not Wade Phillips the retarded tub of man-titties, as voiced by Jub-Jub, will be patrolling the sidelines, right? I think Belichick is the better coach, but the gap isn't that wide. Our coaching staff isn't chopped liver. San Diego's defense has fallen apart with the succession of Phillips to Ted Cottrell, and Jason Garrett will be a head coach somewhere next year.

I don't really get that New England played poorly last week. They won an NFL game by 17 points. They were up 20-0 at the half and held a 27-10 lead relatively late in the 4th quarter. They did give up a late score when Cleveland got a short field opportunity (a punt return that gave them the ball at the +35), but the game was never really in any doubt. I'm sure Patriots' fans would have preferred a win by 30+, a shutout, and flawless execution, but I'm not sure that's the standard by which any team should be judged in assessing its quality -- particularly not in Week 5.
To me, it's scary that a team can play, basically, on cruise control for a half and win that game without ever having faced a real threat.

First off, Bob Sanders is way overrated. He helped a bunch but he singularly doesn't have the ability to turn a defense from "historically bad" to "championship good".
Dungy pulled a page from Belichick's "Idiot's Guide To Head Coaching In The NFL" and stopped showing his entire hand for 16 regular season games. And it worked perfectly.

Personally, I'd make it Brady by a pretty big margin. Joe Montana proved for years that you didn't have to be the most gifted QB in the league to be the best. Only Peyton Manning is in Tom Brady's league when it comes to reading defenses from the pocket, and I'd frankly trust Brady to make the big play sooner than I would trust Manning to do it. Brady is remarkable at spreading the ball and giving him Moss is almost close to unfair in terms of exploiting his ability to pick apart a defense -- he's never really had a big-time vertical threat until now; without a big-time veritcal threat, he's won 3 Super Bowls (and very nearly reached a 4th) and been the best playoff quarterback in football.
I think there's a definite step up from the class in which Romo finds himself and the class that Brady's in (without regard to team success). Brady rarely makes mistakes that cost his team; I'm not sure the same can be said of Romo at this point.

If New England's defense was able to create turnovers, couldn't that have been, at least in part, evidence of the Patriots' defense playing well and confusing a young quarterback? It seems to me that's a pretty big part of the game of football. . . .

The Colts' defense didn't employ any new schemes for the postseason last year, they just ran the ones they were already using better. They executed their coverages and fought off blocks to make tackles better than they had during parts of the regular season. They didn't purposly hold back, they just stepped up their game because it was the playoffs and the level of play increases. It happens in every sport. The Spurs routinely coast until the playoffs before stepping up their intensity. It's not magic, it's playing at a different level because your opponent is of a better caliber, and because a loss and your season is over.
So, what are the big strategy adjustments that Billy uses to outsmart the competition in the playoffs?

:lmao you've spent all this time trashing him and calling him overrated and talking shit about how TO was gonna torch him, and now that he might not play suddenly it's "really bad"???
btw I see him listed as "probable" but again, and I know this is going to blow Whiskey Dog's mind since football is all about playing your best and leaving it all on the field and rah rah rah, but I wouldn't be shocked to see Belichick let Samuel sit this game out simply to give the Patriots another mental edge if the Super Bowl rematch happens.
Yea, I still think T.O. would torch him regardless, but he is still FAR better than Hobbs or Gay. If they are really relying on Hobbs and Gay to hold it down, their secondary is in even deeper shit than I thought. And their safeties are slow as hell. That secondary is going to have some major problems.

I want super Pats fan Mono here to enlighten us:
What are some examples of the schemes or packages that Belicheck busts out only for the playoffs that puts his team over the top against the competition? During their Super Bowl wins, what did they change to get the advantage? What great strategy adjustments did Belichick make?
I know in the playoffs one year, Belichick broke out a 2-man front (against Indy, I think) with 3 or 4 linebackers (depending on down & distance). The scheme challenge came from varying which linebackers or DBs would come down into the box to add to the pass rush while using a variety of under coverages with the remaining linebackers to take away some of the things that the Colts liked to do.
Belichick also devised a scheme that took advantage of the Patriots' defensive physicality in Super Bowl XXXIV (vs. the Rams) to really take the Rams' big-play capability away from them. I'd say that was a great strategy adjustment and that it played a huge role in an undermanned team coming up with a win.

No, you've convinced me. Holding out a healthy Corey Dillon from a game, playing man-to-man against Plaxico Burress and never bringing double coverage, not running a zone blitz ever against a rookie QB.....and then doing the exact opposite in the AFC Championship game....that's not holding anything back during the regular season against the Steelers.....that's just not having the heart to win the game. In the Championship Game, they obviously had the heart, and Shittsburgh didn't.

Hopefully Pat Watkins gets some run in at safety on Moss's side throughout the game. His size could be a huge asset.
Btw Stretch, Marvin Harrison has problems torching Samuels, I dont know if TO will be able to. I think a lot of crossing routes and slants will be more likely.
Both te's in this game will be huge.

If Monday was lack of focus against a terrible team that was basically playing their super bowl, then I like the Cowboys' chances. If Monday was proof that they now have tape on Romo, like his critics have been suggesting, then they should get killed.
You can't discount the Pats' big game experience, but that makes the win last year against the Colts a big stepping stone for the Cowboys. Their defense has shown fundamental improvement, even if they aren't making lots of flashy plays. And the dirtiest player on the field will have a star on his helmet. I wouldn't be surprised if Roy Williams has set 25k aside in advance of this game.

At this point there isn't some big secret about Romo that can be figured out on tape, the Bills didn't even do anything really different than what Romo has seen before. Romo was just off, making the bad decision to force throws into coverage, and didn't take the 5 to 7 yarders in the check downs that the defense was giving him. It's more about Romo continuing to learn from mistakes than anything the defense can do to him.
We should have a VBookie on what quarter Roy will snap the leg of Randy Moss with a horse collar tackle.

Do we really know that? Those guys have gone head-to-head 3 times that I count. In 2003, the Vikings beat the Niners 35-7; Moss had 8-172 and 3 scores while TO had 5-55. In 2004, Philly beat the Vikings 27-16; Moss had 8-69 and a score, while TO had 4-79 and a score. In 2005, Philly beat the Raiders 23-20; Moss had 5-86 while TO had 9-80 and a TD.
In 3 games, TO has 18 catches for 204 yards (11.3 avg) and 2 TD.
In 3 games, Moss has 21 catches for 327 yards (15.6 avg) and 4 TD.

Also, Moss's stats are very inflated by that one game in 2003, which also was the year that San Fran turned into utter garbage, and T.O. started acting like an asshole and gave up on them.

Taking away the 2003 game, the numbers look like this:

Moss: 13-155, TD
And it's not like the 2005 Raiders were somehow a stellar team . . . .

Or is this the whole "he's on my team and I think he's the bestest so he's #1" thing?

Over-rated or not you dont realize that being the only unbeaten in the NFC makes you the BEST team in the NFC. I would pick the Texans over the Cowboys in a game any day, BUT im a fan thats what they do. Would I be making the WRONG pick.......YES but I do realize that.

This is quite possibly the dumbest arguments that homers use.
"If it wasn't for that Ginobili foul, the Spurs would have three-peat"
Yeah, well guess what? It happened. You could use a million "If it wasn't for" scenarios to explain away a loss but it doesn't change the fact that
1. Your team lost
2. Your team sucks
3. You're an idiot

only reason we lost to the texans is becuz we changed qb's during the game
green was doing pretty good before he got hurt
we were moving the ball

what bullshit. We have a old Terrell Owens and a two receivers in Crayton who was a 7th rounder as well as Hurd he was a UD free agent as well as no premier running back. Besides TO, the only other capable very talented offensive pro bowl player is Jason Witten (not to shit on Marion, Hurd, and Crayton). Know wtf you are takling about before opening your mouth.

The Cowboys' pass rush is going to have to play out of their minds or Moss is going to destroy them. Newman has no speed and Reeves has no technique, and Williams is going to be playing close to the line. After Bellicose manufactured some disrespect for his guys, I'm glad I don't have to come up with a game plan for New England.
