Colorado 14ers Notch First Selection in 2007 D-League Draft

Oct 12, 2007 - New York - The Colorado 14ers won the 2007 NBA Development League's draft lottery and will have the first overall selection in the upcoming draft. The lottery took place in Dallas, TX at the League's annual Coaches Conference.

"This is awfully exciting for the organization," said 14ers head coach Joe Wolf. "Last year we were able to grab Mike Harris, Von Wafer and Pooh Jeter with our first three picks. So it's great to have the ability to have three picks in the top 29."

The defending champion Dakota Wizards own the second selection followed by the Albuquerque Thunderbirds, Idaho Stampede, Rio Grande Valley Vipers and Sioux Falls Skyforce.

The draft which will be conducted via conference call, will air live on NBA TV on November 1st beginning with pre-draft coverage at 8 pm EST. Marty Blake, the NBA's Director of Scouting and his son Ryan, NBA Assistant Director of Scouting, will once again serve as analysts.

The draft is “serpentine” or “snaked” which means the order will be reversed in each of the ten rounds. For example, after picking first, Colorado’s next selections will be the 28th and 29th overall. The Iowa Energy will select last in the first round, but first in the second round, giving them the 14th and 15th picks overall. "It's the best way to evenly distribute the talent in the draft," said Chris Alpert the D-League's Vice President of Basketball Operations and Player Personnel.

The order of the first round will be:

1) Colorado 14ers
2) Dakota Wizards
3) Albuquerque Thunderbirds
4) Idaho Stampede
5) Rio Grande Valley Vipers
6) Sioux Falls Skyforce
7) Fort Wayne Mad Ants
8) Los Angeles D-Fenders
9) Anaheim Arsenal
10) Utah Flash
11) Tulsa 66ers
12) Austin Toros
13) Bakersfield Jam
14) Iowa Energy

With so few players coming back to the D-League this season, I guess it doesn't matter too much, but having the D-League finalists pick 1 and 2 kind of sucks.

Is there a list of available players or do the Toros just draft anyone who they believe will become available?

Also, if the Toros draft Marcus Williams (assuming they are allowed to), would he be their property if the Spurs waive him and Williams wants to play in the NBDL?

Thanks.

Is there a list of available players or do the Toros just draft anyone who they believe will become available?Players declare themselves available by signing a contract with the D-League.

Also, if the Toros draft Marcus Williams (assuming they are allowed to), would he be their property if the Spurs waive him and Williams wants to play in the NBDL?In order for that to happen, Williams would have to be waived at the end of training camp, sign a contract with the D-League then get drafted by the Toros. In the meantime he could be picked off waivers by an NBA team, signed by an NBA team or drafted by a different D-League team. Neither the Spurs nor the Toros would have any special rights to him.

I still don't know what the situation is for unsigned draft picks. That is something the NBA and NBPA need to address.

I say cut williams and then draft him with the toros. What other team would have any interest in this guy the way he has been playing and then try and pick up someone like Nichols (NYK) or another decent young player. 2 for 1 in developing these players..

There's like ten rounds in the draft. Someone would take him.

He would probably be taken before #12 in this draft.

Probably those stinking Mad Ants or freakin Assinals..The names crack me up in this league

Mad Ants is easily the best name in the league. They can't really keep it if they have to move though.

I think Iowa Energy is probably the lamest of all the names..

Chump, is it very difficult to get a ticket to these games or are their seats a plenty??

It's easy. The convention center is usually half full. It might change a little now that the Spurs own them, but I doubt it. if you are in town, it's best to get tickets from Run-Tex or another GetTix outlet. You can pick your seat location there but not online.

Not this season. They had an 11:00 AM game last season that was overrun by schoolkids. Fortunately I had earplugs and courtside seats that game.
