The Chargers added another explosive playmaker to their offense just prior to Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline as they sent a 2008 second-round choice to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for wide receiver Chris Chambers.

“We are very excited to add Chris to our team,” General Manager A.J. Smith said. “He brings a wealth of experience and outstanding production. He is an extremely talented football player and we have held him in high regard throughout his career.”

Chambers is a seven-year veteran who has a history with Chargers Head Coach Norv Turner. In 2002 and 2003, Chambers’ second and third seasons in the NFL, Turner served as Miami’s offensive coordinator. The Wisconsin graduate caught 52 passes for 734 yards and three touchdowns in his first year with Turner. In 2003, Chambers had a breakout season while working with Turner. That year he caught 64 passes for 963 yards and 11 touchdowns.

“Chris is an explosive, talented player and I’m thrilled to have an opportunity to work with him again,” Turner said. “He’s a very consistent player and he has big-play ability. We think he can add to what we’re doing on offense.”

Chambers earned a trip to the Pro Bowl following a 2005 season in which he hauled in 82 passes for 1,118 yards and 11 touchdowns. In six games with the Dolphins this season, he’s caught 31 passes for 415 yards.

The Chargers believe the 5-11, 210 pound receiver can contribute immediately due to his knowledge of the team’s offense. In addition to working with Turner in the past, Chambers has spent the last six months working in Cam Cameron’s offense, the same system that Turner runs and the same one that is still in place from Cameron’s tenure as the Bolts’ offensive coordinator.

“The bonus for us is that he’s familiar with the system,” Turner said. “It should be a quick and easy adjustment for him. We expect him to come in and be productive right away.”

Chambers ranks fourth in Dolphins history in receptions (405), receiving yards (5,688) and touchdown receptions (43). He has 15 100-yard receiving games in his career. Consistency has been a strength of the fleet-footed pass catcher as he’s recorded at least 50 receptions in each of the last six seasons. In 2001, he led all rookies with 883 yards and his 48 receptions trailed only LaDainian Tomlinson (59) among first-year players.

Didn't realize he played under Norv for a few years. This could be a great help when being faced with 8 in the box every game. Chambers, Jackson, and Gates will be tough to contain.

I've always been a huge Chris Chambers fan. If Rivers continues to keep his head out of his ass and they can somehow win in spite of Norv, this pickup puts them right back into the Super Bowl picture.

I still say the Norv meltdown is on, but this team is looking great and might be able to overcome it.

When has Norv EVER had talent like this? I could coach this team to the playoffs considering how weak the AFC West appears to be this year.

It appears the Chargers are finally buying into Norv's system and it also seems Norv is buying into the fact that LT is the best running back in the league.

Well, this Chambers certainly looks consistent.
We get Chambers for a 2nd, Pats get Moss for a 4th. :cryFloyd and Jackson are pretty much identical, and neither one has done much this year. Floyd seems like he's had a lot of trouble getting separation this year though. And with this pickup, I think a lot of pressure will be taken off of Jackson. Jackson has talent, but I don't think he was ready for this big of a role this early.

the spectacualr catches he used to make are not going to happen(haven't seen those in 2 years)

Chris was a player that I kinda liked, but his inconsistency really ticked me off sometimes. All told, considering how much he was paid and how inconsistent he was, I'm not sad about this if we really got a 2nd round pick.

He became expendable the day Ginn was drafted, same type of receiver. At least they got a 2nd for him and didn't just get rid of him like McMike.

I consider a 2nd a steal when you consider the Patriots got Moss for a fourth. I didn't think Chambers would be worth more than a 5th based on that.

Now if we could unload Ricky to Tampa for a 3rd.

The only knock I've heard on Chambers is that he has a tendency to drop balls. Has this been his whole career or just lately with his crappy QB's? He made the pro bowl recently and that's more than I can say for the entire Chargers WR crew (minus Gates). I have a feeling he'll pan out just fine with the Chargers.

chambers is a one hit wonder (2005)

blame it on the crappy qb's, but he lead the nfl in drops last year
